I'm looking forward to seeing one one the floor and taking a long ride!! Innovating? Thought out? Purposeful? Improved? The ergonomics are really scaled up. The CityX is comfortable, I'm thinking the Ulysses is even more rider friendly. That suspension looks really promising! Really seems to be a 'riders' bike...one you could go a distance with or do duty as a serious commuter friendly machine. Have to admit the Barricade Orange color is...interesting and will make the bike quite visible---a good thing in traffic! Looks to have the now typical Buell stellar fit and finish. Thanks East Troy Crew, you've a lot to be proud about today. | ||

It doesn't look very passenger friendly though. I understand it is designed to be, but with no padding can you say sore a$$! Unless I am missing something? Also $1000 dollars for the bag set up? Why not offer it with the bike like the S2T/S3T did? Just my 2 cents... | ||

$1000.00 for bags in the ball park? I disagree. Buell is playing the HD game of over charging for accesories that should be STANDARD equipment! Will these bags crack like they did on the S3s? How are they mounted? My brother in law brought a BMW GS 1100 with hard bags, tool set, the entire package for $13,000. Now don't get me wrong this bike is not as exciting as my Cyclone but, the Buells cost the same when you are considering hardbags. Hard bags are standard on the BMW. Mike | ||

By Andrew Trevitt , Fran Kuhn Bagging It One of the big attractions of our sport-tourers is the fact that OEM hard luggage is available for three out of four of these bikes (the Honda being the exception). Accessories from the manufacturer generally fit right, work well and match the color of the bike. Our BMW, Ducati and Triumph all arrived with the required bracketry installed and the bags mounted, and we ordered up a set of Chase Harper soft bags for the Honda so it wouldn't feel left out. The BMW has the narrowest hard bags of the trio (our test unit came equipped with the city bags which are substantially narrower than the regular bags) combined with the lowest overall width. The Beemer's exhaust pipe arrangement means the bags are tall but not overly wide inside. The quality of the bags is excellent, with a sturdy three-point mount and separate latch for each unit. A two-stage handle can be used to open or remove the bags in approximately five seconds each, without requiring the use of a key (which is the ignition key). Cost of the BMW bags is $837.76. Yeah, I admit...I've been waiting for this moment and reading lots of tests. The BIG things, in my personal opinion, are that the Buell bags are "in the ballpark" in terms of price. Note the price above and go add the frame and you'll be with me on this. The going gets even better when you now realize that having that math centralized pipe the heck out of the way, downunder where it belongs. The Buell bags do not, ala many such bikes, stick out and span the better part of 5'. BMW, in an effort to assauge the ungainliness of their bags (which, make no mistake are INCREDIBLY well made) tucked in, is to make a majro cut out for the muffler. I have a BMW sitting here next to me with the bags if you need pics. This new Buell is the CAT'S MEOW! | ||

I just came from the accessories section of the Buell site. The side bags without the top case (with mounting brackets) are only $699.95. The same price as the Hepco & Becker bags for my wife's Moto Guzzi. If they're made to Buell's standard of quality, I think they're a bargain. I'm not much for "Adventure tourers" per se; but this Ulysses has got me thinking. It's nowhere near as pretty as an S3-T, but it should be a whole lot less problematic. My brother in law brought a BMW GS 1100 with hard bags, tool set, the entire package for $13,000. Now, I do believe it comes with a standard tool kit. Anyways, let's do some math here. I'm curious to see the total cost with all of this. XB12X price $11,495 Bags $999.95 Tool kit $99.95 Total $12,594.90 This is before tax tag title. I'm guessing after that it would be just a little bit more that $13,000. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's right in the ball park of the BMW your brother bought with all of that. | ||

A new BMW R1200GS with two side bags and one trunk bag will run closer to $17,000 list price. BMW Top Case: $428.57 Want a liner with that? Okay, please pay another $88.91. You want the saddle bags with liners too? A great deal at just $844.26. Oh you wanted locks and keys too? No problem, that's just another $48.80. Grand total to outfit your new R1200GS with the factory saddle bags and trunk including liners and keyed locks... just $1,413.81. Wait, did that include the mounting bracketry for the saddle bags?   So we have a new R1200GS for $15,490 with another $1,413.81 for saddle bags and trunk with liners and locks for a grand total of $16,903.81. Pretty close to my $17,000 guesstimate. Someone was complaining about the price of the Buell luggage? To be fair, I'm not clear on whether or not the Buell luggage includes liners. | ||

I'm glad you're coming around, just believe in the new Buell, it sure looks nice - competing with the Beemers again? I don't know if it's for me (I'd still like a test ride to make sure though) but I hope it sells well. | ||

The Ulysses does NOT include the tool kit, it's listed as available. This is a smart thing as many of us have Buell tool kits and have non interest in having it included in the price of the bike. Cool beans, me say. | ||

I have one and it is great, just add a shock preload adjust tool and wrench for the rear axle as required. I also added a nice super-compact complete set of 1/4" drive bits for torx, phillips, allen-head and conventional screwdrivers along with a 1/4" socket driver and I'm good to go. | ||

BMW bags can be had for around 500.00 They are super durable. I could cram my gym bag and use the lid as a lever to squezze it shut! If the Buell bags are as good the great. But come on Givi can make and sell nice bags - Why not buell? | ||

My two cents. I love this bike! The two up capacity I saw on the video really puts this bike in contention. The best Buell for two up riding since the tubers. I really want to know how durable the new 616 tires are, and how well a short legged person like me will fit on the bike. At a 32" seat height, my heels are not quite to the ground. I will have to try one out at the dealer when they get there. | ||

Sales tax @ 7%) Total $13,229.80 That's the way it would be figured at the dealership I was selling at. Your results may be different, but it gives one an idea. | ||

Mine have KILLER locks and latches and I just came back from a 20 mile ride. The thing I am most excited about, as I think about riding the Ulysses, is handling. The F650 is a great bike in many ways, but we had it lowered for Vick and it does some quite scary things. Definately not for a newbie. In addition, I took a series of pictures of the F650 today. Lots of hoses, plumbing, and gizmology. One thing that would send Erik Buell ballastic is something like 7 parts to compose one passenger footpeg. That would never pass muster at Buell. Court By the way....the cost of bags, in my world, is now a known fact. | ||

I'm thinkin the East Troy folks gots a winner -- slightly un-related question -- never having hard bags on a bike, I read with some puzzlement the oft-quoted "these bags will hold a melon-fitting full face Buco helment, with room to spare." Now, I figure if I'm riding, I'm likely gonna be wearing the trusty Buco -- if I'm riding somewhere that means I need the bags, they're likely gonna be full o stuff -- so, when I stop riding, am I gonna dump my stuff on the ground, lock up my Buco, and return to find ants and chain lube on my sox? or am I gonna leave one of the bags empty (like the HD guys with the steamer trucks mount up top?) or is it simply a convenient way to express the size of the bag? it's a puzzlement! | ||

If you use the bike as a commuter (and the carrying capacity and great fuel economy would make it a logical use) then the ability to lock your lid in one of the bags is a plus. If you're traveling, odds are you won't have room left to stow a lid. But as far as traveling, I think this bike needs a 6th gear. While (as is) it would be great for 'adventure touring' on roads with a lot of switchbacks, most of the highway miles across the fruited plain are rather dull straight lines. Getting from A to B at a higher rate of speed is a bonus. Kicking the mill into a 'cruise' gear for open road travel would complete this bike. As it is, I think it would be either a great commuter or a touring bike for someone who lived in an area with a LOT of curves. Put that bike on I-10 heading West from San Antonio going to El Paso and you'd likely tire of it before Fort Stockton. |
