Just a thought, Welcome to be shotdown if tried before, or no one cares.. but I'd be glad to register and setup a channel on dalnet's irc network (Irc = Internet Relay Chat, for those who don't know it's been around longer than the internet as we know it) The only reason I ask, is I've been on several forums, and they've all had a chatroom/service available for members to have real-time conversation with other members. It's completely free to use, and there are numerous clients out there. (mIRC, Xchat, freeIRC, etc..) I could setup a thread on how to setup mIRC to join the correct server and join the channel. Would be willing to work with the moderators here to teach them how to use the control features on IRC. Again, just a suggestion, welcome to be shot down, cut up, thrown in black trash bags and buried in multiple states---ermmm I've said too much *grin* - Ryan |

I'd be in. Would save a lot of time if you had a quick question and could get an immediate answer. All in all I think it's a great idea |

Good idea but - Who's gonna do the maintenance, setup and related work? |

I'd be glad to set it up, theres no maintainence, (and I'm available on irc at any given time, unless I'm at work) Matter of fact, Channels already been registered and setup. Just waiting for joiners well, I'll jump the gun for those interested. Some setup instructions... (a bit convoluted but you only have to do it once) 1. Go to www.mIRC.com and download mirc616.exe 2. install it 3. Launch mIRC 4. Once Irc opens, click the icon under the word "view" on the toolbar that looks like a Folder with a hammer. 5. It will open an options dialog box. Highlight "connect" and you'll see Fullname, Email, Nickname, Alternative Fill these in, and as a suggestion, don't use real items for name/email. But put in the Nickname you wish, pretty much the one you use here will be fine. Click ok. 6. you should now have a blinking cursor type this: /server rumble.fl.us.dal.net and hit enter, you should see connecting to rumble.fl.us.dal.net port (XXXX) once connected you'll see: checking hostname, ident etc.. When the text stops scrolling type /join #badweatherbikers And there you should find me (FrAuStY) and perhaps my bot (Whirred) once you get on I can walk you through making mIRC autojoin the channel and help tweak the connection. If you need any help, shoot me a message on here I'll be glad to answer back (work permitting) |

Alright, two successful people joined and were able to follow the setup instructions I've given.. Again this is simply for real time communication, in no way should this detract from the wealth of knowledge found here. If you have a question that perhaps other riders could benefit from PLEASE post it on THIS forum. I'd hate to see a decline in great posts due to this and if it becomes a noticeable problem please admins, let me know and I'll drop registration of the room. As a forum community the use of this forum should be held in high regards for what it is.. a knowledge base from numerous different inputs. We should remember to keep it as such and only use the chatroom for off topic, or quick questions.. Thanks and I'll see you here or on IRC. -Ryan |

I don't mean to throw water on your fire but IRC has developed a very bad reputation in the corporate world. Most major corporations that have an IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) block all IRC activity due to trojan activity. There have been at least 6 trojan's and varients (I personally found 4 of them, unknown to the major AV folks) recently that used IRC to phone home to a zombie after scanning their home network. They get updated information from the zombie via IRC on where to FTP the newly acquired scan information. So, what does this have to do with a Buell IRC chat? There may be issues with doing it from work. If the IPS system doesn't block it, corporate security policy may prohibit it's use. Just figured everyone might want to know... Brad |

Hmm, could always go with another chat program if needed. I use GAIM myself so I'm open to any IM program for chatting. |

Was just a thought, and most people now should have some type of firewall and Antivirus program. I've been on irc over 4 years, never once had an issue. But I myself should have mentioned vulnerability. The only other option would be a private IRC server, which if I had the box, and the time could set it up (thought about it a while ago just for friends) Leaving it up to you guys, if it doesn't work out.. it's a drop /cs drop #badweatherbikers =) |

I don't want to sound like a dunce about technical issues because I'm not but what are the differences between IRC and IM? I mean what are the advantages/disadvantages regarding security, setup, ease of use, etc. for them? Actually I am somewhat of a dunce regarding these technologies because I don't use them much. I have never used IRC and only use IM a little bit. I like the non linear aspect of email and bulletin boards. I can send an email or post a message on a bulletin board at anytime and I can read others emails or posts at anytime. Call me old-fashioned but real-time electronic communication for me is a telephone and up until recently that didn't even mean a cell phone! |

IRC is a chat relay network, using multiple servers to host thousands/tens of thousands of clients. Whereas MSN/yahoo/aim use a few servers that everyone connects to. On irc, if one server drops connection, other servers' clients can still chat away, until the connection is back up and all the people on the server that went down are right back where they were. (They even chat when connection to the network is lost) meaning, it doesn't boot you off like MSN does when it's chat server goes down. |

Gee, I sure wish you had check with me or another custodian before embarking on promotion of a chat page. Please don't use BadWeB to throw traffic to a chat room. BadWeB benefits significantly from the exchange of ideas and discussions of problems and performance work etc. and the long lived records of such dialogue. Please, no chat room. This place is sponsor supported and I see your idea as taking traffic away from the site to the detriment of not only the site itslef but also its sponsors, the folks who pay to keep it up and running. Frankly I won't use a chat application anyway. Too much trouble, too much risk. Start a darn chat page here and hit the refresh button once a minute. That's pretty much what the General Discussion Board is for. Thanks for understanding. |

I'd stayed clear of this because the chatroom idea has been tossed out, tried and nosedived so many times. The are generally self extinguishing and, as Blake said, this board evolves faster than I can type. Court |

BUT, there is no reason you cant go out and create your own chat room for Buell enthusiasts and tell the whole world about it. Only thing you can do is try it and see if it works. Just don't use BadWeb as an advertising source. |

Bob Edit: How about he change the name to #NOTBadweatherbikers? That'd be real clear, wouldn't it? (Message edited by nedwreck on August 02, 2005) |

Ok first off Blake, there was no intention of pulling people from this site, as you can see I even mentioned to the users that would have used the chat to continue adding valuable knowledge and information. As a few have mentioned, I could have gone and adverted my own page in my "Home page url" , my own chat for Buell enthusiasts around the globe, I was just offering something you didn't have and SINCE the thread Forum of "Ideas for a Better Badweb" is locked, I could only come here. I am not a stranger to the BBS/Forum community, I know what they are worth, but I also know that real-time chat with forum'ers helps to create a stronger bond between them. For those who can't RIDE together with other members, they could at least converse without being a refresh-monkey (yes I said it..) *click refresh.. "no reply".. *click refresh.. hmm still "no reply".. *click*click*click* Again, never was any harm meant to this site, I've found it as a great resource as have most. But some of us just aren't satisfied with the post a "general message" and wait 4 mins for a response.. it's like sending sms through a cup and string. If anyone still cares to join feel free.. you can still find me in my own personal channel on Dalnet #frausty drop in for a chat. But I can smell a pissing contest about the use of #Badweatherbikers, so to avoid more possibility it's been killed. |

I guess the shooting it down thing didn't work. Let's try another course of action then... A curse upon anyone starting a chat room here! A jihad on anyone starting a chat room here! Leaky rockerbox gaskets to anyone starting a chat room here! A broken drive belt to anyone starting a chat room here. Many deep penetrating menstrual pains to Ned too. Have fun with the chat room. Let me know if it works out. Might work on the sense of humor thing. |
