With all the recent belt failures I decided to inspect mine.
First of all I noticed this on my pulley...

Then I felt the entire length of the belt and found this...

For reference I used a pencil which is sitting in the hole, gives one the idea of the depth.

Here is the same pencil next to the bugger that was sitting in my belt.
There was a bump on the other side of the belt (thats how I found it)
So my question is should I get my belt replaced?

sorry to see the damage, but what a great way to inspect the belt for damage, just look for damage on that rear pully...

Interex, the service manual says that a rock thru the belt,as long as it isn't on the edge does not need replaced,I have had a hole in the center of my belt for about 7000 miles now, with no problem.

Alrighty, just wouldn't want it to snap or loose a tooth or two while in the canyons.

I WOULDNT TAKE A CHANCE. IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD GO AHEAD AND REPLACE THE BELT. I HAD 2 BELTS BREAK ON 2 DIFFERENT BIKES IN 4 DAYS. IT CAN BE A REALLY BAD SITUATION DEPENDING ON THE WAY IT BREAKS. DONT TAKE ANY CHANCES.

B_666, did you mention that you ride your bikes harder than a recently parolled inmate at a brothel?

Damn those miniature indians and their evil scheme to take over the world with miniature arrow heads!
Any whom, the kind fellas at the dealership refused to put it down as a warranty item, and they told me that its nothing to worry about...
hmm
well I guess I will monitor the belt very carefully, and I made the area a lot easier to spot by putting some whiteout around the teeth.
Lets hope I don't die

WEll, your dealer needs to read up on the warranty paperwork/contract, as it CLEARLY states:

If the belt is broken or damaged with the factory or HD/Buell approved belt guards in place, replacement is authorized under the terms of this warranty.

SO, I would go back and raise some questions, as long as your belt guards are in place, but there is NO WAY I would ride on a damaged belt at all, reguardless of a dealer's opinion!!

Just my .02

Interex-Don't take a chance on something that can be taken care of for $150. If your belt breaks,at the very least you'll be stranded, and maybe worse. If that were my bike, that belt would be all I would be thinking about and it would take all the fun out of riding it.Peace of mind alone is worth the cost of a belt,no?

You should get a new sprocket too.
Service manual says any chipping on the chrome tooth finish requires replacement.

I will wait till my regular service guy comes back and I will talk to him (maybe he will be more reasonable).
The belt certainly did discourage me from going for a joy ride in the canyons this morning. I do hope that it will hold up daily commuting (about 20 miles per day) until I get this figured out.

The warranty is like a double edged blade, its great if something goes horribly wrong, but you can't do anything yourself (the only thing the dealership allows me to do is to change my oil). So if I dont succeed in making this a warranty repair it would cost me parts and $70/hr for labor, not to mention I will have to walk for a couple of days (or find a vehicle to borrow).

You can specify to the dealer that if is not a warranty repair to button it up and charge you diagnostics time(if applicable) and you will and can do the repair yourself. You do not have to have the dealer for crap if you keep all you recipts, A dealer cannot deny a warranty claim b-cause you did not have them do your maint.

I do all my own work unless I feel that it is a warranty item, example 24,000 miles on the bike and the only thing the dealer does is TPS resets, now I do buy all my maint. parts at the dealer so when a warranty issue comes up there is no question if the work had been done, they have records of all the parts I have bought. Recently my throw out bearing in the clutch basket went bad and the dealer fixed it under warranty, no questions because I bought all my tranny fluid from them.
