After riding home about 15 miles, I noticed some oil leaking from the primary chain cover. What could this come from? Overfilled? Normal? Bolts not tightened? Background: 2005 XB9SX with about 700 miles. I haven't noticed this problem before. Next, will it hurt to drive it with this slight leak until the 1,000 mile check?

Normal. Wash more often. If weeps enough to drip you might replace the "o" ring around the inspection cover. My wife's Blast does that around practically every gasket. |

That has to be a bad gasket or possibly a cross threaded screw that did not reach the correct clamping force. I would get a new gasket, pop the cover and take a look. If all looks OK, install the new gasket, torque the bolts and it will probably be fine. |

no gasket behind the primary chain adjuster cover? loose cover allowing oil past?...or a porous casting cover perhaps???? |

I agree with wash more often! Mine has done that since I have owned it, and never has done it enough to drip. Typical Harley motor. If it stops leaking there, STOP riding immediately because it is out of oil! |

Replace the gasket to the primary chain inspection cover. If it continues it could be coming from the shifter opening there. |

The shaft seal is blown. It is about 2$ an you have to remove the primary to install. You may also want to put a layer of masking tape on the shifter shaft splines to keep it from tearing up that seal again. |

I agree. Looks like the shaft seal. Have replaced a couple at the shop. Its an easy fix. |

Looks more oily up top around the primary inspection cover. I'd replace that gasket first then try spidermans if your not cured by then. Now is anybody up for a pint of your preferred brand of wobbly-pop?

Take it to the dealer and ask them to repair it under warrenty. When you do so, ask them if they have those gaskets and seal already in stock. If they don't ask them to order them so that you can keep riding to cut down on your downtime, and you will bring the bike back when they arrive. To be done properly they will end up replacing all 3 gaskets and the shift shaft seal |

Actually Spidey, you only need to remove the primary cover. Just thought I'd chime in before you give the poor guy a heart attack. |

Shifter shaft seal should be the same part number as the pre 2004 Sportsters (i.e. dealer will have it in stock). Instead of tape, buy the matching Sportster rubber o-ringy thing (name escapes me) that sits on top of the shifter shaft seal (Buell doesn't have stock). Should run under $5 if you are not inclined to hand you bike over to your dealer for any length of time. |

Notice the clutch inspection cover looks the same way? Didn't show up nearly as much on the raw motors. |

Mine has done it since I bought it too. I just wash mine every week anyway so it never bothered me. If it starts dripping, I'll worry. |

Ingemar is right; there is oil around the clutch cover as well. I didn't capture it in the picture because I didn't notice it at first. |

Manual says new gaskets are required each time the clutch cover and inspection cover is removed. Have your's been off? Mine weep if I don't use a new gasket. Likewise on my 1200R. I think the gaskets are designed to crush once. |

I reused the one in my cyclone about a million times and it never leaked. Reused the ones on the 9sx once so far and no problem. Did you wash everything down really well to see if it comes back? It would be easy to pop off those covers and make sure the o-ring like gaskets in there are not pinched also. |

Yeah. There's a market niche. Aftermarket people take note. Design a decent reusable gasket that isn't prone to leaks for that cover and I'd buy one in a heartbeat. |

Sorry for a late post, but i have had the same problem and when I went to buy new a new gasket i was informed that Buell has revised both the inspection cover and gasket and the clutch cover and gasket. Should solve the problem |
