Are my headers supposed to be touching the frame on an '02 X1W? I noticed the frame was a little hot after I last rode (don't ask me how I happened to notice . . .) and upon inspection, noticed the the pipe coming from the rear cylinder was resting against the frame. Will this eventually burn the powder coating off and start rusting? How can it be corrected (does it need correction)? Thanks, Bob |

The closest the rear pipe comes to the frame on my 99 X1 is about 3/8". Check the muffler mounts under the motor, if they are loose or broken the exhaust can rotate allowing the rear pipe to touch the frame. Mark |

The rear pipe should NOT touch the frame. Check all the mountings like Mark said. Leaving it this way will lead to a failure somewhere. Good chance it would be a broken header stud in one of the heads. Not fun to fix.... Loosen all the header and muffler mounts/brackets/bolts. Then realign everything so no part is under stress or twisting. Then tighten everything back up using the proper torque settings. Particularly on the header nuts. |
