Or ask your local dealer if they have any of the bubbled-decal tanks gathering dust in their attic or someplace. |

Scotty, That doesn't look too bad. Any good bodyshop could fill those scratches in and repaint it. |

Cool, when I get the bars, shifter, turn signal, and some of my rash heals (left the leather at home that day) I will take it to a shop. |

does the Firebolt have the same molded in color as the Blast? If so., how does it hold up and how do you polish out small scartches and scuff marks. I am wondering if I need a tank bra to keep my jacket off of it or I should I just buff it when it gets scuffed looking? Dave |

Dave, I bought the Aluminum tank protector from Buell. It looks great and was only about $35.00. I have a bunch of fine scratches and am also wanting to polish them out, but I'm afraid to screw up the finish. Bobby |

Regarding the '99 Blue Race stripe: In '99 there were two limited edition models: The race stripe and the Carbon/Kevlar Extreme. For the US market, they made 400 race stripes and 250 Extremes. The race stripe is Blue Streak (a color that was not otherwise available on an X1 in '99) and there was not a special gas cap on the '99 race stripe like the extreme or the '00 race strip and millenium models. This is all from memory. They were introduced at the end of the '99 season to boost sales before the 2000 models, so there are some differences between the early '99's and the limited edition '99's. I spent some time looking at an early '99 as compared to my '99 and found the horn was mounted differently. As another side note, the limited editions were made before the recalls, so all recalls apply to them. Damn, I feel a little like a historian. Vik |

From my archives: New Limited Production Buell® Lightning® X1 Motorcycles: Carbon Fiber Extreme and Racing Stripe Milwaukee, WI (March 15, 1999) -- Buell Motorcycle Co. announces the production of two new, innovative and eye-catching Buell Lightning X1 options, the Carbon Fiber Extreme X1 and the Racing Stripe X1. Both are limited production models that will be available in Buell dealerships this spring. In addition, the Nuclear Blue frame will now be an option on all other Lightning X1 models. The Lightning X1 was introduced last year as the successor to the S1 Lightning. Many journalists and enthusiasts have given the new model rave reviews for its striking, aggressive styling, advanced DDFI fuel injection system and improved rider comfort, among other features. It already stands out in the crowd, but for those who want an even more unique motorcycle, two new options have been created. The first is the Carbon Fiber Extreme X1, which features carbon fiber weaved with a blue-tinted Dupont Kevlar® brand fiber on the front fairing, chin spoiler, tank cover and windscreen. A Buell Pegasus icon is "emblazoned" into the windscreen. It comes with a Nuclear Blue frame, Nuclear Blue wheels, billet aluminum foot pegs, and a numbered gas cap. Only 250 Carbon Fiber Extreme Lightning X1 motorcycles will be produced for the North American market, available in May, with MSRP of $11,299 (US dollars). A special edition Carbon Fiber Extreme X1 is also being produced for the Japanese market. The Japanese version features the same combination of carbon fiber and Dupont Kevlar® brand fiber on the front fairing, chin spoiler, tank cover, windscreen, and also the rear inner fender. This model comes with a white frame and wheels, billet aluminum foot pegs and numbered gas cap. Only 100 will be produced. No other manufacturer has offered a production motorcycle with a complete carbon fiber package. Buell Motorcycle Co. teamed up with its expert composite supplier and Dupont® to create the bodywork of carbon fiber and Kevlar® brand fiber. It features an alternating weave of the two materials, with a blue tint wind adds an iridescent gleam. Currently, many specialty automobiles, such as Formula One and Indy racecars, use Kevlar® brand fiber in their carbon fiber bodywork. The strong, lightweight material can also be found in ski poles and tennis rackets, but this is the first time it has been offered on a production motorcycle. The new Racing Stripe X1 is sure to stop traffic with its sporty design; one large white stripe running parallel to a small white stripe down the center of the Blue Streak painted bodywork. It was very well received by Buell dealers at the Winter Dealer Meeting in January. This limited production model comes with a black frame, black wheels (PM wheels optional) and billet aluminum foot pegs. The Racing Stripe X1 production will be limited to 400 units in the U.S. and 350 units in Europe and will be available in May with an MSRP of $10,899 (US dollars). Buell dealerships will receive a small number of each of these special Lightning X1 models. Interested buyers should contact their local Buell dealer for availability. Dealers can be located on this site. A third new option for the Lightning X1 is now being offered in the U.S. and Europe due to customer demand: The eye-popping Nuclear Blue frame and wheels are available with any of the current X1 bodywork colors; Reactor Yellow, Carbon Black, Onyx Alloy, or Red Snap. Lightning X1 models with this new frame color will be available in dealerships this spring. As a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson Inc., the Buell Motorcycle Company produces motorcycles for the sport/performance and sport-touring markets. Buell motorcycle sales, marketing, communications and distribution are handled at Harley-Davidson's worldwide headquarters in Milwaukee, WI. Its engineering and manufacturing facilities are located in East Troy, WI, which is 35 miles southwest of Milwaukee. Vik |

FYI, on Edmunds.com I heard that "Simple Green" can damage aluminum. The Simple Greem website FAQs seem to confirm this possibility. Does anyone use it to clean their Buell? I have used it to clean other bikes, but I haven't used it on my Buell yet. Don't think I will. |

Psychobueller: I'm not sure about Simple Green, but whatever you do don't ever be tempted to use Castrol Super Clean on your motorcycle. It'll actually etch the aluminum. Russ |

Ara, Psychobueller, Simple Green WILL mess up your aluminum. I had polished my RB covers on my M2. I failed to get all the SG off during a wash. I would up re polishing the rocker covers. It looked like oxidized aluminum. I'll bet if left on long enough and full strength it would etch also. Brad |

Dave, I use Windex and a soft cloth to keep my Blast clean - shines up nice. The color goes all the way through, so I've just been buffing out any small scratches when I clean it. |

Do you just buff with the same cloth you are cleaning with? |

Dave, I have had good results with S-100 on my Blast. For the most part it's spray on, let it soak, and hose it off. If you do have to wipe a bit at those stubborn little stuck on bugs, use a very soft cloth or your finger. I usally take it for a ride to let it air/drip dry. Wipe off any water spots when done. From what I can tell there is a top film/coating on the bodywork. I have worn it away where the seat(Corbin) has rubbed on the tank from vibrating. Either that or it is just deeper scratches than I have seen before and there is no film like coating. It is in a inconspicous place so it doesn't bother me at all. The color does go through all the way. I made a whoops with the Dremel while trimming some holes in the licence plate mounting plastic to mount a M2 saddle bag. You have to look very close to see it while looking over the bike. If you go to Hal's on Saturday for the Battle Trax, stop by the Brew City Concession stand and I can show you. Jerry |

Dave, Minor surface sworls/scratches seem to buff right out with the cloth I use to Windex it and a little elbow greae. Really low maintenance finish. I wouldn't want to take a buffing wheel to it unless it was a deep scratch, 'cause I'm concerned the material would heat up and possibly melt, considering my heavy-handed power tool technique. |

Don't tell me HD/Buell don't yet sell a special cleaner/wax just for the plastice parts! Man, their parts and accessories marketing fols must be sleeping on the job. Actually, I'm kinda serious. It seems like a mild scratch remover/polish specifically make for plastic surfaces would work very well. Like the stuff my dad uses on his GoldThing's windshield. It's called "Novus 1 Plastic Clean and Shine". Comes in a Blue bottle with a pump spray cap. Most moto dealerships that I've visited carry it. Novus also makes a "Novus 2 Fine Scratch Remover" in a red bottle, and there's "Novus 3 Heavy Scratch Remover" in a green bottle. All are for plastic body parts as well as windshields and such. Don't use the scratch remover on scratch resistant treated faceshields though. For routine touch up and waxing I've not foud anything easier or better than S100 Detail and Wax. I love that stuff! The owners wife at Lone Star HD/Buell/Triumph turned me on to it back in '98 after she put an amazing shine to my Carbon Black M2. And if you can get a woman to buff your Buell for you while you watch, well that is just a bonus that adds to the whole big twin experience. Blake (shiny paint... good, shiny aluminum... a real PITA!) PS: I've also not found anything to beat an old T-shirt for buffing my Buell to a deep lusterous shine. |

Blake, actually they do call out a product in the Owner's manual. I'm just being cheap. While I won't mind paying out extra 100 bucks to get the right tires an extra5 bucks for polish gets me going. |

Last week i received my RRC M2 to S1 style c.fiber tailsection from Germany. It was really worth the wait, very high quality, judging by the finish+overall looks of the thing. As i +Bull mentioned earlier, you do have to cut the rear loop off the frame(havent done it yet because my bikes still sitting in the living room with its top end off waiting on back-ordered pistons+even I draw the line at hacksawing metal in the house). The cost ended up being about $510 plus $38 shipping(not including 1 of Buells classic skinny seats) |

Anyone know where I can get the racing style fairing for an X1? I've been looking around and the only one I find is for the S1. The bubble for the tach / speedo is on the wrong side for an X1. |

Wow Blake, besides the people who post, there must be a Huge group of Buellers out there that come to this site,i just got this e:mail from Germany. Hi,sorry i am unable to post in your forum,so i give you the text as an e;mail, maybe it's interesting to other Buellers? Ralph, the maker of the X1 parts is a friend of mine, you find more detail at his page:www.industrieblech.de He's coming now with a casted aluminum tail in the smaller S1 style, like you see in the photos. The aircleaner system is a prototype for the moment. He also produces belt protectors. Good to see that the US Beullers sneek over to our Borg Pages- Take care, Jens(driver of the red 92 RSS-on the photos) |

If i had an X1,id really be interested in that small tail section + seat + maybe somehow adapt an S3 gas tank,i think some X1 frames even have the little 1/4 in.steel bar already welded on that holds down the front of the tanks. There's a couple drawings of something like this on the cover of a 1999 B2W magazine. |

Looking for any one that has installed the CF under set panel for the M2 made by ABS. This thing looks really sweet. I have a M2L with a Buell X1 CF huger and was wondering about any problems with my huger contacting the panel when the suspension is compressed. The X1 huger is about 1 inch off the tire. Would remove the huger but just purchased it and do like it. |
