from www.nhra.com: The 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway, Pomona California: Track records threatened as Pros lay down opening qualifying blasts. ...Las Vegas winner Chip Ellis continues to look sharp on his G-Squared S&S Buell V-Twin, posting a 7.063 at 187.36 mph to take the early lead in Pro Stock Bike. This is just the fourth start in an NHRA event for Ellis, who was the No. 1 qualifier in his debut at Indy earlier this year. Chip Ellis "The only word that can describe my run is awesome," Ellis said. "George Bryce and Ken Johnson [co-crew chiefs] had the bike tuned just right for the conditions here at Pomona. The bike ran straight, I made the shifts on time, and the result was an awesome opening pass." text and photo copyright National Hot Rod Association |

from www.nhra.com: Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA FinalsDay 2, Friday 11/12/2004: Anderson closes on another record; Kalitta, Worsham, Ellis still on top ...The other Day 1 leaders — Top Fuel's Doug Kalitta, Funny Car's Del Worsham, and Pro Stock Bike's Chip Ellis — were mostly unchallenged Friday as Thursday's clouds and cooler temperatures gave way to moderate heat and lots of sunshine. Great side by side pass for the two bikes with the best times of the session, but no improvement for either. Chip Ellis and his Buell Firebolt did us all proud in Pomona today, and missed making it to the championship round by an eyelash: from www.nhra.com: Round 3 Finals, Sunday 11/14/2004 (W) Angelle Savoie (US Army Suzuki) RT: 0.051 ET: 7.081 Speed: 187.96 (L) Chip Ellis (G2/Star/S&S Buell) RT: 0.007 ET: 7.129 Speed: 187.18 ...Ellis nails the tree and leads to well past the 1000 foot lights, where Savoie finally gets past. Angelle Savoie's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.026), 330 ft(-0.010), 660ft(-0.008), 1,000ft(-0.006). MOV: 0.0041 seconds (approximately 14 inches). and to top it all off, Chip's a heck of a nice guy.

from www.nhra.com: Ellis reaches semifinals Pomona, Sunday:After qualifying No. 2 with the fourth quickest elapsed time in Pro Stock Bike history, Chip Ellis, aboard the G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell, advanced to the semifinals of the NHRA Automobile Club of Southern California Finals before losing to Angelle Savoie. En route to the semifinals, Ellis defeated Karen Stoffer in the opening round and Steve Johnson in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals against Savoie, Ellis got a clear advantage at the green but couldn’t hold off the hard charging three-time PSB champion. Savoie crossed the finish line in 7.081 seconds at 187.96 mph. Ellis followed slightly behind in 7.129 seconds at 187.18 mph. The margin of victory for Savoie was a minuscule .004 of a second. “It was a good four-race season for us,” said Ellis, who joined G Squared Motorsports, owned by George Smith and George Bryce, at Indy. “Obviously, it was a disappointing loss today but we sure did give it our best shot. The bike ran great all day but just got outrun by Angelle and the Army team.” “After running so good in qualifying, the G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell experienced battery, battery cart and wiring problems after the opening round and the second round. We got back on track in the semifinals only to lose a close one to Angelle,” said Bryce. “I’m glad to see the Army team do so well. “We got a lot of tune up help this weekend from Tom Smith and John Olson of S&S. I’d like to thank Brett Smith, president of S&S Cycle, for helping to make this program possible. He’s always pulling strings and pushing buttons to insure this program has the best of everything. We wouldn’t be anywhere without his help.” Bryce’s partner Smith added, “We have a great team. The season has been a remarkable success for us to run four races after the 40-pounds of additional weight rule and perform like we have. I am disappointed that we went out in the semifinals but the team still gets an A for their work today. I want to thank George Bryce, Ken Johnson and Chip Ellis for their contribution to this program and to Todd Olson and the guys at S&S for building a great engine.” |

the posts immediately preceding this were, for the most part, rescued from the General Discussion Board so they wouldn't get archived and disappear into the vast e-void. if it appears that i've become a big Chip Ellis/G Squared Racing fan, well, you're amazingly astute. Chip made his NHRA Pro Stock Bike debut in Indy, and qualified #1! (the first driver in NHRA history to qualify #1 in his/her first race!) in fact, in the four events he and the team participated in this year (Indianapolis, Reading, Las Vegas, and Pomona), they qualified 1st, 4th, 2nd, and 1st (WOW!), with a HUGE win in Vegas and a semi-final appearance at Pomona, losing to the US Army Suzuki of Angelle Savoie by a miniscule 0.0041 seconds. Real. Darned. Impressive. |

we cranked out the "Chip Ellis loves..." sign in the parking lot after we got to the track (recycling, of all things, a FedEx envelope). (Message edited by jerry_haughton on November 21, 2004) |

and to prove he's just a regular guy, he added THIS: Chip & Co. couldn't have been any more cordial and friendly and accomodating, even allowing us access to their pit to shoot photos of the bike (even the mechanics were cool with this!), and answering questions and posing for pix. Chip made us all laugh when he correctly observed that he enjoyed posing with Denise MUCH more than he enjoyed posing with me. it was fun to get to know the guy a bit, and their performance this weekend - and this year - was remarkable. it'll be fun to watch them in 2005. I'm thinkin it's no coincidence that most racers are gracious, people-loving folks -- I"m also thinkin that's why I enjoy flattrack and drag racing so much -- the teams and riders are very approachable thanks for introducing us to another great racer, JH |

hey, guess who won their second NHRA event today in only nine tries? congrats Chip Ellis and the G-Squared S&S Buell !!! photo copyright National Hot Rod Association and RacersEdgePhotography.com from NHRA.com: "Sending the best "Get Well" message possible to his injured crew chief, Ken Johnson, Ellis took home the hardware by thrashing a dead-late Scali in the Pro Stock Motorcycle final. This one was over at the line when Ellis' mediocre .063-second light was completely overshadowed by Scali's .242. Just for good measure, Ellis ran through the lights with a 7.203 at 180.79 to Scali's 7.343 at 179.30 mph. "Although this was just his ninth race on the NHRA circuit, Ellis was rock solid in guiding his G-Squared S&S Buell V-Twin past Matt Guidera, Columbus winner Ryan Schnitz, and three-time world champ Angelle Sampey."
