Problems/Miles (Please be specific): | Low fuel light always on, 600mi.,found loose pin at fuel pump harness. Side stand safety switch As of 13 months, 12,000 mi. no other problems As soon as I wrote this I developed a rear jug rockerbox leak. Fixed it in about 2 hrs. After going through and anti-oxidizing my connectors it wouldn't run quite right. Under hard acceleration it would act like it was missing. I remember reading in American Iron about the most common FI problem being the head temp sensor. I looked at it and realized I must have broken the lead when I pulled the connector apart and it was barely touching. Replaced - problem solved. Rear shock started leaking Spring of '00. Waukon HD/Buell wouldn't replace. Quit in warm weather. Started leaking again over Winter, Waterloo HD/Buell is going to replace. 4/20/01, 12,500mi. new shock and exhaust bracket, no charge. As of 5/02, I am at 22,000mi. and have been very happy with how it is running. Over the winter I replaced the steering and wheel bearings. Only the lower steering bearing was bad. As of 7/31/02 I have 27,200mi., still have 125lbs compression per cyl. with virtually no oil useage.7/03, now up to 32k mi., everything is still fine. In August I rode 3,500mi. to New England and another 800 to the 20th. I'm now at 36+ and she's still running fine. What a bike! At 38,000mi. I decided to do a top-end job on her this Spring. The compression was going down to about 112# and I was getting a little oil weepage from the rear head. The leak turned out to be a crack in the head gasket at one of the studs. pistons looked good so I just replaced the rings and had a valve job done on the heads. Now after trips to Newfoundland and Phoenix the summer of '04 I am at 49,000mi. The stator went out back in June and the amil seal is leaking. Otherwise after two long trips this summer I am still quite happy with her. 8/3/05 Just about to 54,000mi. I worry about noises that I think I hear but she still runs real nice. 9/06 Now at 59,000mi. and still running great. It is due for a paint job this winter but since it sits out in the sun every day I can't complain. |
Other Mods/Misc/Customization.: | Added 35watt foglights to watch for deer. Rewired front turn signals so that they are on all the time so dears in cars see me better |
Favorite Rides (Roads and Routes): | All of them but if I have to choose when we went to Yellowstone (on an '82 Honda CB750) The 2001 Colorado Ridefest is right up there. |
Why I do/don't ride a Buell: | I have liked all the bikes that I ever owned but this is the only one that I look for reasons to go for a ride. |
How can Buell improve their motorcycles?: | Maybe make it a little smoother. |
Life History/Philosophy: | Grew up in Midwest, have visited a lot of places but keep coming back here. Just wish the weather was better in the Winter. Wife, 3 kids. Seventeen year old son races motocross. He wants me to race also but after breaking my collarbone practicing I decided I'm too old for that nonsense. I ride because I love it. I hope I still will when I'm 80. |
Top speed on 2 wheels (mph): | 120 |
Preferred engine oil (brand/grade): | Mobil 1 |
