I have almost the same setup as Ejii's (thanks by the way for sharing your design). The only difference is that I used 3/4" clear tube about 10" long. Stuck about 2" long 3/8" tube inside the top end so that it fits the 3/8" tee and stuck a 3/4" connector with a screw cap (available at HomeDepo) at the bottom end. It's got a load of volume for capturing fluid. All I see is water being captured (and not that much). I also drilled a hole through the filter holder base and routed the breather filter so that it resides next to the main filter (someone here did that). |

Airbox mod complete! Sure does look nice but I will have to wait until tomorrow to see if I have positive results. Dcmortalcoil, I did the same thing with my breather filter. I'll try to post some pics soon, I will have to borrow a camera though. Ken |

If you run a breather hose up hill the oil mist will run back towards the motor. It needs to be left open to breath or have a filter or a small auto PCV valve. |

I'm a bit confussed. If I just chop some holes in my airbox, is there any reason why I would want to add a catch can? |

I originally had the filter hose come up through the air cleaner base and reside near the main filter. That actually may be better in the final analysis. Some negative air pressure applied to the PCV system can be a good thing. One of the possible drawbacks of the drain tube system we are using is the possibility of the system becoming pressurized causing the goop to come out the filter and make a mess. Most of the deposits are pretty heavy so the junk will, for the most part, pass right in to the drain tube. A catch can is a better solution because there is no direct connection between the engine PCV hose and the filter hose. I am working on a prototype catch can made out of a plastic bottle at a cost of $1.00. When I get it set up I'll post some pictures and get your feedback. The whole thing will still cost under $10.00. |

I was actually contemplating adding a "breathing hole" near the top of the clear tube and covering with a fine mesh screen to relieve any back pressure problem. Perhaps a small one way valve can be inserted through the side wall to relieve any back pressure. But I figured that since the clear tube has a much larger cross section than the 3/8" tube, the pressure in the clear tube will stay lower than the 3/8" tube to prevent back pressure. |

Wheelsleaning I would say the answer is to keep all that crap from getting in the engine. |

I tried the one way valve, you can get those near the PCV valves in any auto parts store for $3-4 bucks. It would build up so much pressure and blow the off the hose. Maybe your outcome would be different. That system just needs to breathe and dumping it back down the fuel intake is maybe not the best solution, but it is the best solution yet. |

Kaese, Did your system have a filter like Ejii's setup? It shouldn't build up that much of pressure since the engine can still breath through the filter. For my setup, I was contemplating still maintaining the filter, and adding a one-way valve near the top of the clear tube just to maintain a lower or ambient pressure at the clear tube side. It's more for balancing pressure so that gook that comes out of the engine can flow better down the clear tube. |

Only relating my experineces with an S2 with Thunderstorm Heads and pistons. Had the after market air filter also. Ran the puke lines from the bottom of the crank breather and the butterfly valves from the top of the heads to the rear fender with a breather higher than any of the valves, with a catch can lower than the heads, in addition to an air breather. Still puked all over the place. Had the white wheels. Needed a commuter and I didn't need problems of oil leaks. Ended up getting a XB instead. Don''t get me wrong, the S2 is a fantasic bike. I just thought a new XB was a better choice for what I needed. |

The NorrisPerformance setup "seems" to me to be the hot ticket right now. It's a tad spendy for sure, but it comes with all the features and it looks really nice . |

M1 are you referring to the norris catch can or something more in depth that includes norris' catch can |

The norrisperformance setup is nice. In theory it's the best way to vent the PCV system. It is pricey. For me, I would prefer an opaque plastic catch can, much like the JAZ units out there for autos. It's light, you can see through it so you won't forget to drain it, drains easily and is less expensive but just as effective. I have a nice plastic bottle I'm going to use for a prototype setup. It will have all the features of the JAZ unit but it's black so you can't identify the crud level instantly. I might get to it this weekend. |

After riding for about 250miles on my "cheap" breather system, functionally I really don't see the need for any expensive alterative. Mine cost less than $20 - that's with the parts bought at HD store. On the other hand, if you have the money to burn, and all you are looking for is a style, that's a different story. |

OK, finally got to put some more miles on the cityx today, its about time! All this rain in FLA is killing me. I have a couple of questions regarding the open airbox since I tried it today: 1- is it supposed to be that loud? it sounds like something is rattling or something when I hit he gas. 2- there is a hesitation at low speed now, I did not run it for quite 10 minutes at 3200rpm, more like about 8 minutes, cagers would not get outta my way. Could that be why? 3- there is smoke coming out of my breather filter. Now I have seen mist come out with my cyclone right after I start it but this was after a 20 minute ride. Is this normal? Other than that, it looks cool! Ken |
