Is there anything special that needs to be done to remove the primary cover?

Only trouble I recall is breaking off a seized bolt on the shifter linkage. Pretty simple really. Check your chain shoe while you're in there. Mine was barely out of specs at 12,000 miles. They are about $24.

But basically you just remove the clutch cable after draining the primary and then just remove the cover?

I just replaced mine....You DON'T break off anything. It is quite simple unless you are planing on replacing the entire unit. If you will be replacing it, the clutch cable is unscrewed from the case...It's a pain in the pie hole. Other wise make sure you have a new gasket and a torque wrench with inch pounds and follow the guide for the torquing order.

Four 4 - 6" bolts of the same size as the primary cover bolts (1/4"??) will make it much easier to get the cover back on:

Slip the first bolt through one of the top right holes in the cover and slip the (new) gasket on the bolt as well. Screw the long bolt into the appropriate hole in the inner primary. Do the same with the next long bolt through a bolt hole in the top left of the primary. Add the last 2 bolts along the bottom of the primary. Now everything, including the gasket is lined up, and can be gently slid into place while you have your hands free to deal with the primary chain/shoe. Install the "real" primary bolts in the open holes and replace the long bolts as you get to them.

Some have mentioned cutting the heads off the long bolts, so you can install the bolts into the inner primary first and then slide the gasket and then the cover on. Others have done the same using wooden dowels.

Just to clarify: Breaking a bolt was not intentional. A bolt on the shifter linkage was seized, I broke it, and had to drill it out, complicating the otherwise straight forward primary cover removal. : )

A length of wooden dowel small enough to fit through the primary cover holes completely, chopped into 3" sections, each sharpened on both ends with a pencil sharpener, are hard to beat.

That being said, once I started using the rigid metal sandwich gaskets instead of the paper ones, I rarely bothered with the dowels anymore, the metal was pretty easy to handle.

The paper is a PITA, and very easy to get a corner folded over or out of line by the time it is all together... which wont start leaking until you get about 50 miles from home.
