another dumb question...the shift linkage upgrade kit, it does fit C'lones as well as Lightnin's? no more lugging! will check low speed and get to hi asap... can you jack the thing from somewhere to get the rear wheel up? I din't follow an earlier post on this, but I have a floor jack and stands. Like to adjust the belt with the shock disengaged and adjust the preload while i'm at it |

I gotta tell ya that my bike does not shift well with a full quart of oil in the tranny! Also when you drain it pour it into an empty quart bottle, if it's much over a quart you may have a leaky crank seal. My bike is also crunchy into and out of third. According to my factory manual third requires two syncros to change two shaft speeds, the only time this happens in the shift cycle. Maybe a crunchy third is a little normal? I am going to take my primary apart this weekend and look at/replace the detent plate with the Y2k model and look at the pins in the shift drum as well as replace the primary tensioner. I will also check the oil pump at the same time. I plan to change the primary fluid to Red Line synthetic I read about somewhere. The last time I drained my primary it had like 36 ozs in it and shifted hard, now I wonder if my crank seal is leaking a little. It shifted much better at first but now after 2,000 miles is a little crunchy again. I think the L shaped exhaust bracket is the Y bracket? Can anyone provide a picture of the good vs bad? No One wears elephant bells, but I do look spiffy in Capri pants with plenty of calf showing when I ride.... |

Set the belt tension with the shock set up, the shock can effect the swingarm position and belt tension. Do you have the service manual with the procedure? I tried it all but finally set the stock shock all the way in and softened up the compression damping and it rides the best! I weigh 200 lbs too, don't do this if you are lighter. I have the manuals if you need some spec's. |

getting the rear wheel up is easy and cheap -- slide a piece of round stock through the rear axle and leve it up on your jack stands (first the right, then the left) there's a stand specifically for tubers that supports the bike from the rider's peg mounts, which will be necessary (or sumpin like it) if you want the rear wheel off the ground unloaded (i.e., without weight on the wheel) |

First thing I did was get a factory manual. well...the first thing I did was ride the thing. But thanks. |

Silas- Congratulations and Welcome!! You bought a great bike and came to the right place. I used to own a '99 M2 myself and now own an '04 Firebolt. About the shift linkage upgrade- there are actually two kits. One fits the X1 models and the other fits the M2/S3 models. They're basically the same setup except one is a little longer to suit the rear set pegs on the X1 models. The rear axle is indeed hollow. I never lifted mine that way but it seems like it would work well. For my Cyclone I had a CenterStand that lifted the bike from the peg mounts. it was great for most general maintenance. When you get a chance check out the C-3 forum. We have a local BRAG group that's based out of Shelons in Goldsboro. We occasionally meet up in Chapel Hill and go for rides in that area. Mike L. For a stand take the rear passenger pegs off, flip them and reinstall, put some tape on the frame if your worried about leaving a mark. Now put those jack stands under the pegs and lift takes some muscle and for some a friend, but cost nothing and does exactly what you need it to, just make sure your jack stands are tall enough and have some overlap so they don't rock around. I have been doing this way for three years. |

" ?!?!??!?!what have ya been using in there, Den? notice I never said there should be more than a quart, just a quart, otherwise there's a problem. Your manual shows synchros in thar'? dang. remmeber- the Euro-evo sportster trans always had a cheesy third-gear issue. take your trans and engine part 'til the cows come home, but often simply draining it (HOT!) and refilling with a Qt. and adjusting the clutch will fix the problems you mentioned. worth a shot, right? I've never had mine apart, and it shifts fine. when you go in there, you're going to feel compelled to change things, and later remember it as if you actually NEEDED the new parts. just run it. use sport-trans like the manual said. ....er... maybe not the manual with all them thar' synchros... |

"For a stand take the rear passenger pegs off, flip them and reinstall, put some tape on the frame if your worried about leaving a mark. Now put those jack stands under the pegs ...." this is a lot of extraneous work when you can actually just tilt the bike over toward theright, slide a jackstand under the left frame rear (or under the buddypeg MOUNT) and then roll it over onto that side, then do the same on the right. takes about 40 seconds including lining everything up. |

Yo Tramp, The service manual has a schematic of the tranny and how power flows. In and out of third gear involves sliding two syncros and changing the speed of two shafts. This is the only time when shifting that two syncros change two speeds and I conclude therefore that maybe, perhaps, crunchy third gears would be more or less normal? I know squat about euro-evo sporties. That said, unless you are a BRILLIANT psychologist or very good at covert lobotomy then you will never get me to stop taking things apart and trying to make them work better. Do I create my own mess and live a hellish existence of failure and leave poorly installed parts in my wake? Well just between us there has been some rumor that I bury things under the full moon... I have beer to deal with this. Taking my bike apart is ooohhh soooo much more fun than laundry and dishes, trash, and the occasional ride on my lawn mower. I also enjoy the Simpsons and playing tug of war with my dog. I am the kid that completely dismantled my dad's brand new self propelled sunbeam lawnmower to figure out how it propelled itself. Dad was livid and never got it together right, he should have let his 10 year old son do it. You ride, I ride and dismantle and ride some more. Same difference more or less... I gotta 24 year old Gold Wing too and I only ever change the oil, don't even wash it. Some things get me more obsessed than others. I never said that you said to use more than a quart of fluid. My point about the quart of oil is that if fluids are accumulating in the tranny something is amiss. I never admitted this but when I changed my tranny fluid I poured the old fluid (that was black and smelled suspiciously like engine oil) back into the quart bottle and lo and behold it was well over a quart, probably 36 ozs. When I filled up with a quart (of petrol oil, not synthetic) the tranny still shifted funky and then I recalled the words of two old HD mechanics, "they really only take 24 ozs, the manual is wrong". I drained out a bit until the fluid was at the level of the clutch and it shifted much better. That was 2,000 miles ago and now it shifts funny and I suspect that the tranny is overfilled again. If it is, and smells like engine oil I will change the crank seal. So, again, if the tranny has more than a quart of fluid in it when he drains it can be a clue to his funky shifting. And at the same time I will dismantle my tranny just to see how it works and put in a new shift detent just to see what it does. I'm also going to put in the primary tensioner. It may all be a waste of time but hell, since my meds ran out I gotta do something to keep the voices at bay.

Tramp My third gear has always sounded a little funny at low speeds I can feel it and hear it make just a bit of noise. Changed fluid at 2500 service and got major improvment. Sound is rare to hear and I almost never "feel" the slight crunch in the gear , I have to look for it in a low mph range to feel it and even now it is just a slight presence. Oh and hey the transmissions in a harley are probley the most simple 4 and five speeds in the world, there isnt much to see. And that really makes me wonder if there was a production problem with 3rd gear. (Message edited by mmmi_grad on July 28, 2005) |

The workstand that Spike mentions is currently out of production but the guy told me he is going to start making them again. That was about two months ago and I have not heard any more from him. Two jack stands work good, I use a piece of 3/8" rebar (24" or so) thru the axle. I lock the handlebars so I can use them for leverage, put the right stand in place, then put the left one close, lift on the handle bar, and push the stand into place with my foot. The side stand may not come up all the way but it will be very close. Now you can remove the derby hat cover without losing any primary oil! Jack |

Yep- The EVO Sportster Trans has had 3rd G. issues since day 1, and for some reason (kin yew say "synchros"... ah knew thatchee coooood) The Euro cluster had amplified issues w/same. I wonder that many trans issues could be the result of minor weeping of Engine oil through the RMS... I'm not big on using really highly efficient oils in my primary, being the bath is shared by mr. clutch, who likes some degree of friction, which a really high-grade oil would affect. I would not be surprised to hear from techs who know far more about oil than I do that this is backward thinking. I know mobil 1 is well-received choice in thar'... For the life of me I have had no luck finding out what, exactly, "sport-trans" is. the only other lube it seems similar to is fork oil or castor bean... |

I did! Sport-trans is semi-synthetic. Half synthetic and half semi-. |

That's bizarre, considering that sport-trans has been around for a long time. I know that in big twin gearboxes I refuse to use organic trans oil and I only use synth, for that application.- how and where did you get that info? |

COUNT ON HTTP://WWW.BLACKSTONE-LABS.COM THEY KNOW I cant wait to give them a sample of primary oil next time around. I do believe I may have some engine oil leaking in. Old oil was a little dark but right on the money level wise.?? (Message edited by mmmi_grad on July 29, 2005) |

Silas......you will be able to play the piano. The music/motorcycles problem is common and exists on various "levels" In my case, I keep guitars and motorcycles in the basement with tools and recording gear. The Grand Piano stays in the living room. You are not along in the world of Buell. Be glad that, to date, your affliction has not extended to aviation and photography.... |
