Some of ya'll might hate cops, but I for one have met a couple bad ones and a couple REALLY cool ones. I've got a pretty nifty story about a cool cop and rather than tell you about it some other time I'll just make things easier on us and tell ya now...
Me and my buddy Jason were up late studying for finals while we were in college (winter 2002). We were both brain dead so we decided to take a break. He has a 1987 Buick Grand National (Turbo V-6 with 700+ hp at the rear wheels), and he had just bought some new street slicks for it. He was really interested in seeing how well they griped the road....
SO at about midnight, we head out to Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, MD (just a few miles outside of DC for the folks who don't know). Georgia ave is about a 6 lane divided median road, speed limit 35mph.
Jason right from a side street, looks left, sees a few cars a ways a way so he nails it and pulls out on Georgia Ave.
He crosses all the way over to the fast lane with the tires smokin like nutz and the car fishtailing, they finally hook and a couple seconds later we were rocketing down the street at about 90mph...when all of sudden Jason looks in the rear view mirror and see the blue & red lights...He says "Oh $hit!" and we pull over.
Young 30's cop walks up, "license & reg." standard routine...goes away comes back for "The Chat."
At this point we figure we'd had it. Cars getting impounded, we're going to jail...blah blah blah...
Cop says "You guys been drinking?"
Stereo-> "No sir." (we had been drinking coffee...)
Cop-"You guys have any guns or drugs in your car?"
Jason turns and looks at me-I look at him...
Stereo-> "No sir."
Cop-"You mind if we search the car?"
Stereo-> "No sir-go right ahead if you like, we aren't carrying anything illegal."
Cop-"Are you sure we can search the car?"
Stereo-> "Uhh, yes sir that's fine."
Cop-"Cause we're really looking for drugs and guns tonight. You sure you don't have any?"
Stereo-> "No sir, no drugs or guns."
Cop-"Okay that's cool. What kinda car is this? Looks brand new!"
Jason-"It's a 1987 Buick Grand National. It had 27k miles on it when I bought it last year, I've got 35k on it now."
Cop-"Nice! I've got a mustang myself, it's not as fast as this beast! Anyway, nice car man you guys can go-but light 'em up for me when you pull out!"
Stereo-> "WHAT?!"
Cop-"I'll tell you when the traffic is clear, when it is hit it and smoke the $hit outta those tires!"
Jason and I look at each other like WTF?!?!?!?!
Cop waves us to go and he power brakes it then off we go! 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 mph back down Georgia again...
HA! That cop was TOO f'in cool!!!

In the March issue of Performance Bikes, one of the writers goes to California to hang out with like minded speed freaks. He's been given loan of a Ducati 749 Dark.
He wheelies it once on an empty road and the next thing he knows there's a CHP motorbike cop pulling him over. Cop pulls his pistol and while "crouching behind his motorcycle" orders him to step away from the bike.
Before it's all over, the writer is handcuffed and made to lay on the ground while the cop searches his belongings.
After finding his passport and other ID the cop tells the writer it's his lucky day. He's not going to give him a ticket but he is going to impound his bike. What a tool.

Speaking of COPS, those of you who are coming to Daytona this week beware: Volusia county Florida has so many tickets written each month the local paper just had an article in it about which departments wrote the most. I'm surprised the American Automobile Association doesn't circle Volusia county as a speed trap like the little towns in Georgia in the 60s. When every police vehicle is equipped with radar and there is little or no crime, you can easily guess what the cops are doing (outside of wasting taxpayers dollars). Beware, that car on the side of the road isn't broken down, that motorcycle over on the side isn't waiting for his buddy.............

Question:
Is it legal for The Law to pull over 15 bikes at a time? I understand if the entire group is speeding, but if one bike has a visible infraction?
What would The Law do if not all of the bikes pulled over? What if the bikes pulled over with 100 yards between each of them? |

Yep, they can pull over a group, & if some "evade" the Motorola gets used, & jail can result.
If you pull over spaced out, you make the nice policeman mad. Backup will be called, and it's entirely possible that the cop will have everyone's keys in a pocket by the time he gets to the front of the strung out pack. A simple speed tax event will become a long drawn out nightmare of nit picking equipment violations, and even, in the case of a real jerk who's had a bad day already, ( before YOU decided to screw with him ) a few bikes might "fall off" the stands and get damaged.

and watch out for the construction zones.have become a top hiding place here lately.and to clear up something,one car could not pull over 15 bikes.that would take a coordinated effort with 2-3 other cars.and always remember this-law enforcement can only do as much as you let them without probable cause.one person in a group of 15 with a violation does not probable cause make for the other 14. |

I've seen both the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!
Sometimes I've been lucky and they were cool.
Most often I wasn't so lucky and they were not even civil.
I pulled a wheelie on an xr250 years ago, no traffic, no one on my side of the road, second gear hit third and drop. Cop pulls in from side street and red-lights me. So I pull around the corner to a quiet street and immediately pull to the curb. The guy slides around the corner and almost kills me. So he writes me up for reckless driving and says if I say a word I am going to jail. What a fricken jerk!
On the other hand I have gotten a few breaks in my day when I could have gotten much worse.
It just depends on the individual.

I'm asking a legitimate question Aesquire.
Does anyone have a link to any states specific statute allowing an officer to pull over a group of bikes (or cars)?
As far as everyone not pulling over, let me clarify with an example situation: I'm riding with a group of bikes, one in the group pulls a wheelie in front of the Law. Pursuit ensues. Should I pull over, or just let the wheelie guy? |

Chain, in general, if the officer has 'lit up' and is after a single offender.. You’re only required to 'give way' so he may pass you safely. You are not required to stop, unless the officer orders you to the curb. (your state regs may vary)
Of course, you may want to stay as a group, depending on what the occasion is. After all, if you’re going to try and fight an unjust or wrongful prosecution, if it's your word against a sworn LEO, you will loose. If on the other hand, say half a dozen Buelligans walk into court and all tell the nice judge how the officer was unfortunately mistaken, you have a better chance of beating the charge. Especially if you are in the right. Too many people just pay the bill move on.
As always, be polite, be truthful and don't get an attitude, you never know what the officers day has been like.. Trust me on that one.

"polite, be truthful and don't get an attitude, " usually can get you out of a ticket. My last incident came when I blew through a speed trap on the way to Ocean City MD. I saw the officer running to his car to catch me while his buddies laughed at him. After realizing he's after ME, I simply pulled over and waited for him. Cop could not believe I actually pulled over, thought for sure I would run. Told him we're not all menaces to society! I was on a straight clear patch of road and enjoying a "short" burst of speed. Let me off with a warning and a "HEY, nice bike" |

Sorry Chainsaw, I am not sure of NY law on group pull over's.
I read your post & just flashed on the mental picture of a dozen bikes pulled over, over a 300 yard stretch of road, and I channeled every trooper I've given free donuts & coffee to. ( I had for a few years the most dangerous job in America. Night clerk in a 7-11. No cop pays. Free coffee is how you keep an active, cheap security staff... ) |

Well, I figured I get an answer from someone in the know, my cousin is a former sheriff and current Federal LEO. His answer
Excellent question, I'll answer it two ways i.e. your case (wheelie guy) and the other a group of bikes speeding. First your case, obviously your friend is who the Officer wanted to talk too. All of you stopping could possibly make the Officer get more defensive (Officer Safety) a lot of Bikers to just him and he'll want you all just to go down the road a ways to wait from your friend. Hopefully, that makes sense in type be easier to explain over the phone or in person.
Next is the group of bikes speeding, this one is different. Obviously they are all speeding and the Officer wants to talk to you all. If only one of you stop and the other keep going down the road one of two things will happen. The first thing is that the Officer tickets the guy who stopped, because he was speeding and of course stopped. The second; is that the Officer likes the law abiding guy who stopped, passes him and goes after the guys that didn't stop and tickets them. But, if you all stop normally that makes the Officer happy and not suspicious or worry so much about Officer Safety (in this case). The best part about you all stopping is that even though he may try to ticket all of you, it wouldn't stand up in court because radar can't differ between a group like that only individual signals. So it would get thrown out of court, because technically one bike could be coming up fast to pass the group or whatever and the radar would pick up on the on signal.
