Awareness about hunger huh? hmmm

And here I thought it was all about raising awareness that members of bands like Deep Purple, The Who, Motley Crue, and Pink Floyd were still alive. And why are we always ignorant Americans?

Chill Rocket. Nobody denied that. But what does awareness accomplish?

"Live 8 made 2 billion people aware of the serious situation in Africa. Although they are still starving, they are very grateful of the global awareness Live 8 caused".

Blake, You know what gives me heartburn? Is that Bush is sending 15BILLION into oblivion. Actually, he's sending part of that into the hands of those that fund terrorism. Also, Africans openly admit they don't want to use condoms as a preventive measure agains AIDS. Women of every age get raped all the time. Then a big medicine producing company decides to fund a large project with free medicine which is now sitting in a storehouse because they lack personell to distribute it.

If anyone wants to know what happens with money raised, look at Tsunami disaster. THE perfect example. Billions raised, almost nothing is happening. The poor victims are going through the rotting remains to build themselves a new home. The whole world is aware of the situation though. People sit in the sun on the beach, while 100 meters further down they dig up the remains of rotting bodies from the sea. Large organisations are ready and waiting to start their work, but they are unable because of bureaucracy (spelling?) and corruption.

I can go on an on and on but in the end I will only myself off over things that are not within my reach to change.

Live 8 was about raising awareness.

Any reasonably intelligent person in the US, (there are actually quite a few) has been aware of the strife and turmoil in Africa since their childhood. The US media has been quick to jump on every war and famine since the begining of the 20th century.

The only people that ruined this thread are a handful of ignorant Americans.

Can anyone voice an opinion that you don't agree with without being called ignorant?

We aren't talking opinions. We're now talking life and death.

Rocketman,

Perhaps you should sell your bike and anything else you own that is not nessesary for survival and send the money to Africa... Show some commitment to the cause you believe in...

The only people that ruined this thread are a handful of ignorant Americans.

Just to clarify. Live 8 was not to do with raising money or feeding anyone you dumb f**ks. Live 8 was about raising awareness. Clearly something America is lacking then.

Well - I state the ignorant are those who think partying in front of a group of bands posing for the cause is going to do anything except make them feel as if they're doing something.

It's an impotent gesture, an excuse for a party with a face of false compassion.

Unfortunately those who advocate "rasing awareness" seem all too eager to also advocate flooding problems with funding - indirectly supporting warlords or existing bloated bureaucracies. If strings are tied to funds, you're "meddling" with rights of sovereign states to allocate funds as they see fit.

Sam Kinnison had the best idea for African Relief (I'm paraphrasing here - you need to SHOUT to put it in context):

Send in UHAUL!!
Get them the F**K out of the desert!
See this stuff?
It's F***ing SAND!
NOTHING GROWS IN SAND!!!
MOVE TO WHERE THE FOOD IS!!!

Of course you can apply Kinnison's logic to the Aids epidemic but in a way, the populations are self-adjusting instead of moving to an area which will support them.

Listen,

Don't talk about "ignorant Americans" and continue to spew lines like "No matter what the cost the dying has to be stopped." acting all holier then thou. Live 8 was a concert for celebrities to make themselves feel better and get some good press.

I have spent two years worth of weekends in the US Air Force Reserve (after 4 years active duty) as an Aircraft Loader filling aircraft full of donated medical supplies, clothing, and building materials. I've worked 18 hour shifts on a flightline in sub 0 temps to make sure those supplies were ready to go to third world destinations. I've helped sponser a 10 person team of missionaries from my church annually that just returned from Africa by donating money for medical supplies. I know about helping out and am not an "ignorant American".

Perhaps you should be the one to grab your ears and yell "POP" and once you have pulled your head out of your butt you will realize the comments you make are careless, dumb, and insulting to those of use actually making a difference in the world.

I started this thread as a celebration of music not a political debate.

It was a celebration of Music. And I agree that it was entertaining, but that's all it was.

You were the blurting out reckless comments and insluting an entire country which for the most part is filled with good hearted people! So you are welcome to apologize or remain a butthead... Either way, I won't lose any sleep over it...

Maybe once you do the same, you will feel differently and treat people differently.

I also spend my time working to make my home a better place. Here is a link to a current project I am working on Fox Valley Jail Ministries

I'd love to jump right into this debate. But I must step into it like it was paved with egg shells.

World poverty is a huge issue that must be addressed. Were Live Aid and Live 8 effective means to address it? I'm very skeptical about that. Does that make me an "ignorant American"?

World poverty, AIDS, etc. are complex political, economic and social issues. I'm skeptical that a "let's put on a show!" Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland script is an effective approach to these issues.

Ingemar,
Pretty sure that most American foreign aid to the poor is in the form of tangibles, not just monetary. We send food and other stuff deemed needed. We even send food to our enemies, like N. Korea.

Political arguments suck. Try to stick to facts and avoid emotional/opinionated statements.

Celebrities can certainly help raise awareness. How come we don't just put on a social security live aid fest and giterdone? Why not make taxes voluntary? I'd vote for that. I seriously would. If PBS can do it, why can't the state and federal government? Why when Cali was facing bankrupcy didn't the state simply ASK Californians to pitch in and donate a few extra hundred or whatever they could afford?

I just don't get the thinking that our governments, local, state, and federal, must in effect put a gun to our heads and extort money with the threat of prison if we don't pay up.

It's the BadWeB way. If we want to raise money for what we deem is a worthy endeavor, we ask for it. Works pretty well.

Dang, the cable just went off and I lost my digital music feed. Cable box is in download mode, probably telling the cable company what all I have been watching.

I gotta get off this California lag. Dang, it's near time to get up.

John, I did. About several hours before your post - which is when I edited my previous posts.

Thanks for the heads up anyway.

No harm done and my apologies for the (ignorant) American's comment.

Not wishing to sound like an old git but you have to admit The Who and Floyd were brilliant. Annie Lennox just absolutely as always had her heart on her sleeve whilst that sleeze bag Madona was only interested in stealing the limelight. Her performance however was bloody good.
