Yesterday, my bike died in traffic. Sitting at a red light, it just...died. I re-started it, it ran for a second, then died again. I could not get it to re-start--felt like it was out of gas (no, the fuel light had NOT come on). I had to push it to the side of the street. Embarrassing!

I checked the trip odo, and decided it might be out of gas--maybe the fuel light was inoperative. Pushed/rode it a ways towards the nearest gas station, then tried starting it again--it did! I filled it up, started it, and all was well.

What I noticed, though, was that when I went to start it, there was no whine from the fuel pump. No check engine light either, though, and the bike ran fine.

When I got home, I played around with it a bit, decided to do the easiest thing first, and disconnected the fuel pump. Bike would not start like this--behaved exactly like it had at that red light. After re-connecting the pump, though, the whine has returned! I hope that's all it is...

Now, a request for suggestions. I think I'm gonna put some di-electric grease in that connector--good idea or bad? Anything else I should check? Are there any other connectors I should be concerned about? Thanks...

Oh, and one other thing. Whenever I come to a hard stop (I like to practice panic stops every now and then), the bike stalls. It takes a few seconds before it'll run again. Would this be fuel pump related as well, or something else? Is it just an XB thing, or a condition I should be able to correct?

Perhaps your bank angle sensor is messed up?
Also, my 2000 X1 had a kickstand switch that died at about 30,000 miles. That made the bike not run in a simmilar way.
Check the easy/cheap stuff first.

Natex has the right idea. Sometimes you can get to focused on what you think is the problem when there is in fact something else (usually easier to fix) wrong. Good luck.

hmmmmm..... i would check to see that the fuses and relays are well seated, and corrosion free.
the bank angle sensor is a long shot, but you could always unfasten it and swing it around a bit at an idle and see if it does consistently stop the engine at a given inclination.
give the whole wire harness a good close visual inspection, and a very thorough wiggle test, with engine idling.

Yeah, gotta like the wiggle test. Sometimes things come unstuck. Maybe more so on a bike that vibrates like a chihuahua in a tigers cage.
