ok people.... got a tough one for ya.

Last fall when i put the x-1 away for the winter, the left turn signal went out (prolly around 1 month before putting her away). I checked the bulbs, and nothign wrong there.

Well i got to work on it this past weekend (sick of using hand signals). I took the switch apart, nothing unusual there, replaced the relay, NADA. I mean the thing doesnt' even come on at all. Could the switch on the bars be bad? come on people little help here.

Just to clarify, when i use right signal, everything works dandy. Left nothing happens, not one turns on, no click from relay, NADA. replaced relay, checked bulbs, and checked switch...(could be broke but not to sure how to test it). if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

sounds liek the witch to me -- try reversing the left and right turn sign wires at one end, and see if the working sig switches

The power goes to the flasher relay, through it to the switch, from the switch to the respective lamp it is switched to, and the other side of the lamp is at ground. Therefore since it works on one side, the problem is from the switch to the left lamps (as neither the front or the rear works, it's not a ground side problem, as the front and rear have different grounds). Depending on the flasher, sometimes one open lamp (ie rear) can cause the other not to flash (front).
Check the wiring harness where it goes by the left side of the steering stem - it can rub through on the (S3?) fairing mount on an X1.

Also the soldering job on some aftermarket lights isn't up to twin/single vibration and may have come loose at the light.

As long as we are diagnosing turn signal problems ...

I just washed my M2 and the turn signals wouldn't flash for the next hour. They would come on but not blink. I assume I got water in the flasher. Is this unusual? Do I need a new flasher?

Not unusual, the flasher relay is not sealed. 99X1s have the flasher mounted under the tail section (after 2000 they moved it up near the oil tank), and it doesn't work even in a light rain. (esp if the rear hugger is missing). Some have sealed it with silicone or similar.

I experienced the same thing. The problem was a frayed wire as it passes through the bodywork into the turn signal stalk. Look there and at other rub points.

My problem with the turn signals is that the plastic stalks keep breaking.
