Hi all, just bought a used Buell from my local dealer. 2004 with less than 2,000 miles on it. It was a riders edge bike, and I took the class this year. I will be using this bike until I am comfortable moving up to my Harley 883 Custom, or I will use the Buell for city driving and use the 883 for nice rides. I am only 4'11 so the Blast will be a perfect bike for me to start on.

Hi!
My name is Jim Jelinski.
I live on the Mississippi gulf coast, near Bay Saint Louis. New to Buells, (bought an '06 Uly, going to pick it up in a couple of weeks), but street riding since 1979. I ran up 100K mi. on a '77 Suzuki GS750 & 40K on a GS850. Longtime recreational dirt rider, also over 20 years owning a Cessna 172 airplane (flying is like riding a motorcycle in 3D). All my toys 'took the plunge' in hurricane Katrina in '05, I'm just now getting back into bikes. Drop me a line! My wife Lydia set up our email address, 'lydiakj@yahoo.com'.
In the area and need a hand? call me at (228)-234-5355.

Hi Everybody

Also been off 2 wheels for far to long....22 years of marriage etc..

Fancied a big traily for the height as I am 6'5". Always been a fan of v twins so the Uly looked to be da buziness. Read so many pages on the internet that it was actually crazy. Common consensus : Will make you grin like an idiot ! Has character, unlike some Bavarian products :-)

Went to local HD dealer in Pretoria as they were closing. Sales guy was very enthusiastic about the Uly....did not even try to push me to a HD. Took it for a ride 2 days later, got off with a sh1?? eating grin on my face.

Took delivery 2 days later on 20 June 2008 of a 2007 Uly with panniers and top box. Have since done 12 000km (7 800 miles) on it, as I use it for my daily 75 mile commute. Saves me at the very least an hour a day..... plus less than half the petrol (avg 20km/l)....that's excluding the fun factor ! Used my car 3 times since purchase, mainly due to it raining, but now use it ALL the time.

Am looking at buying a Madstad shield...any comments would be appreciated.

regards

FigJam

P.S Sorry for taking so long to chat :-)

I am a long time Triumph rider and generally am not a fan of Harley Davidsons, but I have always liked the look of the Buell bikes. My Triumph Daytona 1200 is getting on in years and even though it still runs like a champ a recent dealer incentive has me looking at the Buell Ulysses XT. I am wondering if it would be cheaper to maintain than my Triumph which over the course of 13 years of regular riding has required only its scheduled maintanence and never left me stranded. However that scheduled maintanence can be EXPENSIVE! New chain, sprockets, and tires every 2 years comes to over a grand alone each time! And valve adjustments every year as well as the occasional hose replacement and what have you and it all adds up fast. Not to mention it is a Super Unleaded glutton, getting only about 30mpg in the city. So tell me... how reliable are your BUELLS and how much does it cost to maintain one?

Hello, All

I don't have a Buell, but have become very interested in the Ulysses. I've been riding for about 45 years, have had a lot of different rides including a couple of Triumphs, Norton 850 Commando, early Wing, 750 Four, two BMW's (still have R100/7), a Sportster and FLHTC (put 80k on that one... most reliable and hassle-free ride I've ever had), and a bunch of misc other stuff... currently riding Kaw Concours (OK, lets not get into that for now).

I live in the Northwest Arkansas Ozarks, where there are not only a lot of great paved roads, but many miles of unpaved roads, many of which lead to some nice camping areas, hiking and fishing, etc. Recently I've been thinking about getting a dual-sport, but can't picture myself, at 61, on a "dirt bike! I can, however, see myself on a Ulysses. I went to look at one at the nearest dealer (100 miles) Wednesday, and was impressed with the build quality, fit and finish, etc. It (XB12XT) fit me well and seems to have a lot going for it as an all-around ride. Then the sales guy started it up on the showroom floor, and I started to grin, remembering how much I miss that big V-twin. There are definitely a lot of things I like about the Ulysses, the motor, the belt drive, the bags, the reasonable weight, and minimal amount of maintenance (it takes me 5 hours to adjust the valves on the Concours, and now, at 24k, I'm looking at having to remove the swingarm to grease the front driveshaft splines!)

I do have some concerns and a couple of questions about the Uly...
1 - Premium fuel? An "adventure touring" machine WILL be in places, even in the continental US that don't have premium fuel. It's happened to me with my old airhead BMW on numerous occasions.
2 - What kind of protection is afforded by the relatively small windshield/fairing? I'm not a pup anymore, relief from the wind blast/noise is important.
3 - The front fender appears to be nearly worthless... water/road dirt/sand/gravel etc. will be all over the bike and rider. This was an issue on my Concours (I live a mile down a gravel road) but there was room to fab a fender extension to keep sand/gravel out of the oil cooler.
4 - The wheelbase seems extremely short for open highway stability. I'm sure there's a reason for this... sportbike handling?

Sorry to have rattled on so long, but I'm very interested in this bike. Your thoughts will be much appreciated.

Greg

Figjam, Richard, Greg-

Post your questions into the "Big, Bad, and Dirty" section. It is all Uly riders so you will get more opinions.
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/142838.html?1227533450

Figjam, those with the Madstad brackets seem happy with them, but what turned me off was the fact you have to replace the plastic fly screen with an aluminum one.

Richard, maintenance is all relative. If you get it serviced by the dealer, no matter what it is will be expensive. Here is a rough breakdown of the maintenance schedule:
Oil change every 5k
Primary fluid every 10k
Fork oil every 10k
Air filter every 20k
Give the bike a check over, tighten fasteners, and make sure it’s good to go till next service.

Replace the belt whenever, but sooner rather than later. Having the used belt as a spare can be a life saver.
No valves to adjust, not as many hoses to rot away. Gas mileage is in the 50's for 06-07 models, and in the 40's for 08+. Obviously will vary based on riding yada yada. (Lots of threads about the fuel injection changes in 08) : )

Greg:
1, Use premium if possible. Recently there was a gas shortage in the Georgia/Carolina areas, and was forced to run regular a few times. Some bikes are a bit pickier than others, but it won't kill you if you run regular.
2, There is several windscreens available, and adjustable brackets too. It works pretty good, but it won't be anything like you Connie.
3, Yep the fender is junk for actually blocking stuff, but aftermarket fenders or extensions for the stock one help.
4, The Uly has a 54" wheelbase, which is long for Buell standards. This makes the bike less flickable than the Firebolt, but gives more high speed stability and comfort on long rides. Oh, and it still handles great : )

Hey everyone! Im livin in Union Grove, WI. Finally got a Buell at 32 yrs old. Been drueling over them since they came out. Have a baby on the way, and figured it would be eaasier to get it now than after my son is born. Sooo...I went out and found an 05 firebolt that is in great condition, for a great price. Ive had numerous bikes over the years, and been riding (street bikes) since 16. Yeah, I was the moron at ACHS that rode almost every day in winter because I didnt have a car. Now, I have this nice new Buell........and all I can do (once again) is druel on it until spring. You peeps down south, put a few miles, smiles, and twisties in for me, as Ill be back on the road in March or April (unless we get some radical weather pattern). Bike: 05 XB12R w/7k. mi. Ive already ordered the "rider pegs", frame pucks, and new grips. The bike is totally stock, which is where I like to start. Keep ridin and keep the rubber side down!

Well, Here I am.
48 years old, female. Guess I'm a little unusual...I went for my first EVER motorcycle ride this Spring, on the back of my hubby's Heritage Softail.
Half way around Presque Isle in Erie, PA, I wondered why I had waited so long.
On Friday, he went & got me MY first bike. It's a 2003 Buell Blast.
It's yellow (Kill Bill yellow) and black. Her name is Uma for obvious reasons (the HS is Betty)
I'm excited, a little apprehensive, but looking forward to starting to learn.
People say things like "what, do you want to break bones?" I roll my eyes now & say I don't want to be a scared little rabbit the rest of my life.
So, there's my intro, and one of my favorite things I've read is below.

Hoping to learn some things here, and hi to any of my sister riders out there...

~Paula

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive, well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, worn out, and screaming "WOW, what a ride!

Hey Paula. Welcome to BadWeB and thanks for taking time to share your good news.

We enjoy a very bright and diverse group of lady motorcyclists here and are fortunate to have them. You might even say that they run the place. : ]

I graduated Girard High School (PA) and spent many a Summertime at Chatauqua Lake, one of my favorite places on Earth, mostly for all the great memories of a youth well exploited yet miraculously survived. The CB450 that I for all intents and purposes stole from my father when I turned 16 frequently took me through Ripley, usually when time was short or darkness and deer made riding the hills and curves of rural 430 too demanding. I hope all is well and thriving there in Grape country.

Congratulations on your new Buell Blast and welcome to BadWeB.

Paula:

Welcome . . . if you are "a bit unusual" you'll fit right in here and we can get to working helping you to be REAL unusual.

Congratulations for you and your husband for participating in a sport together that will not only take you wonderful places but will also insure you meet other, albeit unusual people.

We have not only a fascinating contingent of lady Buell riders from around the world ranging from Laura in Italy, Kristi who is one or our moderators to Cathy in Virginia who is also a motorcycle safety instructor. You'll find yourself not only among friends but competent and experienced motorcyclists.

The Blast has a great following and you find, in the Blast area, tons of information and helpful people.

Welcome aboard and I assure you that Blake, our leader, is testimony to just how ill preserved and unattractive some of us are!

Welcome!

Hey folks my name is Mike. Buells rock!! I bought my 99 X1 back in Oct.98 in Edison NJ. Former Central Jersey Brag member, should be a pic of US with Eric in one of the Battletwin mags. I'm going insane because I can't seem to find any of them since I've moved. Buell has sure come a long way since then. I'm pretty sure Court used to come to our BRAG meetings and ride with us on occasion. I don't know IF any of yall are in here, but if so, Hey people. I'm in Florida now, loving it. I just registered and wanted to introduce myself.

Hi Paula, I'm in my mid-50's and have been riding my Buell for the past 2+ yrs. Have been riding just over 10 yrs. It's a great sport and many miles of fun.

Yeah, people always comment on how dangerous this sport is, however, one could get killed walking across the street.

Have fun, be safe, and enjoy that bike. Welcome to badweb.

Hello to All Fellow Buell Lovers!

My name is Tom and I live in south Louisiana. I just bought a leftover 2007 Buell Super TT and absolutely love it. I took my my first real ride on it the other day and after I got done I was laughing my head off! These Buells are so fun to ride. After having grown up on a bevy of metric bikes I can now see the attraction of those big twins and the torque they provide. Happy Holidays!

Happy holidays!

Found BadWeB and read & gleaned from you folks a lot of good information before choosing to buy the mighty XB last July.

I wanted a modern motorcycle.
My '84 BMW twin & Kawasaki I-four were most modern bikes I'd owned or ridden.

Thank-you, forum participants & sponsors.

My XB12R is a modern motorcycle, plus!

Happy Holidays everyone.

I just joined the forum and hope to contribute with a few ride experiences and share in the dialog about owning and riding a Buell.

I purchased my Buell X1 Lightning new in 2000 and have never looked back. The color scheme is Reactor Yellow (fairings) and Nuclear Blue (frame/rims). I haven't seen another X1 w/the same color scheme in at least 5 years, so I'd like to think it's the only one of its kind still left in NorCal.

While it's a 2000, I still only have 25k miles on it, and most of them are from the backroads and open roads around Northern CA. Fluids are changed regularly, and it still runs like a champ.

Cheers!
