captions will come later. between fatigue and alcohol, i'm surprised i even got THIS far. this thread is a bike trip that me 'n D took from Lake Isabella, CA to Sacramento, CA and back over the weekend of 5/14-15-16/2005 to help my Mom celebrate her ??th birthday. (i think she'd be ok if i told you she was born in the Roaring 20's...) joining in on the shenanigans was Dino and Char, my uncle/Mom's brother Rocky, and my oldest brother Lonnie and his wife Maribeth. for now, you're gonna have to figure out who they are on your own. this is me n' my Mom taking a train ride (our first together!) in Old Town Sacramento on Sunday:  but i'm getting ahead of myself. this is one of Mom's birthday presents from me 'n D, and that is NOT a sepia-toned version of Denise on the far left (but that IS my Mom, me and my daughter Brynn):  yep, there's a story (isn't there always?), but you're gonna hafta come back to hear it. ride to learn, Ferris Bueller so here's the deal on the group pic above. it was shot in 2004 on the occasion of my Mom's ??th birthday by my Hooligan friend Jim Corso, and is of Denise, my Mom, me and my daughter Brynn. when we bought the frame for the enlargement i commented to Denise how sad it is that all the stock "photo families" you see in the picture frames for sale at the local drug store are immediately ripped out of said frame and tossed in the trash. well, one thing led to another, and once i realized that the pose of the girl in the B&W photo that came with the frame was PERFECT, right down to "my" arm and hand reaching around my Mom and embracing the girl's shoulder, well, you can see the rest. Denise laughed and laughed, and was in the decision-making process from the get-go, but as an extra giggle said that when my Mom unwrapped the pic, she (Denise) was gonna haul off and hit me, and state something along the lines of, "How dare you!" well, i don't remember exactly what kind of verbal disgust that Denise pretended (?) to produce when the pic was unveiled, but she DID haul off and WHACK me in front of my Mom and my uncle! the things i do to entertain you people.  this is at a rest stop on Highway 99 early Saturday morning, on our way to hook up with Dino and Char. D took a liking to this old Honda 750 that was parked near us while its owner took a smoke break. we eventually struck up a conversation with the slightly eccentric rider, who, it seems, has made a career out of buying old Japanese bikes cheap (mostly older Hondas), getting them running and road-worthy, and then... ...nope, NOT selling them. he says he has every one he's ever rescued, still sitting in his garage. cool! he bought this '76 CB750 for exactly a hundred bucks, and it ain't exactly a show piece (busted this, bent that, rust, chain lube EVERYWHERE), but he's quick to point out that it's bored to 900 cc and runs like the wind. i was, i admit, a little skeptical about the RLTW comment, but he popped it off and it sounded FANTASTIC thru the 4-into-1 Kerker (with absolutely not a hint of a baffle), with not even a whisper of smoke or mechanical clatter. it really DID sound impressive, super-quick to respond to throttle and with a wicked, nasty snarl. the windshield he fabbed himself from a chunk of the bulletproof glass that separates the front seat and back seat of a cop car. why not just buy a shield, i wondered out loud. seems he took an owl hit at speed (the owner stated several times that he enjoys cruising at over a hundred) with an after-market shield, and the owl apparently slowed only slightly as it obliterated the shield and then proceeded to try to forcibly evict him from the bike. to get the side-to-side bow in the shield? he placed the material on a couple of 4X4's spaced just right and backed his truck up onto the shield until he was happy with the degree of deflection, and then set about affixing all the hand-made hardware. cool!!!  this is a shot of Denise at the Yosemite Coffee and Roasting Company in Oakhurst, CA, admiring the works of none other than Charlotte Hoffman, Dino's MUCH better half. Char's works are displayed with those of several other local artists, courtesy of the Yosemite Western Artists and Williams Gallery West, and are yours for the viewing thru July 15.  this is looking WAY down from California's legendary Highway 49 to Lake McClure and the Bagby Recreation Area, with the very same Hwy 49 snaking up the other side of the canyon and disappearing in a blaze of two-wheeled glory. what a treat! Highway 49 is Most Excellent, and a most excellent way to get a little bit of California's Gold Rush history on you. bring a motorcycle or a sports car -- any other mode of transport on this road should be illegal.
