Picked up an '03 XB9R used and didn't get an owners manual with it so I have a couple questions. I have gotten an idiot light that I can't decide what it's for. The little picture inside looks like a V-twin engine and it's red. Is this a high temp light? The other question is about what looks like a fuel trip meter/odometer. How does that work and when/how does it reset. thanks guys, John |

The Fuel trip meter will reset itself. The two trip meters are reset by holding the left button down while they are activated. The "Engine light" is just that. Get it checked out. |

M1 - Don't you reset the trip meters by holding down the right reset button? |

The M button (Mode) cycles the display between total, trip 1, trip 2, and trip on reserve (F). The R button (reset?) resets trip 1 and 2. F cannot be reset and will reset automatically once you filled up or are back up from leaning too far in a corner . If you select time and hold the M and R together for a sec, then you can set the hours and minutes with the M and R buttons. If the engine light stays on after starting the bike you should definitely have that checked out by your dealer. I wouldn't even drive up there with that light, I would call 'em first. Now if you don't mind doing things yourself you can find your diagnostics plug, brigde pin 1 & 2, turn the key on, put the kill switch in "run" position (don't start the engine) and then the "check engine light" should start to flash a sequence. I don't have my manual with me, but if you want to know I can check it out when I get back home. What it comes down to is that the sequence equals an error code that you can look up, so then you know what is wrong. 11 for instance would be your TPS. |

THe light stays on for just a second or 2 when the motor is started, it doesn't come on at all after it goes out the first time. Where is the diagnostics plug, and which pins are 1 & 2? Are they marked on the plug? |

That is normal...my Neutral and "V-Twin" light stay on while starting and for maybe a second afterwards. If it is still on 30 seconds later while the bike is running then I would not ride it until you get the trouble codes and see what is going on. |

When you first turn on the bike and turn on the Run switch, you need to WAIT until the check engine light shuts off before actually starting the bike. If you don't then you are starting the bike while the FI is running its self diagnostic. The only lights that should still be lit when you start the bike is the Green N for nuetral and the Red oilcan for the oil pressure, engines not running so of course you don't have oilpressure. If the check engine light will not go out shortly after you hear the fuel pump prime the injectors, but before you start the bike, there is an issue and it will need to be checked by the digital technician. So starting procedure: step 1) Turn on key Step 2) Turn Run switch to ON/RUN* step 3) wait for check engine light to go out step 4) press starter until motor fires without giving it any gas *What? You turned the motor off with the key instead of the run switch? Not a good idea, As I understand it, When you turn it off by the kill switch it cuts the fuel pump just before the injector to release some of the pressure in the system. When you cut it at the key the sytem stays pressurized and when you turn the key on with the run switch still on, you get a pressure spike that can allow extra fuel into the cylinder fouling out the plug on start up. This was the exact same instructions and reasons I was given by the Kawasaki dealer and head mechanic when I had bought my ZX6-RR. |

I found out what the yellow light with the gas pump icon was. Noticed the f trip started counting from zero (in kilometers) Anyone remember how many miles or k you can go at this point? bake |

Bake, I wouldn't push it much passed 25 miles, or 40 kilometers. |

I think my fuel light is out. The other day while I was riding I noticed the fuel trip went on, but no idiot light. Are all the lights suposed to come on when you first turn the key on as a "check" ?? otherwise I'll go to the dealership and turn one of there's on and see. |

I have the engine light on now. It comes on just after starting and stays on. How do I bridge the diagnostics plug and find out what code is flashing? I want to at least try to take care of this before getting robbed by my dealer. |

So do I have this right....the F trip starts to count up from 0 after the low fuel light come on? Weird. If anyone can shed some light on how to short the diagnostic plug (and where it is) Blackxb9 and I would appreciate it. |

Guys the service manual explains all this and much, much more. It's definitely worth more than what they ask for it. Yes the F trip counts up from 0 when the low fuel light comes on. Different but makes a lot of sense when you think about it. The diagnostics plug is in different places by model and perhaps year too (I think anyway). On my 04 XB12R it's under the headlamps. Don't know about the S models. There are a lot of error codes and some things that turn on the light but won't store a code. If your light comes on and stays on you still have an ongoing problem. There's a lot of this info here in the KV too. |

Bake, I wouldn't push it much passed 25 miles, or 40 kilometers. If I don't push it 40 km's after that yellow light came on I won't get anywhere . After 25 km's I get nervous ... |

I have a manual, but it is for the 03R and I have an 03S. I have a code sheet so I know what the code # is if I could just get it to flash and show me the codes. If anybody knows how to do this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. |
