Hi all....I just noticed that the front strap holding the pro series exhaust on has snapped. My local shop doesn't have them in stock so a lengthy wait probably coming up. I tried to make a temp repair using other metal clips but couldn't get the right size. I am due to go out on a ride tomorrow, probably in the region of 200 miles so I would value your opinions on whether I should put the bike away until I get the replacement strap or should I risk still using it and rely on the rear straps and exhaust to header clamp, to hold without any adverse stress being placed elsewhere? | ||

i got one lying around ( a used one ) (i'm in holland ) ping me if you want it, it's yours for p/p cost and i'm with dave on the no riding before you fix it right. ask an other badwebber about his flip over when his exhaust decided to dig in the asphalt | ||

Don't ride it that way. A friend of mine here in AZ (he's a member of the BadWeb too) pole vaulted himself over the bars a couple months ago because the front of his exhaust came loose (it was not a Buell exhaust). It'll be a couple more months before he can ride... | ||

Andy, any HD dealer in the UK will mail it to you with a credit card purchase via phone call. A dealer should also be able to tell you which dealers have it in stock if any. I'd call Black Bear, Chesterfield and Warrs probably in that order. Rocket | ||

I've been told that once you remove the band to discard it because it will weaken if you retighten it again. It makes sense to me but I'd like to know from folks that know more than I if this is true or an old wives' tale. | ||

Well if its an old wives tale, then you need to let BMC know because it says NOT to reuse them in the service manual. As I was told, once torqued, the metal takes on a "set" when that is loosened, then retightened, the metal takes on a new "set" that leaves the stresses of the old "set" as a weak point. It has also been noted, that quite a number of the broken front straps, are on bikes in which the front strap was reused. Non-stock exhaust came loose at the front, it bounced the back of the bike up and then into a non-saveable tankslapper. What you can't see is of course not there, the missing section of bone that is taking its damn sweet time healing back in after a graft. | ||

Thanks Wycked, I've always used new clamps on the Sporty & I plan to use new bands on the XB if I end up getting a pipe for it. Don't go rushing that elbow. Give it as much time to heal 100% as it needs. | ||

The torque settings for the bands listed in the manual I feel are ridiculously high, there is a huge torque multiplication happening due to the fastening arrangement, I have stated this many times. Perhaps a Mechanical Engineer in our midst could do some quick calcs for us? | ||

i have never torgue theme down as high as the manual says, 2 kinds off metal getting very hot ( burning off wrinkle piant ) and i had my exhaust off more than a fuw time's i thighten the straps, so the exhaust is fixxed without moving | ||

I agree with Bud. I never tighten straps to a torque setting. Just use commen sense and feel. Norrie. | ||

One of my rear straps snapped yesterday while I was riding. It was 100 yesterday so I guess it the muffler just got too hot or something. Glad there are two one the rear. |
