I don't currently own a buell but have been interested for quite a while. I looked at a second hand XB9R today and took it for a quick spin... wow! This is definitely The bike for me! There are a couple of questions I'd like to ask tho:

1. At idle there was a very loud whir from the motor - i put it down to the fuel pump (I think). Is this a normal noise? It seemed to quieten as the bike warmed up, but it may have been me getting used to it?

and 2. There was a pretty serious shudder from the front brake that definitely lessened once the brakes were warm. Is that normal or easily repairable?

The guy could not tell me a reason for the bike to be sold (dealer didn't know). Just wondering if these were serious faults or the norm?

Any help appreciated =o)

thanx heaps
-Ian-

Ian, I bought my XB9R when it was 12 months old and 7,000 klick on the clock, yes the fuel pump is noisy on mine, I have a race ECM, K&N filter and race pipe on mine, which drowns out the fuel pump when I get moving, when I stop I can hear it again, after another 5,000 klicks I figure the fuel pump is OK,
The shudder in the brake rotor is not normal, That needs to be fixed, do a search on badweb for brake shudder, there is a shipload of info on front brake shudder to read.
Hope that helps.

Even brand new the fuel pump makes a racket, no worries there. Braking oughta be smooth as silk though, thats either a rotor issue or a bent rim.

Whiring noise is normal-fuel pump. The frontend shudder can be caused by several sources, but with what you've described, it sounds as though the "floaters" need to be cleaned. Look at the attaching hardware for the rotor, it floats on those bolts and there are isolator pads between the rotor and the wheel. That area will will begin to collect dirt and junk and will cause the rotor to behave as though it's warped. Your saying it lessens as you go is a clue.

Everything sounds pretty normal, Reep is right about the brakes. They're great bikes, and loads of fun. Get one and let the madness begin. By the way, nice job on the fjords.

If I'm not mistaken, Trojan has the wave rotor available for less than the stock replacement and it's sexy! Just buy a new wave rotor from them and USE NEW MOUNTING HARDWARE, get some new pads, and chalk it up to peace of mind.

I'm about to do my brakes with 13,000 miles so it sounds about right that they might need attention. Buy it and ride the shiznit out of it. Grins will abound!

A loud exhaust will solve the fuel pump noiseWelcome.

Isn't the wave around $300+. Is the stock rotor that much?

As I recall... The stock rotor is more than twice that... I could be way off though. Maybe I'm remembering it in Pounds sterling or something : ). Maybe even yen...

The Fuel pump will be a good deal quieter when the tank is full as well.

OK so I was mistaken. Same advice, but use stock rotor Point is, new parts make for good piece of mind if you can afford em.

You are buying it from a dealer, 2nd hand? What kind of dealer? If it is a HD/Buell dealer, get them to fix the front rotor issue.

Is the rotor issue possibly just a simple tightening of the head bearing nut?

My bike had some sort of a "shudder" that I thought felt like the brake which turned out to be loose steering head bearings...an easy fix if that's what you're feeling.

The ole Fuel pump...
Yes it's normal, but it's less obvious when you have a full tank, seems to do it more when the tank gets low.
Brakes, well on mine when it's wet I hear a clicking, they say this is normal.
Today is the first wet day in weeks, the roads are greasy, I can feel the bike sliding about.
