A crazy thought, since the outcome of the receivership is yet a ongoing item. The big "IF" major parts are NLA like the main drive sprocket which after removing it from my SX is crazy special. Again crazy thought, is it possible to switch the drive system back to belt drive like the 1125 R and CR. I understand the concept of better transfer of power etc. etc. of the chain, but I never have had any problem with either of the belt drives on either of my R or CR. I've ridden the SX has hard as I have R/CR, and kept it lubricated with Amsoil Chain lube, but I've got >4K miles on it and must replace the rear sprocket already. Again, just thinkin' out load! I'm thinkin that the belt drive hardware is still readily available (getting less so) but parts seem for EBR 1190's, to be drying up fast. Just saying. I remember a thread about a couple guys here coming up with CAD drawings of replaceable stuff, perhaps they have something going for the front sprocket, etc..????

I've been plotting to do the same. The stock swingarm even has a slot in it for installing the belt. I assume the stock 1125 front sprocket would bolt right on, but I never bothered to look and see if things like the 1125R rear pulley would work, have sufficient clearance, deal with the tensioner, etc.

Front pulley will bolt on, as will the belt tensioner, but the rear pulley will not. It would require a custom pulley made, though some, Marc (Purpony) in particular, have good experience in this regard. He has made several XB pulleys and had them hard coated. Not cheap, but not bad. Would save a lot of maintenance IMO.

Mike, who did you order the front sprocket from, can you buy just the sprocket portion or do you have to buy the whole counter balance "kit"? How much $ are we talking about? The part number I have for just the sprocket (which is more than just a sprocket!!) P/N G1443.1B6.

Phelan I wonder if the 1125 R/CR rear rims / pulley will work on the EBR swing arm, swing arms look the same and they are still available on line ebay etc..

If doing that, you would need the 1125 Swingarm, wheel, rotor, pulley, and axle. My post earlier was under the impression you would want to keep the EBR hubless rear wheel and the axle adjusters.

The location of the idler is different from the chain and belt setups.
(at least it is on the 1125, so I'm assuming that it is for the 1190)
The rearset brackets are different.

I fell this could be a major issue.




BTW, if you want longer life from the rear chain sprocket buy a steel in place of the aluminum.

If you did this, I think you will have a tire clearance issue as well with a 6" rim that the 1190 uses. The 1125 is a 5.5" rim. The easiest solution is to go with the 1125 complete rear wheel assembly including the swing arm and axle.

I guess the other thought would be the gearing difference for the traction control, and whether that stuff will fit the swing arm, and wheel assembly from the 1125... I can already tell I am not going to like the chain set up for the street.

There is justification for both the belt drive and chain drive. The 1125 belt drive is superior to the chain for high mileage, street use like commuting and sport touring, no question. Chain drive is superior for total performance. However, the 1125 has terrible low speed characteristics, so without several other mods, the belt drive alone is not sufficient to make it a good commuter or sport tourer.

Hmm...really? My 09 CR must not have that feature, because it's rock-solid from idle to rev limiter, mountain roads to commuter traffic.

I'd like to correct myself in that last post. My last sentence is true, but it doesn't belong in the EBR forum. I have no idea how well the 1190 is for low speed commuting, I have not ridden one.

The 1190 has a couple of things going for it at low speeds.

It doesn't overheat itself.
You have to slip the clutch a ton but there is plenty of feel.
Stick to speeds within 20mph of posted and you get pretty decent mpg.
It's narrow enough to lane split easily but the combo of steep rake,and wide bars make it pretty agile agile at even a walking pace.

As for the belt it depends on where and how you ride. The belt is not suited for high power, dynamic riding. Slow and steady sure but the 1190 will goad you into riding it hard.

They may not need as much care but when belts go they really go. I'll take my chances with a chain.

I have never broken a belt. I have changed them, but because of stone punctures. I have been using belts on my Harley since '93 without issues and for many, many miles. HD belts are quite a bit larger though than the ones used on the Buells. I am curious if others have actually broken a belt. The only failures I am aware of are due to stone punctures.

I have however, consumed lots of chains due to link failure and on my hot rod 1137cc Kawasaki, I had to change chains every 1000 kms due to link pins bending and I was using 3/4" 530 chains. That's not to mention the mess they make when you keep them clean and lubed.

Chains:::::::::Belts

Tastes Great::::::::Less Filling


I've broken a number of belts, over the years. I even stripped most of the teeth off one of the belts on my S3-T. (that happened while running 70 MPH on the Pennsylvania Turnpike).

Nevertheless, I prefer belts to chains. If EBR were to come out with an SX variant that had hard bags (preferably Hepco & Becker Juniors) and belt drive, I'd go in hock to buy one.
