I run a 2000 M2... When I run high RPM for a time the motor starts ticking, sounds like a valve maybe. The thing is it goes away and I may not hear it for the rest of the day. The bike has done this since new....I have a Jagg cooler and run synthetic to help keep temperatures down. Any ideas what this might be???? Thanks.... |

Lifters bleeding down as the oil gets air (foam) in it. |

My 2000 M2 had an odd ticking noise that would only develop as it warmed up. It ticked pretty badly until it got to operating temperature. I thought it was a lifter or a clearance problem created by differing alloys but it was much simpler than that - it was my exhuast gaskets. I replaced them recently and the ticking disappeared. A leak at the headpipe will sound like a metallic tick. |

Thank you for the replies.... The sound comes when the bike gets warm rather than the other way with an exhaust leak, I do agree it is a similar sound for sure. I'm fairly sure Captainkirk is correct and it is the lifters. That seems to be the opinion of a few others I have spoken with recently..... Is there anything I should do about it, I can't imagine it is harmful to the motor in any way??? |

No....they're hydraulic and the pushrods and rockers are non- adjustable. Mine did the same thing. I fixed it by installing a Buell race exhaust...now I don't hear a thing! |

Yes. "I can't hear you LALLALALALA!!!!" I recently went on a short trip into town with the little bowl helmet and no gear. My bike sounded like it was going to explode. Full gear+real helmet=no explodey noises |

I like that solution, that's the real problem the V&H exhaust I have is not loud enough. Air cooled pushrod v-twins make all kinds of mechanical noise. I just wanted to make sure no damage was being done, sounds like this is really not an issue.....Thanks for the feedback.... |

I know when its time to replace my lifters.... When I can hear them rattling even over my D&D. Something about constantly runnign the snot outta it in the high rpm range, seems to taost these thigns.. gonna try higer ratio roller rockers , and roller lifters... Hopefully add a few ponies..and longer loasting between flog sessions..(which are daily) Chase |

Having just been through a horror story with the primary chain and a resulting transmission failure, take a minute and check your primary chain. |

Jason,you already have roller lifters stock.Can always upgrade to some Jim's or such.Roller rockers are nice and get some adjustable pushrods so you have the ability to adjust if you need to. Speaking of engine noise,I always ride with earplugs and the other night did a short hop without them. Good grief what a bunch of noises!!! Non stock cams,lifters,pushrods,roller cam bearing set-up, and who knows what else was adding to the cacophony,but it was scary.And the rattle at low speed off the dual disc set-up was amazing. |

Df, what kind of issue did you have with the primary drive? I keep a close eye on mine, just paranoid about it ever rubbing the inner primary case and all...I should get a self adjuster... |

NO! I heard from many places that self adjusters mess you up bad. The crude teflon shoe works fine. Don't mess with success. Loose is better than tight. |

Right...there's even a write-up on this (the Hayden M6) in the header paragraph of the Knowledge Vault; Primary Drive that warns about not using self adjusting primary shoes. The new ones work just fine (don't use the pre-2000 style; the spring WILL break) Jim, I know what you mean...I went for a short hop without the 'plugs the other night. Man, what a racket! (I must admit I like it, though. I just wish someone would stop ringing that bell!) |

OK, I shoudl edit that, but I will state it here... I meant to say aftermarket rollers... Sorry havent been to sleep in a while, and havent had more than 3-4 hoursa nite in about a weeka and a half or so;.. But, uh, yeah...anyway... And I dont boterh with earplugs, i am already damn near deaf....I like listening to my rattle box, I know when something isnt right, besides trusting to feel.... Mwellm, the primary was not tensioned properly, breaking the adjuster shoe which jammed the shifter. The chain slapping around caused the the rollers in the chain to disintegrate filling the primary with metal shavings. When the dealer replaced most of the pieces in the primary, they never took the extra 15 minutes to pull the transmission to check it. It lasted less than 100 miles until the output bearing failed. |

When I wear no earplugs I can hardly hear a thing. Earplugs seem to mute the exhaust and make every other noise that much more apparent. My bike has a lot of non stock internal parts and sure sounds aweful if you really listen. Rev it out and it's all good, though! Mine has a faint tick that starts when it's good and hot, too. It comes and goes randomly. I haven't been able to pin it down, either. |
