So I stop for fuel and when I go to leave the pump the bike dies. I'm thinking " Dumba$$, you forgot to raise the stand. I kick at it and realize it's already up. This happened once before and I put the stand down and back up and that took care of the problem. Figured dirty contact. Try the same trick this time and no dice. I fart with it for about 15 minutes and still nothing. End up pushing it two blocks to my house. I prepare to test the switch as per the manual and discover the pivot bolt is snapped off right at the beginning of the threaded portion. With nothing to keep the pivot bolt snug the actuator pin on the switch pops out of it's detent hole causing it to not work.
Looking at the pivot bolt it (the threaded part) seems a bit too small to support the weight of a motorcycle.

I think that was a recall item, on the 05 they changed it made it bigger\longer but don't quote me

My pivot bolt snapped as well. Poor design. Fixed at no charge.

HMMM That's funny, my bike doesn't die if I take off with the kickstand down. Didn't realize it was down one day till I was going 65mph and rocket pulled up next to me freaking out.

Bad interlock switch, Phantom? Dunno. Anyway I got a new bolt ordered from the dealer. They said about a week, maybe longer with the long weekend.

'04 and newer XB models do not have a sidestand switch.

Dang Mark,

Whatcha been doing on that sidestand??? I knew that some stands were being replaced cuz they were too short. Didn't realize this many had snapped. I'll have to keep an eye on mine. Won't soon matter if I like the new ones!

Ya know, I don't think I do anything out of the ordinary on the sidestand. From time to time I will sit on the bike while it's supported with the stand, but not very often. And I try to keep my weight centered so there isn't excess pressure on it. Maybe I should spend some more time on the treadmill.

Here you go, Surlypacer. motorcycles.about.com/library/recalls/blmotorecalls012a.htm If I'm not mistaken, though, the sidestand on recall on '03 models was for the legs breaking. I know my bike had that upgrade done.

Look for an "R" stamped into the foot of the sidestand - them's the good ones

(it's on top. visible when stand is down.)

03 buell xb9sl side stand broke.
went to set down and it kept on going.
(didn't drop) I was still on the bike.

was under warranty.

purchasing dealer told me sidestand recall
was done.

repairing dealer has yet to finish paperwork
on warranty job. also, tried to blame me for
sitting on the bike while on stand.
ok ok perhaps thats true... but come ON
they should have a solid piece of steel not
some crappy electrical conduit tube !

question of whether selling dealer actually
DID the recall job. and the kick stand that
was installed for the repair looks like the same
*&^% tube. bout the size of electrical conduit.

buell could and should at least make that a forged
piece of steel; like the busa has.

why do they (buell) chince around on some tube steel and risk hundreds of dollars of damage on
our bikes ! or worse !!!!

what they need to do is fire all them union
bike builders and get some guys in there that
actually want to work !

lucky i didnt drop mine when i set it down
on the kick stand that day...

The recall calling for the "R" replacement was only for the '03 models.

Every manufacturer has problems the first few years of manufacturing a new product. Recalls are not uncommon, especially for a new model. I agree that the kickstand is pretty fragile looking, but I'm sure Buell has testing to show that it was safe to use in production. Testing can't replicate every possible scenario that the real world imposes on a part.

I've noticed Onebuell does a lot of comparing between the Hayabusa and the Buell. The two bikes aren't even similar, sure they both have 2 wheels, and an engine, but they don't have much else in common.

If you like the Hayabusa and think it's a better engineered bike, then buy one. I'm sure it has it's shortcomings too.

Mmmm.
Well I bought my current 03 XB9R from a guy in Dec. Called Buell to find out if there was a recall and they said they fixed the side stand. IE: Sent the part to the dealer that the guy bought it from. The owner said he never recalled it being fixed. I went to my loc shop they said it was replaced. Saw on the site about having a "R" looked at mine this weekend it is a "N" and is bent. Headed back to the dealer today. Then calling the Buell HQ tonight. Bottom line I want it fixed. Thanks for all the info posted out here on this site.

Ummm... actually... a steel pipe is stronger than a solid piece of steel of the same size & diameter. Maybe they need to use a different material or a different guage. Maybe the one you had was just simply defective?

In this month's Motor Cyclist, there is a piece on page 94 about spinning you bike around on the side stand. It looks like a great idea, I just wonder if the XB sidestand would hold up to it.

"Ummm... actually... a steel pipe is stronger than a solid piece of steel of the same size & diameter."

Ummm... no, it's not. A pipe is stronger than a solid bar of the same mass, though....

I saw a guy with a Gixxer spin it around on the side stand. Looked pretty cool, but the current pivot bolt won't stand up to it. You might get away with it once or twice, but that's about it. The load bearing part of the bolt is about 5/8" dia. but the threaded part can't be more than about 3/16" dia.
I recommend if you try it on a regular basis you keep a few spare pivot bolts on hand.

Ummm, you do realize 2 points here where you are totally & 100% incorrect?

#1. Buell outsources their parts....as do many many other manufacturers. The stand may be designed by them & installed by them but certainly isnt produced by them.

#2. Buell is a non-union shop.

Thank you & drive thu, nothing to see here.
