I have been completely happy with my 04 XB12R that I bought from Tilley's back in February. I have since had more clues on my bike as to what was done with it before I had it. When I bought my bike it had about 50 miles on it. I didnt start to wonder until I went to change my muffler to the Buell race pipe and found the Front Muffler Mount bolt snapped off. I was like how the f&*^ did that happen? Obviously someone was working on it before I bought the bike. I was like fine no big deal. So I get that fixed. Then the other day I am working on my bike, its up on that homemade stand (ok its an engine hoist but it works) and I notice one of the front header bolts is missing. Now I am starting to get irritated. What was Tilley doing with my bike before I bought it. Do I have a reason for concern here or am I just over reacting. I am more upset about the bolt they snapped off rather than the missing header bolt but cmon, this is a brand new bike. John |

First pic shows where the front muff mount goes. The bolt that goes through there was snapped off inside. This pic shows the missing header bolt. John

Front header bolt could have fallen off, just take the other one off and run to a hardware store to match it up with a replacement bolt. |

better yet, get the factory nut (not bolt) -- it's got a seating area on it that will be difficult to find at a hardware store the missing mounting bolt could have broken in the field (i.e., after you took delivery) this is not intended as an insult -- more like be aware that there are other things that could have hppened other than the dealership messing up -- some HAVE been know to do that, however ;-} |

50 miles on yours? HA. Mine had 300, and yep, they called it NEW. |

Good excuse to become much more inimate with your bike, fondle the fine curves... Check it out all over with a light and mirror... Find out how it was put together, appreciate the engineering that went it, get to know it, your life depends on YOU mantaining it.... |

Yes for the most part I do all the work and maintenance on my vehicles. I can get along with the fact that the header bolt "vibrated" off but there is no way the bolt that holds the muffler mount bolt "vibrated" so hard that the bolt head snapped off and left the remaining portion of the bolt inside the mount. I didnt have the time to get it out so I paid to have it done. I just thought that was jacked up to buy a new bike and later find out this issue. Anyway enough of my whining. I just got back from a nice ride so I am in a good mood. John |

Just a question, but why would you change from the D&D to a factory race pipe? Just personal opinion, but the D&D has far better sound quality!! .02 But in any case, I agree with above, go over your ride with a fine tooth comb, aka mirror and flashlight, you will be surprised with what you will find and say "how did they do that?" more then once, we all can assure you. Keep looking, because when you find something on the surface, there does tend to be more beneath it! Bruce |

My guess would be that they were part of the same problem. Buell exhausts are NOT to be trifled with. On my Cyclone, a 50 cent rubber grommit caused me no end of pain. The vibration chewed through the ears of the grommit. Once the grommit was done, the metal to metal vibration elongated the hole. The excessive play caused one header stud nut to vibrate off. The excessive play there caused the other stud to then shear completely. That caused excessive operator weaping and swearing. The ultimate solution was the upgraded front exhaust mount. I expect you had one root cause of both failures. Fix the studs, put all the exhaust parts back on strictly by the book with factory parts and torques, and you should be solid. |

is no way the bolt that holds the muffler mount bolt "vibrated" so hard that the bolt head snapped off and left the remaining portion of the bolt inside the mount Want to bet? All someone had to do was either over tighten or not tighten the bolt enough. Over tight and the vibration causes the bolt to stretch to its breaking point. Under tight and it causes a stress point as the exhaust shifts around from vibration. Since it was a swap job to start with, stock to race, I would venture that in the case of the exhaust bolt, it was rechecked after they put the race exhaust on and overtightened. |
