Hello Badwebs,
I have spent a lot of time lately lining out my City X. I finally ended up removing a Jardine and putting the factory race muffler on it. I also have a techlusion TFI on the bike. I noticed idle it smells very rich so I backed the first pot down. I have not tried it today, but it was pinging at take off last night. I know it is not lean because the fuel smell is awful. Can a rich situation cause pinging as well? Anyways, I turned the TFI down a bit. I have searched the archives for settings with those of you running race ecm and techlusion. Any upated settings. For the most part my bike is running goos now, but that pinging was happening last night when I barely gave it gas sitting still and taking off. I have the KN, Buell Race Pipe, TFI, Snorkel pulled.

The settings I would recommend for you bike would be to dis-connect the TFI. The Race ECM was made for your set up. The Buell tuners knew what they were doing.

Probably good advice, I have thought that myself. Might just do that.

The techlusion doesn't work well with the race kit ECM, so either remove one or the other. We achieved better hp figures using the stock ECM and TFi than we did with the race kit ECM, although the difference wasn't huge.

Take it off. I just went through that whole bit myself and I have a city cross. You will be much happier, trust me.

Took it off went for a ride and the damn thing runs perfect!! Good advice!! The race ecm was more than enough. Race kitted bike fully now.

thats an interesting question about ping and rich conditions though. i realize it makes no sense... but my 12 would ping like mad all summer (TFI on), even on cool nights/cold rainy days. but once i was running just the race ECM i've only heard it ping once. gotta be all the cooler fall weather though. my brain has gone crazy trying to figure this out. grasping at straws these days.

i'm very curious why your 9 pinged with the TFI on though. hmmm. I do remember that Jerseyguy found out the TFI + race ECM was overkill on a 9 but didn't experience pinging with the overly rich conditions.

The techlusion doesn't work well with the race kit ECM, so either remove one or the other.

Trojan, you're referring to a 9 only I assume?

Typeone, I believe Trojan is talking about both. The TFI is designed for use with the stock ecm's on both the 12 and 9...

I have experienced this pinging phenomena with my 12 and although it's worse on hot humid days, it will occur on cooler days too. I think, however; I have narrowed it down a bit. It only happens when the the fan is running, which means the engine is hot. I assume the internal temperature of the engine affects performance. Would a hot motor heating the intake air cause pinging?

prolly not, but doesn't a hot motor detonate more readily (as it preignites the mix before TDC)?!

being similar to lean conditions & doesn't richer mix retard ignition of the mix a little until TDC?!

Hey Badwebs,

Found something today while taking the TFI off that might shed some light on the earlier troubles with rough running with my other exhaust. There is a vacuum fitting or something sticking out on the throttle body tower that has a little rubber cap on it. That cap was ripped and seemed to be sucking air. I found a new piece at the hardware store and plugged it back off. The bike has ran perfect every since. I don't know what that thing is on the side there, but I sure am curious as to what problems that would have caused. The bike is doing great. Went on a ride this evening and she pulls really strong, but the best thing is that my off idle performance has improved a bunch. I can cruise at low speed without the issues I was having before. Take care everyone and thanks for the comments and insight.

Greg

that plug is cal. emissions cr@p

i also have been having a debate about the tfi and "race" kits at work

"I" believe the race ecm / downloads on h-d and buell products advance the timing

on the buell with the TFI that can be bad

on the hd(different injection systems) it probably will be BETTER

can someone verify this ??

plus on the h-d, if the TFI fails there will be something to fall back on (and yes i have seen both the TFI and POWER COMMANDER fail)

I did extensive on the road a/f ratio testing on my XB9s with the Race ECM, TFI, Drummer and K&N. I unequivocally proved to myself that the TFI combined with the race ECM is way too rich even at its lowest settings. If you go to www.kdfab.com and go to the TFI runs section you can see for yourself. The TFI was designed to work with the stock ECM as others have said above. I found that the best mods on my 9 were the Drummer, K&N, race ECM & cut airbox.

Jerseyguy,

Amen to that. Mine is totally resolved at this point of problems that I was having. I actually get to ride now. I will be selling the TFI to someone in need of it that has the stock ECM.
