First time having the Buell on the track. I only have to wire the Oil filter, Oil drain plug, and dip stick. The Oil drain plug on the swing arm seems to be odd to wire. I've tried to get a bud with WERA over and he's been unable. I'm not trying to get it to pass WERA tech inspection yet. IF anyone races with WERA or any other race body that requires full safety wiring and has time to post some pics it would be very helpful. THANKS |

Hmmm... My guess is that it could be wired to one of the oil lines that aren't too far from it... It's been a while since I looked under mine though, so maybe I'm way off. |

Yes, I see I misspelled SAFETY. I tried to fix but was unable. Sh--! I hate when that happens. |

Oil filter - Stainless steel clamp from Home Depot or some other such source, then tie it off from there. Dip stick!? Sorry, no XB experience. On the tuber's its held on by the seat, and has no threads. If you're planning on racing WERA, then buy LOTS of 1/16" drill bits. You can get them in bulk from MSC Industrial Supply or McMaster Carr, both of which allow private accounts. Unless you are a god with a drill, you'll break lots of bits. Be especially careful when the bit is just about to break through the other side of the bolt. When one cutting edge of the bit breaks the surface, and you're still pushing, then the little bastard will break. Careful out there! Also, last I checked, WERA classes weren't Buell-friendly. I'd reccomend CCS. I also wired front & back axle hardware, and brake caliper mounts. I've seen people lose their axle nuts at trackdays... Looked at your profile, you're probably fine at the track. I still haven't gotten my knee down like that after two years of trying! Also, you wouldn't happen to be a rock climber, would you? |

Shred, I'm wiring my XB9S for CMRA track days and maybe a little racing. I wired the oil dip stick to the bolt that holds the rear brake line clamp in the swing arm. The oil drain plug I wired to a nearby oil line fitting, and the primary drain to the closest primary cover bolt. I've also wired the front axle pinch bolts and front and rear caliper bolts. I agree with Benm2, get lots of drill bits! If I can help, let me know and I will send some pictures. Keith |

Skully-Benm2, Thanks for the info, we're on the same page. I had looked at the oil line but didn't touch it yet. The dip stick and primary were o.k and yes I've already been through all the drill bits I have. Benm2, Your right about WERA, I've talked to the owners and they said if we had more Buell racers they 'MIGHT' try another class for our bikes. Right now Its the 'Heavy twin class' I have a few misfit friends that are on the SV1000's and most of the guys in that class are really cool. Some of them tell me to give the Buell up and I'd be much faster. I'm not having it. I have signed up for some classes to help me break some bad habits. The Keith Code at Barber in early sept. and EDbargy in middle of sept. as birthday present. I very lucky that my better half loves the sport and wants me happy. We're haven a baby in mid to late oct. so it will stop for a bit. Shes even said that in late nov. as long as I take care of things at the house, go have fun. I'm a lucky man! Benm2, I use to be a rock jock but gave it up. My 9 yr old daughter loves it. Nothing to high just little stuff and some repelling. Hey guys, gotta go for a little loop in the mountains. I should have already been gone. The squids come out around lunch. If you have access to a good detail map look at Hwy 60 by Suches,GA and Hwy180 off of 60. Thanks for you info and time. |

safety is not just for the track, there are many other instances in every-day riding where hot oil on the rear tire is detrimental. |

Fullpower, Good pics' Did you drill through the oil line "nut" ? I agree about the every day riding. Alot of riders don't do a complete safety check on all bolts and moving and non-moving parts. Cars and trucks are most likely to be the cause of oil spills and anti-freeze on the road. Just last week I was behind a Honda civic and could smell anti-freeze, this kid looked like he'd seen the 'FAST AND THE FURIOUS" one to many times and was dumping out anti-freeze everywhere. |

dunno, I want to trade my Z1000 for a buell on the street, but I'm building a 500ex to race next year, so much cheaper to keep rubber on it (Message edited by wedge on August 14, 2005) |

EX500 is a fun bike for the track. I have a couple buds that have had one. One guy brings it out to the mountains and really spanks some of the guys with the "Big Four" He sets it up bigger sprocket and all kinds of mods. Its funny, he doesn't even put the side stand back on. He just leans it up against a telephone pole if ftont of T.W.O resort " motorcycle hang-out" in Suches, Ga. Good luck with the bike. |

thanks, I'm going to deals gap in a few weeks, but won't have the EX running by then, it needs a lot of work still. And yeah, looking forward to trashing a lighter bike on the track. |

If you can go on a week day let me know. Friday or monday, just post when you get a date set. I haven't been this year. The weekends are a bit crowded with bikes and car clubs. The local police have no tolerance rule. Tickets or jail. If you get a wild hair, Suches,Ga. upper Hwy60 and 180 ar so sweet. You would not be disapointed. |

If anyone has more pics, I'd like to see them. Pinch bolts for axles. Axles and brake calipers, etc. |

How do you go about drilling the holes for the safety wire? Can I use a cordless drill or should I have a drill press? Is it hard to get though a bolt? |

Yes, you can use a cordless. If you've got a spare battery, keep it in the charger, you'll go through it quickly. I used my cordless because it had a better chuck (very important with little bits) and no cord to get in the way. Some of the bolts are hardened, so they're tough to get through. Some are hard on the outside, with a softer middle. Get a good centerpunch, and keep it sharp. Even if you're not drilling perpendicular to the face you're drilling through, always start that way. Rotate the drill so the bit's heading the direction you want after it gets in a little (like 1/64", just after it won't jump out of the centermark). WERA used to have their rulebook on their website, and at the end of the rules section were some decent diagrams for wiring patterns. If you don't have them already, safety wire pliers are a big help. I'll try to get some pictures of mine, sloppy as it is. Ben |
