I really want to buy a XB12X, but the dealer "setup" fee is a huge issue for me. Did you guys pay this? I have purchased other bikes and I don't remember ever being charged a setup fee. Is this a justified charge or am I just being too cheap? It seems to me a cost of doing business because a dealer is going to have a difficult time selling the bike if it's still in the crate. What does this "fee" include? What about the extended warranty? A necessity? Thanks. |

To freight a bike from East Troy to the republic of Kalafonia is about $450, so that would be added to the cost of the bike, the dealer charges about $125 to uncrate the bike and get it road ready, so an extra fee of $575 isn't out in line....why? Are they asking you to pay more? I had to pay a grand when I got mine. |

Daves posted a list of things they have to do to a bike before it leaves the shop to go to the showroom floor. It was quite a long list IIRC. Maybe he'll chime in here and repost it. |

Some dealers waive the setup fee. Mine did. Check another dealer to see if they will waive it. The extended warranty is not a necessity, but you sure would hate to need it and not have it, IMO. Best of luck finding your new Uly. |

you've always paid for setup -- it may not have appeared on any invoice, but, trust me, you were paying for it one way or t'other |

It's definitely a bargaining point. Try to get them to include it for free. |

The shipping for ALL BUELL DEALERS is 240.00 That is a true cost the factory charges on top of invoice to the dealer. Some dealers mark that up, I don't. I also, at this point do not charge anything for the setup of the bike. It should be about 3 hours worth of labor. My service dept does charge me(the sales dept) for this and it too is added into the cost of the bike. We are at 65.00 per hour so it is 195.00. That comes out of the profit margin since I don't charge the customer for it. Some dealers mark this way up also. They make it sound like they have to assemble the whole thing Beware of dealers like this. If the dealer is charging frt and setup it should be a total of about 435.00(my numbers) to about 500.00 max. Everything is a bargaining point as Blake says. Sometimes I do this and sometimes I do that, depending on what the customer wants/needs. Every deal is different. I always try to be fair. To the customer,my dealer and to me. That way, everyone wins! Everyone is happy. I did just pick up an extra ULY, bought out yet another dealer giving up on Buell. It is black, new, full warranty. Fly to WI and ride it home! Here's what my standard deal would look like. Bike 11,495 Frt 240 Setup N/C Total 11,735 On top of that, you would get 15% off all your acc,and gear for one year. If you buy the bags at time of purchase I'll throw in the installation(about 100.00 worth of labor) Whatcha think? Wanna come to the Homeland and get one? 1-866-757-1651 ask for Dave in the sales dept (Message edited by Daves on November 03, 2005) |

doesnt Buell pay you for setup? When i worked at a dealership if kawasaki said the would pay 1.5 hrs for set up that is what we charged them and that is what we the mechanic got paid. so when we charged the customer for setup that was pure profit. |

Thanks to all who have replied, I appreciate the input. Daves, I would buy a 12X from you in a heartbeat, but it's a long ride from WI to ID this time of year. It would be a great adventure! In my neck of the woods the dealers are charging anywhere from $500 to $695 for setup -- on top of the $240 freight charge. They don't seem willing to budge -- I guess they don't have to since ID has been Californicated. Someone WILL buy the bike regardless of the astronimical setup. It's a showstopper for me. The difficult part for me is that I want the bike so bad I can taste it. I guess I'll have to show some restraint for now. Thanks again. |

Isn't adventure what it's all about? For the 500.00-695.00 savings for me not charging a setup fee you could get an almost free road trip in the deal. From here to Idaho is 1785 miles, a nice 3 day ride. |

many many thanks Dave for figuring all that stuff out! ya know, sometimes i really really wish buell would setup a system that would empower the customer & dealer to 'custom' order bikes how we want them setup by factory professionals.. don't like getting stuck with stock items we don't want like wheels, tires, bodywork, exhaust, ecm, seat, shocks.. i'd be willing to wait for them to build it and maybe monitor progress via a special web site - it would be way cool and buell would be the first to do it as far as i know. buells have lots of interchangable components we could pick from - kinda like personalizing the bike and making it your 'own'. heck, i wish buell would embrace all the great aftermarket sponsor stuff out there and offer these as deliverable options too (engine enhancements, bodywork, electronics, suspension). rant over. thanks again dave - i'll will be in touch with you or the good people at liberty or battley come spring. cheers. |

THEY NEVER WAVE THAT FEE!!!! if they do say they waved it, they mean they waved it right into the cost price of the bike. Only way to avoid this is buy a pre-owned one....not from a dealer |

Explain Jeremyh. Okay, if Daves says he'll sell a bike for MSRP (11,495.00) + Freight ($240.00) -- that totals $11,735.00. Then he's going to knock off $500 for the program discount, the final price out his door is $11,235.00 (of course I'll have to pay the 5% tax when I get back to Idaho). Right? Where's the setup fee? This is a great deal, one that can't be matched in the Pacific Northwest so far. Especially by the stealership in Boise. |

Actually, Jeremyh.. I didn't pay set up or shipping for my XB9R. So they don't all force you to pay it. My deal worked out so well that I rolled out of the dealership for $20 over MSRP (including full factory "race kit" and a few other minor accessories added in). So go figure.. deals on new machines are out there.. |

Wait a minute. Dave's is doing a very good deal especially if you are in a close proximity. Now if you were to buy Dave's bike and ship it to Boise you would have +/- 800 in freight charges to get it here (I have sold a couple bikes on e-bay and the shipping expense was 600 staying in the western states, and to go to the great lakes area was over $800.00. As good of an Idea it seems to drive the bike to Idaho from Daves, there is a problem for another 4 to 5 months it is called weather. Now lets be practical, if you are looking for a ULY, that is the hot item in any Beull dealership. Hi Desert Harley/Beull in boise is doing what it needs to do to stay in business. What would you do with an item that you have one of and there isn't any others available for 60 to 90 days and their is a waiting list to purchase the bike. would you discount the price to someone or would you go to the next person on the list. If you are wanting a discount buy another model, or go spend 15K+ for the BMW R1200GS. The bike is an excellent value at the price. I purchased the XB12SS because I have dirt bikes, I have touring bikes, I wanted something to have extreme fun with on the Idaho roads. I also purchased the SS because I am a large man, 6'2" 260 without gear, and on the CBR's R1's, and the standard length Buell, I feel like I am a gorrilla sitting (or something) on a football. The dealerships are making deals on substantially any other bike, but that one, is the commodity. Rod |

I know in 2003 when I was getting my 04 XB12R the MSRP was $10,995 - and that's what I paid (well, I had to pay tax when I registered the bike in VT). No setup, no freight, no nothing. It was $10,995 out the door. Yea Meredith HD in NH! |

Cruisin', That's the deal I'm looking for, but unfortunately I think Rackman's right. Folks in this part of the country must be paying whatever the dealership wants for the Uly. I have found most of the salesmen very arrogant toward making any type of deal on the 12X. Maybe sales will cool off in a year or so when the bike isn't "the next big thing." |

With my Uly (just got it on Friday 11/4) the dealer was fantastic! They started at MSRP, $440 for shipping and set up, $1000 for the bags and and no labor for the install = $12,935 I would have paid more if I had too, I'm glad I got the deal I did. After spending the weekend on it, I would have paid alot more! This is one fantastic bike. I'm afraid that this will be "the next big thing" for awhile. |

Hey Daves, that is a great deal! Boixb12, why don't you see if Daves will hold it for you (with a down payment of course) until spring? Then you can fly-n-by and have a great trip while you get her broken in! Either way, good luck! |

They say you can't go wrong with Daves, but if you don't want to go to WI, you might call down to Salt Lake and get a quote - driving to Boise is very doable from Salt Lake. I think their prices were fair (not gouging), but certainly not as good as Daves. |
