Hey guys,

I took off with the kickstand down accidentaly....went to take a left corner and bounced the stand off the ground pretty hard. Seems to be fine, no bends. I noticed however that the stand mounts right into the motor casting....anything else I should be inspecting after this? Is it possible for the stand to crack the block when it was hit against the road, or would the kickstand snap before that happens?

Jack

I thought there was a sidestand cutof switch just to prevent that sort of thing. A buddy of mine in High School had a very bad accident doing just that.

I know the 2005 models don't have a side stand kill switch...

'04 and newer do not.

I thought the side stand kill switch is a federal safety standard. I can have the stand down in gear with clutch on but as soon as I let off the clutch it kills the engine, 03' XB9R.

No, it is not a requirement to have a switch. You can do this or you can design such that the stand retract as soon as it hits the ground if left down. This second choice is the most common method used. So although you feel a bump from the contact, it is automatically retracted. It's designed to work this way. Therefore it is extremely unlikely there was any damage.

seems to me the kill switch is the smart way to go.
why would 03 have it, but not the newer models. Odd.

One less thing to go wrong?

In reality all you need is fuel air and spark, why a kickstand switch? It should be habit, you get on the bike, stand it up, put the key in, and you retract the stand. Practice if you have to. Mine's second nature, unconscious movement, don't even think about it anymore.

Well, I know mine is bypassed....

The vibration an all...you hit a good sized bump, the stand moves...and statrs to kill the motor..untill it comes back up..makes for some interesting riding on bad roads....

I think a maojority of us tuber owners have bypassed our sidestand switch

Redesigning the kick stand so the switch wasn't needed was a feature of the 04 bikes.

How about the other extreme, the Guzzi 750 Nevada cannot be started unless the kick stand is retracted. Unbelievable but true. How would one set the idle speed or synchro the carbs, and how about having to actually sit on the bike with stand retracted while the engine warms up? I see that as close to stupidity : )

"I think a majority of us tuber owners have bypassed our sidestand switch".

I never thought about it, but that was the very first mod I made to my bike. I even went to the trouble to remove the bracket for the switch. My M2 is the only motorcycle I've ever had that used a kickstand switch.

I remember having to learn that my S2 will start in gear with the clutch out...only did it once.

Still have the switch on my tuber (knock on wood) but it also has the little rubber widget on the end of the kickstand that should kick up the kickstand if you ride off with it down.

"Suspenders and a belt" engineering?
