Wondering what to do with my RX. I have a 2014 RX. Normally used as a daily driver, driven about 85 miles a day on the SoCal freeways since new. I recently retired and no longer have a need for it. I still own two other Buells, a XB12s, and an 1125CR. I'm going to keep the XB, not sure about the CR. As far as my question, Buells don't seem to be selling too well, at least here in SoCal, so I'm thinking maybe to split it up and sell it for parts. The engine and frame would need to be pick-up only but I could ship most everything else. So I guess, my question is, to the masses...does this sound reasonable or should I try to sell it complete ? I really don't want to mess with tire kickers, just real buyers. What's been your experience's ? Mike |

100% biased opinion here... I know you probably would get more money over time selling it in pieces, and it is your bike, but.... Over the years the numbers of EBRs on the road are going to dwindle due to wear, accidents, mechanical failure, and attrition by squid. Given how few of these were ever made in the first place, it would seem a shame to carve up a perfectly good one to resurrect a bonded title bike. Better to cannibalize the basket cases than to hasten them all into baskets. (Message edited by mnscrounger on April 20, 2018) |

I have a potential buyer for you looking for an RX project bike. How much are you wanting for it? |

Most 2014 RX’s I’ve seen still command $7k or so in So Cal unless they’re beat, salvaged, or super high mileage. Either way it seems like an aweful lot of trouble to take apart, pack, ship, collect $, etc. all while having a bike in pieces Take the small loss and be done with it. Your time is worth something too. |

Mine "might" be considered high mileage by some (34,122.8 as of tonight). I've put over 100,000 on three different Yamaha's (2-FZR1000's and 1-R1), so I really don't consider 34 thousand to be even close to "high". 90% of its miles have been on the freeway, rather than stop and go in town. The left side mid body panel is broken in a couple of places from the kick stand folding up while warming one morning. If fell into the grass, but still broke the panel in a couple of places. It is still on the bike. The right side panel has the built in break at the top frame support under the bars. I have a BUNCH of spare parts - 1. Front and rear sprockets. New ones (frt & rr) are on it now also. 2. Factory windscreen + EBR tall, clear windscreen on it now. 3. EBC-HH frt. brake pads. 4. New factory air filter. 5. Stock ECM, + idspd ECM is currently connected. Don't recall everything (will have to look into my box of goodies !). Current brake pads are fair, tires are fair+. Currently running the stock lower muffler with stainless tips (have the stock upper muffler). Valves checked recently, will need to be adjusted in about 6500 miles. DID chain only has about 1100 miles on it. All I can think of now. Price...anyone interested, make me a reasonable offer. I'm in SoCal. E-mail - ocr one (the digit 1, no spaces) @twc.com Thanks for your comments. Mike |

Parting out a perfectly good bike with a clean title wouldn't really make much sense. If it had a salvage title, and it would be hard to sell whole, then sure. If the bikes had been around much longer and there was a large base of people needing replacement parts, then fine - but there's aren't many people riding these to begin with, and most will not have enough miles on them yet to actually need replacement parts. Add to that fact that most parts can be bought pretty cheaply through the manufacturer directly... I would just sell as a whole. With the mileage, you probably won't get more than $5500-$6000, but I don't see you getting that much for your parts if you pieced them all out and waited for everything to sell - not even counting your time to take apart, list, reply with buyers, take every piece to get shipped, etc. |

EBR's (and XB's) are weird that way. 34k really isn't high mileage, but it's very high for an EBR. An EBR buyer can find one with MUCH less on it pretty easily so you need to make yours attractive in some way. Rare parts, low price, something... Honestly, I wouldn't be interested unless it was sub-$5k because theres always a garage queen out there for not much more. Either keep riding it until she's all worn out, or sell it fairly and move on. I don't see you making any more than that with the parts, and that's a huge PITA } |

What makes 34K a lot of miles for an EBR engine ? Other than just more miles than most RX's may have. Is there something wimpy about that engine ? The gas and oil mileage are good. No oil deposits on the spark plugs. I run a fuel system cleaner thru it every oil change for a week, so the valves-chambers-ports, etc. are nice and clean. In any case, thanks all. Mike |

Mike, Your question cannot be answered because it is a perception. Generally sport bikes are not ridden much in comparison with non-sport bikes, so 34K is much. Lastly, rebuilding in a conventional sense is not possible because of the absence of oversize bearing shells and pistons. They were never made.......ever, not even for the 1125s either. I didn't mean it was a lot for the engine, I'm sure it's fine. I meant it was a lot for the potential sale, because there are so many around that people don't ride I wouldn't worry about getting far enough into an engine re-build to have to turn the crank or bore the cylinders. It ain't a 350 Chevy. Just get new ones and put them in, or buy a motor off eBay they go fairly cheap. |
