I am going to check out a 2003 Lightning this afternoon. Anything in particular I shold ask. The only recall I can find is something about the kickstand. Any UNofficial recalls? Common problems? He is asking 6k OBO, low miles, stock I think. Whatshould I offer? I am new to this board and have only started to research some ofthese questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wheel bearings were updated. New inproved bearings should have a orange dust cover. The original bearing covers were black, any dealer should replace free of charge.
New kickstand should have an R stamped into the metal pad that touches the ground.

I had speed sensor go bad, replaced twice.
Oil lines leading to/from oil cooler rub together causing wear. Check the two cables in front of the engine for wear. Go for it, dunno about price though.

There is an updated speedo sensor that SHOULD solve the speedo problem, ask if he has every replaced it.

The belt update is a fairly extensive process, would be nice if it is done but no need to. It extends the life of the belt by quite a bit. A stock belt will last 10000 to 15000 miles MOST of the time.

check to see if its got the Race Kit installed.
A obvious clue would be the muffler.

This is a great board! Thanks! Are any of these "updates" free or am I gonna have to pay for them? The only "official" recall is the kickstand, the updates might get a little pricey, esp the belt!

Speedo sensor is not a problem on the Lightnings, they were right from day one.

There are actually two belt upgrades, the first is very straightforward, the replacement part for your current belt is a much better part then the original, and nobody here would bat an eyebrow if your original ('bad') belt went over 10k miles with not problem. Reasonably cheap, you are just buying a new belt.

The "stage 2" upgrade would be to replace both pulleys, the tensioner, and the belt with the all new parts. DaveS worked out all the parts a long time ago, it aint' cheap, but it's not insane either.

It was cool of Buell to give both options.

A great many (not all) of the "chronic broken belts" were related to mechanic handling issues, or to "owner removed belt guards" problems.

I love my lightning...

But it sounds like I WOULD have to pay for the updates, right? I currently have an FZ1 which is a GREAT all around bike, already modded, jetted, etc., but just seems a little bland lately. I really need to demo one, but I'd have to go to Atlanta to do it......

The bearings are free. The original bearings ended up having a service life far shorter than they should have so the replaced then all for free.

The belt is your choice, nothing wrong with the original the repalcement is better. this will cost you money.

Nightwatchman! How ya doin' bro. I'm over on the FZ1 board too. I sold mine last year after I bought my Gixxer. I just bought an '03 XB9S last month. It's a fun bike.

I don't know that I'd get rid of my FZ1 though.

Just my 2 cents.

Hey VRoom! Good to see another FZ owner on the board! What are your opinons on the XB9S? How is it compared to the FZ (maintenance as well as performance?) Have you done any of these upgrades? What did you pay for YOUR bike? I'm curious as to why you bought yours? Are you missing your FZ?
