So about once every five times or so, when I chirp the horn to get somebody's attention the engine stutters and looses power. I thought it was me the first few times, but I'm beginning to wonder....

Any thoughts? I started to look at wiring harnesses and their usual chaffing points, like under the seat, etc. But nothing so far.

You guys crack me up.
Seriously, you obviously have a short somewhere. I'd start at the horn end, since you know that is part of the problem, and follow it as far as possible. Use a circuit tester at the fuse block end while the engine is running to see if the circuit is interrupted. It may be as simple as a crossed, frayed wire, or stripped insulation. Did you bike get wet recently?

Sounds like the horn might might be pulling a little too much current. It must be quite loud.

Well....

The horn is only loud because I still have the stock exhaust, a condition I'm going to rectify this week!!! Riding in the group from Edison HD this weekend to see Erik people were waiting for me to fire my bike up while it was running. Embarrassing.

So, I have pretty much every piece of test equipment I need for this and a degree to fool employers into thinking I know what to do with them. Only thing I think I really need is a schematic. Are they in the service manual?

I'm thinking current draw is dropping voltage somewhere else, like to the coils or something...

I have the same problem. I was at a biker protest last Saturday and this involved a lot of noise making. Everytime I hit the horn for any length of time the engine cut out.....it's NOT loud in fact it's pathetic. Before anyone suggests it...no one could hear me giving them the finger.

Why would anyone want to protest bikers?

cause bikers are BAD dudes that kill people and rob children of their precious toys and candy. Seriously, you could be the Merry Poppins of the motorcycle community and someone will find a reason to protest against you. "For Every Good There is 2 Bads in Someone Else's Mind."

Wasn't there a recall on some '04 bikes due to improper routing of the horn wires? something about the wires fraying and shorting out the ignition or something...help me out here, someone in the know.
