Ok, i received an offer for my 9R of 7000. my only gripe is that the 12 has more power meaning I don't have the best model, ya know? My bike has almost 10k on it no mods. can my 9 be as fast or faster than the 12 for less than it'll cost to upgrade also its already got like 10k on it already. so is the 12 worth it? all info would be much appreciated...by the way i am at naval station san diego so any dealers out there wanna hook up an army guy or any riding buddies out there give me a reply too all info is cool..

The better question is "what is my riding style like?" The 9 and 12 are two different animals. If its mostly around town and midrange stuff then the 12 is better, but for highspeed riding the 9 is better. The 9 is more forgiving in the rev range upper end then the 12 which for many equates to a more fun ride. Me I learned to adapt to the revlimiter on the 12 hitting early so it doesn't bother me. The 9 isn't really all that much "slower" then the 12 either. It can easily be made up for in riding skill in the corners.

I'd go for another 9, or keep yours, and add a few performance mods(ie-12 airbox, better can, or race kit.) You'll also save some cash for insurance with the 9. Most insurance companies rate motors over 1000cc substantially higher.

Wycked, can you expound on the virtues of the 9R top end?}

If someone is honestly offering you 7k for a used 9R w/10,000 plus miles on it. TAKE IT! Use can use that to buy a new 9 or a 12. That is a generous offer. You do mean US dollars, right?

7000 us is the offer yes however I wouldn't think of 9500 as alot of miles. the cost of a new 9 is still 3000 more than sale price, I'm sure that would build a hell of a motor. As for the 2nd part of my post how can i gain 11hp and 14 ft-lbs over stock.. Am I wrong to assume that a new bike would be wasteful in lieu of building the current one?..what upgades work best together?

If all you're worried about is
my 9 motor put up bigger numbers than the 12
Then get the 12.

The 9 will never make the power of a 12, unless you throw thousands of dollars at it. Unless of course you got a workshop, can bore your cases and assemble a 1200cc bigbore kit with stage 3 heads yourself. Then you only pay for the kit, but that's still 2000+ bucks.

I will probably never get a 12 for the simple reason that, like Wycked said, the nine is revvier which equates to "fun" to me. But the 12 is definitely faster.

Here is my .02¢
$7,000 is a very good offer for your bike. My policy after owning 25+ bikes is this: take any good offer for any bike:-). There is always the next one:-).
Now you got the $7K, what to do?
1. Test ride a 12. If you like it, buy a left over for $8k or so.You will not be able to make your 9 as fast as a 12 for $1,000.
2. If you don't like the 12, buy a 2003 used 9 for about $5000 or so, take it apart, knock yourself out, buy a big bore kit and what ever else you can afford. If you are a good mechanic, if you put $3000 worth of parts on a 9 you should have a very righteous scooter, for sure.
Confused?
I am too:-)

To me the whole Buell experience is in the handling. On the street a great handling, light bike with anything more than 70 or so HP is overkill. The short powerful rev limit of the XB makes it the perfect street bike. If you want power look to 1000cc inline JAP 4's, they are the best bang for the buck.

focus on performance and fun, rather than numbers -- numbers alone do not tell a story at all . . . .. . it's all about how you ride, where you ride, and what you want to achieve while riding, and numbers, by themselves, don't address those issues completely

7K is a great offer for your scoot (have you looked at the used market? full of bikes, and good ones, too) . . . . me, I'd build up what I've got -- intake, exhaust, mebbe cams, and go for a package that has been proven to work together -- upgrade the system, not parts

I purchased my 03 XB9S with the race kit installed for delivery, so I can't compare to stock, but like I said before the bike rocks on the street. I spent many weeks sorting out the suspension!! That made the biggest difference in handling!!

A larger motorcycle friend of mine once told me the cheapest performance improvement he could do to make his bike go faster was if he lost 100 lbs.

For the 9 performance you'll be happy with something like: K&N filter, 12r airbox, race pipe, race ECM. There are variations that you can go with for different costs but look at those mods and you should be
