XBers, My bike has picked up a strange new vibration. Comes in like turning on a switch at 3600 rpm; low frequency, about 90-120 cycles per minute; goes away for the most part at about 4100 rpm. If I pull in the clutch and let the engine idle it goes away. Any ideas? I didn't notice it until I pulled the snorkel, but could that have an effect??? Thanks, Bill | ||

I experienced something similar with my stock 2003 XB9SL. I was posting as bradj in a previous incarnation here. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/42964.html I never determined what was causing it,or if it was anything to be truly concerned about. I think the tires/wheels or something in the drive train were self resonating...which is generally not good for mechanical devices... stuff waaay above my head. FWIW, the current owner of my XB9SL wrote me that the only problems he has had with the bike after 11K miles was a broken clutch cable and a cross threaded oil drain plug [compliments of one of my servicing dealerships]. This suggests to me that this probably is nothing to be concerned about. | ||

Yes, it seems to be some sort of resonance. The strange part is it just started happening. I try not to worry too much about little things, but sometimes a new noise or vibration is the first sign of trouble. Thanks for the reply, Bill | ||

Update...although it wasn't very scientific, I changed two things at once, since I'm more interested in stopping the vibration than in finding out what was making it happen. Anyway, one other time I had felt a similar vibration, and that was when the drive chain on a previous motorcycle was too tight. Made me think maybe the primary chain was too tight on my XB. Checked and adjusted the primary, and also re-installed the snorkel. The vibration is gone. Bill | ||

Xring, so was the chain too tight? I have the exact same vibration in the same RPM range. Weird. I've checked the chain, it wasn't too tight at all. This is very weird that it happens all of a sudden and it happens to multiple people. I've taken it to a dealer. The guy treat rode it and seems to be normal to him. He visually checked engine mounts and nothing wrong with them. |
