I have had one for about a year and a half and was changing the oil today, and noticed a fair amount of surface rust around the outlet pipe and some spots that look even worse under the chin spoiler. Anyone else having the same problem? I don't want to take it off and lose riding time, since I have very little time for even that, much less wrenching. |

stock muffler on my bike rusted, stands to reason that the drummer would do the same. get the stainless when he starts selling them. |

Steel will oxidize. Deal with it. Wire brush, wipe clean, apply naval jelly, prime, paint, done. |

What Blake said. Any steel pipe located down there is exposed to roadrash, water, sand, dirt, etc and then add to it the constant heating/cooling cycles it goes thru throughout it's days. It's tough being a pipe I guess! |

Treat as Blake said, then coat with the new textured spraypaints available. I did mine in charcoal and it's great. Has resisted all chips, scrapes, and rusting... |

What is the difference between the polished ceramic race muffler and the silver ceramic? Is the polished ceramic less susceptible to rust? |

Leeaw, if it's for a 9R I'll buy it from you. I've been looking for a rusty muffler to put on my 03 9R. That way It'll match my rusty head pipe & the peeling wrinkleblack finish on my primary cover. I'm going to flaunt the XB ratbike look! I'll give you my stock muffler plus $250 that way you'll have a muffler to use as a core if you decide to have another drummer made. |

I just don't have the time to waste taking it off and repainting, nor do I want it to get worse before possibly having it powdercoated. |

Kevin, I appreciate the refinish offer but I won't waste your time with that. Will hi-temp powdercoating do the trick? I had my old M2 headers done in gloss silver a few years back and it was quite durable, so I may just get the muffler done this winter. |

Just get the muffler ceramic coated. Not only will it bling, it will reduce engine temperatures and the heat put off from the bike. Performance Coatings (a shop here in OKC) will do a muffler for like $45-50 bucks. Great deal if you ask me. Chase |

For quick and easy short-term protection I've touched up mine with a hi-temp spray-can with the muff still on the bike, removed the chin spoiler to do the front, taped up the outlet to do the back. Works better than expected, a one-stubbie job. |

Wouldn't knocking the rust off and reducing the weight down low have the unwanted effect of raising the bike's CG? |
