Is there any drain plug to the block? There is a allen head plug but looks like you have to drop muffler to access it,

You shouldn't need one, even though there was on on the 'tubers and may be on the XB's. Just run the engine before draining the oil, then shut the bike off and drain the oil tank/swingarm and replace the filter. There won't be enough oil left in the system to worry much about.

I'm curious myself as to how much oil is left in the sumps after an oil change.

If you warm it up and drain it right away there should be very little left. Its when it sits a day or so that some might make its way back in the crankcase. Then again you shouldn't change oil on a cold motor!

Just changed my oil earlier this week, both engine and trans. As Buellman indicates it is best to change the oil when it is hot. The engine took 2qts 17oz, the trans 1 qt. Keep in mind the manual recommends 4oz of oil be put in the filter prior to putting it on and the 4oz is included in 2qts 17oz. I have found that a long funnel similar to one used to put oil in a car transmission works well to get the oil in the swingarm easily.

Its good walt mentioned this, always put oil in verticle oil filters when you change them. Its hard to put oil in horizontal filters!

Starting the bike with no oil in the filter is not good practice.

Are we really sure about how much drains? To me, there will be a substatial amount of oil left over in the cooler/lines/pump etc. I'm just curious how much. If I'm doubting you and am incorrect in doing so, please correct me. It just seems to me that if I were to take off my oil pump after draining the swingarm hot and the filter of course, there would be ALOT of oil being gravity fed out of those lines to the cooler not to mention the few ounces left over in the pump itself. I just have a hard time believing that the 'entire' system is evacuated during an oil change.

The entire system is not evacuated during an oil change, but most of it is.

If you change your oil on a regular basis then it isn't enough to worry about. If someone dumps some solvent accidently into your oil then you may want to flush the system out, or do a few short-cycle oil changes. The only way you're going to fully drain a system is to dismantle it, and I don't think you want to really be doing that very often.

YMMV.
