I recently took delivery of a new XB12S. It has been working just fine and I am trying to (almost) break it in according to Buell's recommendations. So anyway, I was out driving today and had to stop for gas. I left the gas station happy and started to make my way home. After a mile or so I noticed a sound when opening the throttle. I am no mechanic but I thought it was pinging or misfiring. When I stopped along the road there was some smoke coming out of the exhaust, which worried me. I pulled over and decided to make sure that I hadn't put to much oil in it, I recently added some. The oil level was ok. So I pulled away again but the misfiring, or what ever it was, kept happening whenever I tried to accelerate slightly. After a few miles I decided it was not good and it was not going away, so I stopped at the nearest gas station. I assumed it was something wrong with the fuel since the problem occurred just after refueling (Gas from a small rural BP station, supposedly 93 octane but maybe contaminated with water?). I emptied the tank on any fuel I could get out of there and filled here up again, the bike would not start at all... So, there I was stuck maybe 20 miles from the dealer. I called them and they were able to come and pick me up and they took the bike to the shop... Any ideas what might have happened? I really hope it’s a one-time thing due to poor gas and not a general reliability issue. I really like this bike!! The bike has only been on the road for 360 miles so far. |

Color of smoke? I think it was more towards grey/white.. I do not think it was diesel, it definitely smelled like Gas. I will call the shop tomorrow, hopefully they have time to look at it soon... When I first took delivery of the bike it would not run good at the dealer and they had to replace a spark plug (the bike had one owner before that returned it after crashing another bike of his, it had 95 miles on the odo). |

Did it lose power and smoke? C.E. (check engine) light? Did it not idle right or at all? |

It lost power; any time I would try to accelerate slightly it would misfire. There was some smoke and it looked and smelled a little like oil, that’s why I checked the oil level (that was OK). It had problem idling but it did run in the beginning. The CE light did not come on until the engine stalled. |

definitely figure out if the engine light comes on. I believe sometimes the engine has to warm up so show up, and resets light when shut off. Could be possible timing issue. Try simple stuff within your ability and if all else fails take it to the dealer. It's still under warranty. |

yeah a mix of diesel and gasoline will run like that, and still "smell like gas" |
