Its hapening way too often and our sport is going to suffer beacuse of it. Just remember what happened to muscle cars in the early 70s.

Doesn't take many CC's to lose it with a bald rear tire in a turn. That is where the riders judgment should override testosterone.

Also, don't overlook the possibility of oil, anti freeze, sand or whatever on the roadway which could have contributed to the Fatal Whoops.

BuellieDan...Concerning the Muscle Cars, I thought it was fuel economy, OPEC, Japanese imports (read: our lack of technology) and the EPA that killed them. I always assumed it was the insurance rates that made the high risk folks go away. Did I miss something???

Here in OK a guy was on the interstate on a HD and a barrel fell off a truck and hit him, he is now in a coma. Any time I get behind a truck now with a bunch of junk in the back I'll pass them. If a cop pulls me over I will be more than happy to tell him that I feel speeding to avoid the possibility of an accident is in my best interest.

The EPA mandates for lower emissions contributed but it was the <a href="http://go-advertising.com?go=insurance" onmouseover="window.status = 'goto: insurance';return 1" onmouseout="window.status=''">insurance</a> companies that killed the muscle cars in the 70s not the price of gas. They started blacklisting cars that had too much power. How long before nobody can afford to insure an R1 if this keeps going on?

Every summer on Long Island I read about a few deaths of motorcyclists. I remember a year where it was young guys 20-24 years old in separate incidents, middle of the night and they lost control and hit somethin and they all ride what they think is "cool", a ridiculous crotch rocket that is meant for the track. Unfortunatley for the masses, the new riders definately hop on bikes with little experience. RESPECT for what it is you are doing is KEY. On the other hand, you could be the best and get "taken out" by some idiot switching lanes without signaling.

Buellidan...Hmmm...with the exception of the "Too many Tickets and a 502" crowd I don't recall any of us paying unfair insurance rates in the 60's and 70's either in Wisconsin or California. The Vette's were the worst to insure due to theft and the high cost of repairing the fiberglass body, but the rest were fairly decent.

What us old farts remember most was the introduction of the 1974 American cars where the push was to go smaller and get better fuel economy thanks to OPEC and a few other factors. With few exceptions, the engines were anemic and both the styling and quality was nauseating. That was when the imports from both Europe and Japan really started to steal the market from the Big 4.

I guess what I am trying to say is that insurance wasn't a problem for those of us that didn't get caught in the 60's and 70's. Sure we paid a little more for a muscle car, but not a lot more. However, times have changed and the insurance industry is doing more profiling and premium discrimination these days based on both the driver's record and the vehicle.

Concerning motorcycles, I wish that, in addition to the rider's record, the insurance rates were based on Horsepower rather than CC's. Lot's of folks being charged over the nose for large CC's and no performance. Liter bikes, Buell type bikes, Cruisers and Sport Tourers all in the same category makes no sense to me.

Additionally, I would like to see the insurance companies base their rates on the insured's DMV record for the type of vehicle. In essence, separate automobile offenses from motorcycle offenses. Heck they already get the info when they pull your DMV record so the extra step could be easily taken if they wished to.

The rationale is that many have great driving records and rotten riding records or vice versa. So why should your motorcycle insurance go up if you are a safe and sane rider but a "Ticket Magnet" when you drive a four wheeler?

I wish I could just be "insured as a person" to drive whatever of my vehicles I am driving/riding, rather than carrying a seperate policy on each one...

Heck, when I went to Geico to get insurance for my bike, they said they wouldn't insure it until a tinted window and loud exhaust violation on my car fell off my record (about 2 months). Made no sense. What the heck should non-moving violations on my car have to do with insuring my bike. Oh well, took my business to Dairyland.

what the hell is it with florida, i swear i hear about more moto deaths over there than any were else. do you guys just have a huge BIKE/Capita ratio or what.
as far as the guy in the bike.....if you cant afford new tires why would you think you could afford the hospital bill if you did survive a crash.

I really don't like reading that sort of article. The writer or police "appears" not to know much about tires. My tires "appeared" to bald when they were new.

No matter who, what was at fault the kid is gone may he rest in peace.
