Yes. Check adjustment at 1000 miles and at 5000, 10000, etc.
The adjustment is simple.

needs checking more often than that until it beds in,then it will need looking after less,up to about 3500 miles it beds into the adjusting shoe so slackens off and needs adjusting.....hope that makes sence

I had to adjust mine at about 1000 miles. I"ve checked it at 7000 and 12,500 and it hasn't needed any more adjustment. It's easy to check...

I noticed my bike bucking and just not shifting too smoothly at around 7,500 mi. Read a while and found the section on primary adj. Man, the difference after proper adjustment was phenominal. Mine was really slack...

It's been 6000 miles ago that I adjusted. I check at every oil change and I was kinda surprised it's still good.

I adjusted mine today at 5,000 miles...first time, but I probably could have left it as is...bike was not jerking due to loose primary, but felt like it could be tightened just a tad...did not tighten much...did not want it too tight either. BTW, I have checked it each time I have changed the primary oil...just went ahead and tightened slightly today. Kinda felt guilty that I had not tightened it before, ha ha!

Yea, I forgot that. When it was cold and very low rpm it would be just a bit 'jerky' which I've heard is a symptom of a loose primary chain...

How do I know when it needs adjustment?
Does it feel like chain snap?

I check it at every oilchange, atleast just a quick check. When I plan the change of plugs I will check it properly at 3 different places on the chain. I have found that if it sounds like your bike is pinging on hard acceleration, but doesn't on a hard roll on(slow start of roll on quickening the throttle twist til WOT so its a smooth rise at first) I need to check the primary chain. Generally it just needs a small adjustment, 1/4 turn to 1/2 a turn keeps it in the 3/8ths play cold.

Wow, this board rocks, great timing for this thread...

I picked up my 12S from Dave over the weekend and thought the jerky-ness in first gear at low speed was just 'normal' for the Twin (it's my first) but after reading this thread I tightened up the primary chain a tad this afternoon and the jerky-ness is gone! I can now get it into neutral while stopped with engine running too. The slight ping (like Wycked mentioned) seems to still be there although a little better.

much better. Rode my roommates r6 today and got pretty upset with my sluggish trans on the buell. After finally adjusting the primary for the first time at 4.5k miles it feels like a new bike. I'm in love all over again.

Its about time for another adjustment on mine. 2.5k miles. I can notice the "jerky-ness" and the change in shiftine to neutral.

So just to confirm - check it for 3/8" play after taking out that little black plate on top part of transmission cover when cold? If adjustment is needed, just turn the nut (in front of the transmission oil drain plug)for adjustment? So counterclockwise is loosen?

Is it that easy?

Yes it's that's easy.
Just rotate the engine to move the primary chain a few times & check it at different spots. Where the chain is tightest is where you want to adjust your free play.
If the bike is cold: 3/8"-1/2" of play
If the bike is hot (normal operating temperature): 1/4"-3/8" of free play.

I prefer to check mine while hot. I try to be closer to 3/8" than 1/4".

You probably could reuse them but I didn't & wouldn't. I figure if I can finance a $10,000 bike, I can pony up the $ to replace the primary inspect cover every 5K miles & the clutch inspect cover every 3K miles. Besides it gives me peace of mind to replace them. I'm not so worried about oil seeping out as much as I am about such things as dust & water seeping in.
If memory serves, the service manual says to replace the gaskets with new ones.
