What RPM are you setting the idle at? should be right at 1,000. How are you adjusting the idle? There's a adjustment knob to the rear of the steering head, on the left side behind the ram air duct. Kinda hard to find unless someone showed you where it is, or you have the manual. Make sure there is just a little slack in the throttle grip. if the cables are adjusted too tight it will make it difficult to adjust.

Has anyone with an XB really had the intake air leak problem? Or is that only on the older tubeframe models?

Best to run the bike STEADY at 3400 RPM's for 7 minutes, no uphills or downhills, steady load, for the ECM to adjust for lean or rich running conditions due to changes in altitude.

Rode the bike out to Stone Mountain H-D this morning and told them of my situation with the idle. No fewer than three people came out to look at and listen to the bike, and then the head technician took it back and reset the TPS. Still no difference in the revs, but I was astounded that he did so "gratis."

Chris in parts is a Buell specialist without peer. I bought some frame pucks, the traction hand grips and a few spare fasteners and he loaded them into a COMPLIMENTARY Buell messenger's backpack (quite nice) and even threw in a few logo caps.

Chris' honesty and breadth of knowledge about the brand was amazing. We decided upon a pipe setup for the bike (they're a Special Ops dealer) and I will be bringing the bike to them exclusively for the maintenance work I cannot do (TPS, etc.).

As to the idle, he listened and watched as well and suggested that I simply continue my break-in and if it doesn't go away with the race ECM, pipe, etc. -- THEN get concerned.

Good enough for me -- an exceptional dealer.

I had the same issue on my 03 firebolt. Of course I got all the replies you see here. Well it turned out to be the O2 sensor.

check your plugs, my bike was idling erratically and swapping my plugs out made all the difference in the world.

I had the same thing on my 2004 XB9R when it was stock. I'd blip the throttle and it would "hang" around 2000 and then after a few seconds drop down to normal. Very annoying.

I fitted a factory race kit and the problem is gone. The idle never "hangs" any longer and throttle response is much crisper as well.
My local Buell/Harley dealer workshop manager said that these bikes are designed to only really run properly with the race kit.

As it happens though, I was told the problem might have been caused when I messed with the idle speed. Apparently, if you change the idle speed you have to have the TPS reset.

So now, even though my bike idles a little lower than I'd like, I'm leaving the idle alone!

That manager should be fired cuz what he told you is TOTAL crap both about the race kit AND the idle adjustment.

Stone Mtn has a terrific staff.
Trying to t-shoot with a 200 mile screwdriver. Lot's of good ideas and all should be pursued to correct the problem. Has the throttle cables been adjusted? I'd not simply let it attempt to be repaired with a race ECM and muffler. That may simply mask the problem or the problem may be thee after dropping the dime for the upgrades. (Solid upgrades though!)

The TPS doesn't need to be reset after adjusting idle...that's simply bunk (aka crap). I'd be cautious about that dealership Ndj

Well I agree that this dealership is pretty crap. It's primarily a Harley shop and they don't seem very interested in Buells. I wish there was somewhere else I could go but they are the only Buell dealer in town. Having said that, the Race kit fixed the problem and the bike runs really sweet now (touch wood). ; )

Slow to drop to idle issue surfaced for several bikes a couple years ago, a few people, myself included, found the idle cable in a bind.
I traced mine back and rerouted it and that solved my problem. Had to take the air filter box off to see and get to everything.

When I get back I'm gonna pop the airbox off and dig deep into this problem. There's some great ideas here -- my money is on some sort of air intake leak.
