Around 4700 miles on her now and she has trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd at high rpms, slips to neutral. I never do clutchless from 1 to 2, but sometimes thru the rest. Think I'll have to bring her back to the doctor, 2 hours away?

check your primary chain tension. If its too loose it will cause that, also check the primary fluid level.

Primary should have chain diameter size play in the inspection port right? I checked it a few hundred miles ago, seems fine, and the fluid is perfect.

Doubt you can bend a shift fork on that harley tranny, those things are pretty massive affairs. There is a little pawl adjustment in there that might be worth trying to tweak, but what you describe sounds like worn dogs.

It could also be broken up bearings in your 5th gear drive assembly. Can't get at that on an XB without a lot of dissasembly.

Probably just worn dogs. I would have to look back at the manual to be sure, but I believe the gears that engage 2nd gear also come into play on other gears.

Don't do clutchless shifting. It busts up Japanese bikes also, people think it does not because the bike usually gets totalled before the tranny has a chance to show the problem. I have a friend that runs a mom and pop UJM shop, and he is forever replacing these things on all brands of sportbikes.

Reepicheep: Got it, use clutch. So if the chain tension is set then I guess I'll be bringing it back to my (damn) dealer again.

I have the same kind of thing happening, every once in a while when shifting from 1st to 2nd it will go into neutral, but the neutral light doesnt come on. I have to shift again to get it into 2nd.

You might also adjust the shifter to give you more leverage on the upshifts.

Indy... I have heard that after a missed upshift from first to second that you should then shift down to first.

Or was it the other way???

Anyone else know the scoop?

I was having trouble with first to second shift after the bike was warmed up. It shifted rough, but only from first to second. I took the bike into the dealer (the warranty runs out early next month)to have them check it out. I got the call today that they are going to have to split the cases and inspect the transmission. They think it may be a shifting fork. I'm just glad that it's still under warranty.

Another thing I have noticed sometimes when I change shoes/boots I will miss first to second because I am not getting enough leverage. So you might also play around with moving the linkage up and down to get more leverage.
And M1 when you let the clutch out and your wide open to shift from first to second and then you hit neutral, all that rotating mass in the tranny is spinning very fast so if you hit second it will make a loud clunk and is hard on engagement dogs. Its best to just let off the throttle and slow down and then shift. Kinda of the same thing when you see guys reving the bike up and neutral while at a stop and then shift into first and you hear it grind and clunk.

I have the same problem of missing the 1st to 2nd shift (no neutral light) every once in a while. It doesn't happen as often as it used to. With time the frequency of it has gone down, but it still happens every now and then (twice this week). I have about 4400 miles on the bike and the primary chain tension is good.

And just for the record, another thing that can kill your dogs is a trashed 5th gear drive assembly. I think this generally results from improper belt tension (which you get if you follow the manual), so is not an issue for XB's (as the belt tension is always right), but would be for the tubers.

I have a 03 xb9r bought used in Feb with 1800 miles. Now have 5,000. Ever since I purchased the bike shifting from 1 to 2 has been more difficult to get it smoothly than any other gear.

On my bike I have learned to wait/delay just a second after pulling the clutch before shifting into second. Goes in smooth every time when I do this. Every other gear shifts I do normal and it shifts great.

Checked the Primary adjust just last weekend,while changing fluids and it was in spec.

Also, just for the record, I do not do clutchless shifts on this bike.

However, it is not uncommon for me to do them on my Yamaha 01R1. I have 45,000 miles on it and no problems at all. Matter of fact I am still on the original clutch.

But there is a difference between the gear box on my R1 and my XB9R.
