Henrik, I'd use tranny lube. No need for assembly lube or grease like when reassembling an engine that upon startup will not immediately have adequate flow of lubricant. Take pics! |

BAKER 6 SPEED, I am saving my money for a Baker 6-speed. Retail is $2,350.00, and so far the best price I have found is $2,100.00 Anybody heard of a better price and from whom? |

Schemky, I got the same price from my local watering hole too. $2100! I'm not sure what kinda ridin ya do but I just put on last week a BDL 28t front. All I can say was well worth the 1 bill! Comes with new nut, lock, seal, and spacer. Happy cruisin at 85+. Was seriously thinking six box but was having hard time with $2+large. I see no real loss down low. Still does awesome 1st gears and just a blipp of clutch for seconds! But hey if you got it spend it. Ya can't take it with ya right! By the way I still had enough adjustment with the stock belt. 27 tooth pulleys came on the S1s. Same belt. There would be lots of Sportster riders who would be happy to swap a 27 for a 29. (The 883s come with the 27s). Aaron has a chart of resultant speeds posted somewhere. |

Sporty, I used Aaron's chart. It was only about 4mph more at a givin rpm in 5th but it seems like alot more because it puts cruising in a sweet spot on my bike. Definately worth the money for the kind of riding I enjoy. |

Seeing the Baker 6 speed box posts has prompted me. A member of ours (he's in the Army, so could be in Kabul or Tora Bora for all I know and so he can't post regularly) recently bought a Baker 6 speed unit. Had it fitted by a very experienced Tech and what ever they did, they couldn't select more than 3 gears. Many expensive Trans Atlantic calls ended up with the unit being shipped back to Baker. It would be good to hear of any problems anyone experienced over there. I shall pass the answers on to our member next time he's somewhere around an internet PC. Thanks, the bike is a '98 S1. Seems like I saw a recall notice in one of the bike rags regarding an aftermarket 6-speed-was it Baker's or somebody else's? Are they all made by the same people, anyway? r-t |

6 - Spped, Thanks for the info. I would definitely consider changing out the front sprocket but don't want to give up my speedo accuracy. Is there a "black box" for harleys like they make for the imports, for speedo calibration?? If so, I would purchase the sprocket and the algorithmic based speedo compensator pending availability and go merrily down the road. During the winter of 01, I installed a set of Nallin Hurricane pistons, Andrews N4's, cleaned up the head ports, and jetted the carb to match. My M2 has a "sweet spot" between 3,000 to 4,200 rpm (62 to about 87 mph) and feels like it would cruise endlessly in this range. Torque is awesome on the road. But lowering the rpm (ala Baker 6 speed) would be icing on the cake. |

RT: that was Rev Tech's, for Big Twins. The Baker XL 6-speed is a good working gearbox. My neutral light doesn't work is all. It should, though, they have the pin sticking out of the drum. I need to look into it. |

Aaron, Thanks for the response. Since you have experienced the Baker, I have a question. I have a "thing" about excessive drive-line lash. My M2 has the most "fluid" drive-line of any bike I have ever ridden. There is NO lash or slack in the drive-line. Does the Baker exhibit the same characteristics as the sportster gear box in this regard? I recently purshased a used/like new Honda CBR1100XX. Bike was blindingly fast, however, the gearbox was clunky and the drive line lash was horrendous (normal for this model). I just sold it. This should give you an idea of my intolerance for excess lash. |

I certainly haven't noticed any excess lash. Honestly, it feels pretty much like the stock gearbox, shifts are a little easier (similar to the Baker smooth shift kit in a 5-speed box). You just have one more gear. |

6 - Speed, Thanks Aaron, I really appreciate your input. Incidentally, does your particular Buell pull 6th gear well, especially on uphill grades? |

Uh, yeah, the one with the 6-speed does, of course it has 110 ft/lbs of torque, it oughta! |

Schemk, The speedo is easy to correct just add 5mph to what it says and your safe. Also what year XX did you have? If it was a fuellie they had a tendancy to have quirky(very touchy) f.i. responsiveness. It sounds like ya got the jack for the 6er but if your not totally sure try the front pulley. Drag Specialty $100. |

Aaron, Please tell me you DO NOT have a stock bore and stroke!! Rippin, I have a carbureted 99 M2, and no, I do not have enough in the piggy back yet. I am about half way there. However, I want to get as much real information as I can before I take the 6 speed plunge. |

Don, the kit I bought for my 2000 M2 is part # 49074-01Y. I don't know if that will fit your S3. John |

Don, I just looked at the instruction sheet that came with the shifter kit and it says that this kit fits 2000 and earlier M2 and S3. For S3T you need a newer style fairing lower kit part # M1000.MAxx where xx denotes the color. Again the kit is part # 49074-01Y. John |

Thanks, John. I appreciate the help and info. It didn't even occur to me that there would be different shifters for different models. Duh! Any idea what the part # is for the X-1? I would like to add the numbers to the "Announcement" section on this topic Don |

Don, I found this part number on the Buell web site under controls in the assessory section. Shifter Kit for Buell 49074-01Y $99.95 49092-01Y $99.95 49074-01Y Fits all Buell M2 and S3 models without fairing lowers. 49092-01Y Fits all Buell X1 models. Stock on '01 X1 models. Upgrade your motorcycle with the new Shifter Kit. It adds comfort, convenience and reliability. This kit includes all necessary hardware. Eliminate the "wrap around" shift linkage of the past. The future is here! Prices are MSRP US$. All products may not be available in all markets |

I just installed a Baker smooth shift kit along with the newer 2nd gear ratio. I now have no neutral! Also I got a few neutrals when downshifting from 5th to 4th. I called Baker and they said it may be that the detent spring is to light (hell, they supplied the spring, duh!) or the pawl is out of adjustment. Anyone else experience this or have any ideas? |

Ivan, I put those same parts into mine, didn't have that problem. Did you follow the manual on the shift pawl adjustment with a .118 (.113? something like that, anyway)? I did have some false neutrals between 3&4, and 4&5, after putting the baker kit in. Either my shift technique adapted, or the problem went away as it "broke in". I think I should have used more assembly lube on the shift drums/forks when I assembled mine, I've been attributing the improvement primary lube finally getting everywhere it should. Aaron indicated that he didn't have that problem with his Baker kit. Al |

I'll tell you what, it's HARD to get one of these things lubed completely when you assemble it, you gotta really make an effort. If you think you can assemble it and then pour oil on it and it'll work properly, you're in for a big surprise (don't ask me how I know!). It may take 20-30 minutes of actual road time usage before it'll shift properly. |

I'm up and running for the season, with the new detente plate. Its so clickety click its distracting. Every shift I think "Hey. That's nice!" I never minded the old clumky shift, with little other experience to compare it to. I, myself, wouldn't make a special incursion that deep just for that. Fortunately, I had tranny surgery to preform that justified changing it out. |

Actually my son did the assembly and adjustment. He just graduated from the MMI Harley program so I'm confident he set it up correctly. I'm going to pull the primary cover this evening and do a visual inspection, will probably put the stock detent spring back in if I don't find any other problems. We put about 30 miles on after the install. The shift quality is much better than stock, I just can't find neutral where it's supposed to be :-) |

i just received my baker smooth shift kit. a couple of questions: How many parts should come with it? I received the shift drum and spring. Is the detent plate attached to the shift drum? and Can someone send me the instructions mine didn't come with any? Thanks |
