i have a set of what we call cep's in the aviation world they are earplugs with holes in them i dont think you can buy them i had to convert one of my issued sets to accept 1/8th inch plug. they make my force pipe seem like a dull roar. or better yet you could ride with someone who has a force and you wont even hear your jardine  |

I find the exhaust noise from the Drummer is worse ,wearing a full face helmet, than a 1/2 lid. |

CEP's are available right here where I live. I use them everyday flying Blackhawks. Google Communications and Ear Protection. They will put whatever plug you want on the end. Work great, last long time. Ask for Vic (engineer) or Ben (owner)when you call and tell him Odie sent ya.

Old tech, cotton balls from CVS drug store.Whole bag under a buck. Generally seperate one ball in half, one set of ear plugs from each cotton ball.Find them more comfortable then foam squeeze type, forget there in sometimes. Easy to carry spares,sanitary , just chuck em. Effectiveness can be tuned. |

They are, without a doubt, the best audio quality headphones that offer hearing protection on a lever of regular ear foamies. The greatest thing I ever did was order a set for use when riding, both for the MP3 player, and my cell phone (no need to remove helmet to take a call, just PULL OVER, answer call, hold phone like walkie talkie and chat away, ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD!

Wheels, let me know how much it is for a set. I still need something like this for long rides this summer. We've had this discussion before, here's the CEP web link. All I can say is I'm not going to use the iPod again until I have some sort of earplug/speaker combo. With just the earbuds I need to crank it up all the way and it's basically double the noise without any earplugs, major ringing. For now I'll just stick to earplugs until I get some CEP's. |

I think it was $65 + shipping. A few guys on here rave about the CEPs, I'm just wondering how much better they are than my $50 sony set. I'm sure they are more comfortable than mine though. |

That's not bad for what you get, I'm sure these are quite rugged if they're for military use. I'm really excited about the idea of foam earplugs with speakers inside. I prefer the expandable foam earplugs to the rubber finned ones. Plus if you compare $65 to the ones listed here for $150 it's a pretty good deal. Ben steered me to their "lawnmower" model for stereo receivers. I didn't even think about that but it's another good use. Besides that I plan on using these with my iPod for when I fly (which is a lot recently) rather than getting those jumbo Bose noise canceling headphones. |

Another way to go is with a chatterbox. You can plug your MP3 into it and turn it up so you can hear it while wearing foam earplugs. That's what a buddy with Termignoni's on a 748 does....
I would let you know who it works with my 12R and Jardine when I get around to installing the X1 I bought, but I don't have an MP3 player yet.
BTW, I have found the tan foam ear plugs "Quiet Please" brand, to work the best. I've tried the green foam from Cycle Gear and also the Orange Foam from Home Depot and found them a little more comfortable, but the problem with those is that once they warm up it is hard to get them all the way in the ear canal. The basic foam type work better as they slim down even after use by spinning them in you fingers. That allows them to go all the way in. With the Jardine, I have found that the worst thing is an ear plug that's not fully inserted, or sealing. It seems like a really damaging resonance gets by the plug in that case.
As for the quiet core insert, on my 12 it feels and sounds like someone put a potato in the exhaust. I'm thinking of getting the bore opened up halfway between the open exhaust and the current quiet core diameter in hopes of reaching a better compromise. Also the insert is a royal pain in the ••• to remove.

Dudes, I have the final solution...
I have tried everything, EVERYTHING(!)- C.E.P.'s, ear buds, helmet speakers, blah, blah, blah, even installed the ear cups from a flight helmet in a shoei, speakers and everything. Nothing works as good as this which has just become available...
These yellow ear plugs will look familiar to you military types soon, if not already. Here at Ft Hood they are handed out at the TMC's, and available at the Clothing Sales store for 8 & 1/2 bucks a pair.
They are mounted on a pair of Sony earphones that by far, provide the best quality music sound already, they are $40.00 at Best buy and Target. Look for them NEAR the other headphones and earbuds. I say NEAR because they seem to be marketed as special, to get you to believe the $40.00 price.
So... The yellow earplugs have a hole all the way through them already, and fit on the earphones without modification, just wiggle them on as their hole is slightly smaller than the earphone going into it.
These work better than anything, ANYTHING I have tried, ever, and I have tried a lot.
They are washable, too.
Mine are white($50.00). They have a shorter chord, with an additional extension, and gold plugs, ooooooooohhhhhhh... The $40.00 ones are black and the working parts are the same.
Trust me, there is no better solution, even the custom-made $200.00 ones from the doctor guy through mail order.

P.S.
I have straight pipes, so my exhaust is um, louder than a really loud thing being especially loud, and these block enough noise, almost as much as the best disposable earplugs, and with my !Pod the music is MORE than loud enough.

One more thing- I would get something other than an !Pod next time because you can't adjust the volume with a glove on! Only with a bare finger, or the thinnest of gloves. I think the little touch disk needs static electricity from your finger. So an inline volume adjustment is in order, then. |

Thats the same set I have (slite dif tips). They work pretty well. I just took my Jardine appart to replace some loose rivets and noticed the can has very little packing ! Like just half full . I only have a little over 1500 miles on it, so I don't think it should be time to repack. I'm trying to find some packing now to re-stuff it. Where do you find this stuff? Local auto parts stores don't stock it... |

Does anyone know of any earplugs that effectively reduce the sound of the pipe but don't block out all of the ambient sounds i.e. cars, car horns, etc. That is the only thing that bothers me about wearing earplugs. It is quite disconcerting to ride without hearing what else is going on around you. |

I will second the Shure E2C's. You can take them to your local audiologist and get earmolds made. They pop right in, sound great, and you don't have to replace foam like on the CEP's. They can mold a filter in so they won't block everything out.
By far, without question, the best hearing protection you can get. |
