pipe, airfilter, working on carb.

A friend baught his daughter a 2002 blast with very low milage, he but a after market pipe on, it ran fine, then he but in a begger jet and a needle fuel valve, and a k&n air filter.
Wwell now it wont stay running, backfiring out carb, will barley run, took air cleaner off and the inside of carb looks real sutty (black)
so he but the stock jet and needle back in but the same thing is happing, runs like crap.
anyone have any idea's?
