when i talked to my HD/Buell dealership about getting the 12 airbox for my xb9r that is what they said. running lean basically means not enough gas for the O2 right? i'm not certain what is meant by that. i know lots/everyone has done this mod. does the dealership have a real concern here? or are they just uninformed? i have done the buell race kit but no other mods.

i did search the site. and i found a lot of info on doing the airbox. but i didn't see much on this sort of question. sorry if this has already been covered.

I haven't seen/heard anything on this site or any other that would make me think it was a concern...I have the same setup as you, race kit and cut 12 airbox on a 9, and I have had no trouble with it.

The Buell tech at my dealership has seen my setup and had no concerns about it either

It won't even run lean... Run the bike at a steady 3500 RPM's for 5-10 minutes. The ECM will adjust the AFV (Adaptive Fuel Value) so that the AF ratio is back to what the ECM likes to see.

This points to a lack of understanding of the Buell closed loop EFI system by the dealership.

And as I recall... the ECM is the same.

If it is running a little lean the O2 sensor would sense the O2 and the FI would adjust the mixture.

Does anyone know how much the FI can adjust the mixture?

I have the stock ECM on my 03' XB9R and added the 12R airbox and removed the snorkel. I noticed a little performance boost but nothing problems along the lines of running lean, knocking, or cutting out.

Removing the snorkel and adding the 12 airbox cover brings nothing but goodness. Runs a little louder & prouder. And smoother - feels less like lugging in the lower rpm's. Enjoy.

Do it Taxman!

Put that 12 Airbox on with that race kit! If Northwoods won't order it for you, Daves will.

Isn't this board great!

Nope, the CityCross and 05XB9R have a different ECM from the 03XB9 and 04XB9.

Or, instead of converting to the XB12 airbox, do it one better and put one of these on instead:

airfilter lid

Available here. I had it molded in fiberglass from a mold made from the XB12 cover to get the same inverted nipple, but extended the flanges the whole way around to get a better seal. Comes with all the mounting HW, no holes need to be drilled in your lower airbox cover. It also re-routes the breathers, which should be good for a pony or two, and keeps the oil from gunking up your airbox and throttle body.

The usual caveats apply, tampering with your airbox on a street legal vehicle is a violation of USEPA laws, substantial penalties exist, yadda yadda yadda.

I have a stock 9sx ecm I will sell if that would help someone. Dyno of Stock 9sx versus Race 9sx ECM's show only about 1.5 horse different at peak.
