I found an item I want but have never used e-bay before. Any tips on how to buy stuff here would be most appreciated. What about paying and getting it delivered? |

Here's my .02 1. Make sure what you see is what you want. If not sure, ask for more pictures/info etc. 2. Pay with paypal using a credit card. Don't get "verified". It's just a gimmick to get access to your bank account(s). 3. Shipping depends on the item. Large items like motorcycles can be very costly. Pick them up yourself if feasible. If not, work out the terms with the seller before bidding. Small items are usually shipped UPS ground. I recommend getting the insurance. One last thing... Don't chase a bid up. Like buying stocks, decide your entry and exit points before entering the game. GOOD Luck! lib |

Glider, I'd have to agree with lib. I've bought and sold on e-bay without any problems. I ALWAYS make sure there is a picture or have one sent to me. In addition, try to get a picture of the actual product. Many people will paste a picture from a product's website. While their showing a picture, it doesn't show the condition of the item. As lib said, don't chase a bid. Most times you'll find a comparable item at a later time. I've seen people pay 2x retail because they didn't know better. RESEARCH the item you're buying (retail, blue book, other recently sold items, etc) Good luck & good bidding. |

I must fess up to not knowing what paypal is. If I place a max bid and someone outbids me, can I up my bid or place a new one? The item I want is a rainsuit that goes for $156 new and has a starting bid of $25. I was going to buy this regardless, I just happened upon it on e-bay by complete accident. Has little use, looks to be in good condition. I've e-mailed the seller a couple times and had my questions on condition answered. I was thinking of a proxy bid to max at $75 but if i can get it at $27... |

If you make a proxy bid for $75 while the current bid is $27 your bid will be placed at $28. You would be the high bidder unless the current high bidder has a proxie bid higher than $28. In that case, the bid goes back and forth until one of you gets out bid. If the other guys proxie bid is $74 you would be the new high bidder at $75, and if his proxie bid is higher than $75 he will still be the high bidder and the bid will be listed at $76. |

I never bid on anything I want until the last 5 minutes or so of an auction. There is no sense running up the bid untill you have to. Always make your cut off otherwise you can just keep going. As in your rain suits, they have been liquidating them for almost two months now. So eventualy you'll get a good deal. I figure what list is on a item and multiply it by .06 or 40% that should be what you can pick it up for. Any more than that and I shy away. I have been bitten from a e-bayer or two. It will happen just make sure you get all your questions answered before you bid! In short do your homework first. You can click on hte number beside their user name and see all there feed back to see what kind of dealer they are. As far as buying I use my VISA and Paypal, that gives some protection to where you can do a charge back if thing aren't like they said. Just a little peice of mind. Good luck and watch for those shipping prices and fine print! SG |

I agree, figure your max bid and enter it with like 10 seconds to go, this will keep you from getting auction fever and reupping your bid. Use an odd amount, like if you figure your limit at $75, bid $75.01. That will net you the win if someone else bids a round $75.00. I think. |
