I have noticed on my back rest come luggage rack that you don't need to push in the pin with the key to allow this to be swung into one of the 3 positions, all you have to do is flip the plastic retaining ring and pull the seat towards you and then place into the required position. What is the idea of the pin, or has mine broke??? |

Tried that with mine, seems like yours is broken! Sorry! |

Mine does the same thing - I think the naive, over curious, sales folk broke it at the dealership while it was on the showroom floor. I thought about having it repaired under warranty, but then decided against it as I actually prefer not to have to use the key - really doesn't affect the function of it at all. I don't think of my as broken, rather just that it's special Cheers -Jack |

I just went out to the garage to check mine. It won't budge....sorry! That's one of the reasons that I passed on the first Ulysses that was delivered to the dealership. I was there while everyone was pawing the thing and using the "brute force method" to explore anything that looked innovative. |

First Uly I saw, no key was required. Second one I saw, you had to use the key. I'm thinking that the "brute force" method will break the clip that makes using the key necessary. |

I saw one that didn't require the key either. IMHO it had been abused (forced) as you guys suggest. Still worked perfectly. Mine requires the key. I just think many folks saw or heard how it works but didn't realize it needed a key. Geez, I had to stop a guy from "showing me" how it worked on my bike. He was a big lad, he grabbed it and said "I know how this works" and I had to say "hold on there partner!"... Not sure it really matters though. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |

Actually, while were on this topic, I have a related question: Is there a need/requirement for any type of lube on the gear side of the backrest/luggage rack? Good/bad idea? Cheers -Jack |

I'm curious about the internal working of the mechanism. I'm guessing the key release is there in case you have a load strapped on and the flipper lever de-flips somehow to help prevent the tail from accidently flipping more. Could be just a simple ball release, doesn't seem to care what you stick into it to release it though. |

Hi Jack, I would not lube that gear. You want it to lock solidly in place with no chance of slippage, eh? (I'm thinking if you're getting on the throttle and have a passenger in back leaning hard against the tail). I'll know more when the FSM arrives. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |

Jim, I guess I was think along the lines of some dry moly, to help reduce wear - but maybe it's a non-issue, or not appropriate given the material (aluminum?) Cheers -Jack |

The one I played with llok like it could be towed by the "swing-form". Of course, it did have Henrik sitting on it and if I'd have towed it I would have never heard the end of it. I would describe it as "robust beyond it's intended use". . . . er, the Buell, not Henrik. |

To tell you the truth, I played with the back rest when I first got it but now it pretty much stays in the sissy bar position. It's a great place to keep your helmet when gassing up and I don't have to move it when I want to take the seat off. |
