I asked this question a while back. What it would take to get a Buell up to 160 mph? I boiled down to more money than I was willing to spend. If I want that type of speed, the '05 R1 would be the bike to get. I just love my Xb12r so much that I'm not willing to convert. What's funny is. All my in line friends brag about how fast they can go, but given road conditions, traffic, curves and all other environmental factors. I have no problems keeping up with them. As a matter of fact they are like wow your here and I'm like yeah I am. I think the XB has some respect among my friends.Track day is track day.. if I'm going to get into racing hardcore.. my bike of choice may not be the Buell... but for everyday riding on the streets... I'm more than happy.

Start by reading some of the areas about our TEAM ELVES racing at Bonneville.

You will see that Aaron Wilson, with his M-2 pit bike, broke the long standing Carl's Speed Shop record, logging something like 167 mph on his pit bike.

The fastest a STOCK XB will go is about 145 and that's under ideal conditions. There are few states you'll be able to use this speed on public roads....I've tried in 44 of them on Buells.

The 160 target is a "doable deal". Best bet, find the sponsor banner for Aaron Wilson or Wes Brown and give them a jingle. Either can make your bike go 160MPH and save you lots of wasted $$$ experimenting.

Feel free to join us at Bonneville this year and take a shot at the "150 Club". You'll note that about 50% of the 130 and 150 club at the Bonneville Salt Flats are TEAM ELVES folks on their own and loaned bikes. In past years, Aaron has been kind enough to provide a "pit bike" that some have used. You could start building now and be ready in September.

Give ya a good chance to meet Buellers from several differnet countries as well.

There is no way a stock XB is going to go 145 mph. The fastest my XB12 would go is 120 to 125 on the street and it took forever to reach that speed. Maybe on a salt flat with full bodywork and 3 mile run in things would be different..

Maybe the ideal condition is a hurricane behind you while your going downhill.

I have a xb12r with race kit and air box mods done at the time etc.... and reached those speeds(230 klms) going up hill packing double ...perhaps you got a slow 12

I have one, and I'll be setting it to my bike when I do my twelve race ECM. It'll be a while before I get around to firing it up with the nine ECM on a Dyno though...

I'm not interested so much in the 700RPM's though, I'm more interested in the lean fuel delivery and the ability to tune it properly with the TFI. I dyno'd my 12 w/ Force pipe and stock ECM the other day. I ended up with these settings on the TFI...

Off, Off, Off, 7:30-45.

It still runs rich everywhere but 4K-5K, and between 2K and 2750 it runs VERY rich (about 10.5-11:1).

That is an inaccurate statement.

Paul Rogers just rode one, in P-PP, to 146 mph at Lake Gardiner in Australia.

The ONLY change was the soft limiter function was abated.

Body work and bike were bone stock.

Pardon my giggle....but I was hosting the fellows from BIKE magazine in England one day out in the middle of the desert on the UT/NV border. Not wanting to see what they were going to do to the poor X-1 I'd given them for the afternoon, I set out to "get lost" for an hour while they did photos. I found a was about 7 miles of straight as a string slight downhill grade that defined the border. That was the day I found the limits of the S3. I suppose a hurricane would have helped, but I enjoyed it. IF it matters, we'd been in Hurricane, UT the day before.

136 mph @ VIR on the north course front straight on an '03 Lightning Low with minimal mods(Drummer,Pro Series ECM & air filter, and XB12 air box lid). Hard on the arms though with so little wind protection

My understanding is that the 9 box won't work on the 12 and may even cause damage.(and I don't just mean to the pistons!)

do not use the 9 ecm on the 12.....the extra rev ceiling will kill the motor very quickly,matt at trojan who has raced an xb with a lot of sucess told me this when i was thinking of upping the bikes capacity by dropping a 12 crank assembly into my 9....i would have to also install the 12 ecm

Had my 04-12R up to 135 and it still had plenty
room for more. It's not like my prior bikes,
they would get there in a blink. But who cares about the high speed on the street.
Not me, the tracks the place to do that
NO CARS!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, and the ambulance is
already there.

mine hits the rev limiter in 5th gear and the speedo shows 225km/h i don't know if i've slow speedo unit or not?the manual says 235km/h topspeed! Its a 12R with race ecm/KN filter drummer and opend airbox.

I can only hypothesize about a 9 ECM in a 12, but with the difference in displacement being stroke as opposed to bore, you're looking at a very confused bike with crank and cam timing readings like that. If these were both stock bikes, the interactive exhaust would be useless on the 12. Keep in mind that '05 ECMs are now re-flashable like the H-D/Delphi systems, which may hint that a Buell/VDO race tuner may be on the horizon.
