Do you know how long he had to "hold that pose" for me before I shot it? Almost got a ski pole spanking. |

And its not yellow! Sent the pic home to Shel and had her open up the email while I was on the phone with her, you should have heard her laugh, she was in tears. She did remind me tho that you do have a copy of Photoshop and that I ought to be careful. |

as long as it doesn't have to be YELLOW!!! Have to agree with that one.Ferris,James was looking over my shoulder the other day and saw a pic of your V-Strom.He questioned your sanity and manhood, and not very politely---LOL."Dad,didn't he used to ride Buells? And he bought THAT??"I had to agree that you had gone a bit off track--- BTW,looks like you may need that snowmobile after this next storm hits. |

there's never been any doubt about the integrity of my sanity: guilty as charged. my manhood? i do ok. if young James is referring to the 'Strom's looks, agreed, it's about as homely as they come, 'specially in hi-vis yellow. (saw a new '05 the other day, ALL dressed in black ((including frame and swingarm)) looked pretty sharp!) funny thing about the V-Strom, tho, is that from the cockpit it looks much more attractive, and makes a three-week jaunt around the country a thing to rejoice. sure hope Erik has got an East Troy version of this bike (stompin' V-twin ((liquid-cooled would be nice)), comfy ergos, room to stretch, lots of fuel capacity, decent sport-touring fairing, maybe some real Givi-quality hard luggage?) in the works. hmmm, perhaps we'll get a peak at just such a machine next month during Daytona. |

"comfy ergos, room to stretch, lots of fuel capacity" ditto that, but it won't be seen at Daytona. nothing definite known. I'm just hoping to find something not considered a "sport bike" by the insurance industry that fits those parameters you mentioned. |

Mike, insurance considerations aside, what do you see in the marketplace right now that interests you in the way of a sport-touring (or touring-sport) bike, and why? |

If I can play ... since the VFR got factory hard bags, it's been tempting. Proven platform, it's a V motor, decent power, and supposedly handling on the "Sport" side of Sport Touring. A few modifications makes it a very road worthy Long Distance Sport Tourer. I know of a very nice one for sale in Indiana ... if only I had the dough (and a few less bikes in the garage ). Of course, if Honda would stick the latest version of the RC51 motor in a VFR/Sport Touring style bike ... hmmmm Henrik (Really would like Buell to come out with the penultimate Sport Tourer - we've already given them the wish list for features ) (Message edited by Henrik on January 06, 2005) |

Some of the BMW's, some of the Triumphs, one or two of the Harleys (though not SportTrouring), a Ducati of sorts, maybe a Yamaha FJ, Suzuki has one or two, Honda? maybe, but nothing to make me say "I gotta have it". There is no "why", just a mental and emotional and physical feel of what will work and what won't work for me personally, at least as far as new bikes go. Take the specific parameter of "SportTouring" out of the equation and I just want a basic road bike, suitable for commuting, short rides, cross country rides, two-up rides, spirited rides, boring freeway rides, fast rides, slow rides, general meanders and wanderings. The M2 is pretty close apart from the adjustability ease of the rear/under shock. The S2 would be close but with the same shock issue and my personal lack of acquiring a passenger "don't feel like falling off the back" passenger back rest/support/slideoffstopper. Not real fussy about what I end up with, but it must fit my personal needs within an acceptable range of tolerance. I think I'm off topic. |

topic creep is honorable and fun! me, the Honda's new motor feels fussy and underpowered -- the Stromtroopers are looking pretty good, and if Guzzi would stablize a little, they'd look good too the Sport Touring market seems to have polarized -- touring bias on one side (YamFJ, frinstance), sport on the other (Dukes) but the middle ground seems vacant to me |

Henrik, agree on all counts on the VFR. mine, at 65K, was as tight and refined as when it was new. it is THIS bike, out of all that i've owned, that made me understand how overall good a motorcycle can be. btw, the one for sale in Indiana? i can vouch for both the bike AND the owner. RC-VFR? makes me all trembly-kneed just thinking about it. ditto the penultimate Buell Sport Tourer comment, and i, for one, think it's not a matter of IF, just a matter of WHEN. (like maybe next month in Daytona...) Mike, 'tis ok if you're "off topic" if the person who started the topic says it's ok. i like the FJR1300 (especially for the price); mayyyybe it's a little too close to "tour" for me, on the other hand the folks that own 'em love them equally for their "haulzass" quotient. was pretty impressed with Racerboy's ST1300 on our way across the country in September. it's anything but a slouch on a twisty road...and the bike's pretty quick, too. love Beemers, just have never been able to afford one. Triumph would do if i was in the market for pure sport. the triple is a screamer/torquer of a motor, but not my first choice for ripping from CA to NC and back. Ducs? when i'm rich and can afford an entire fleet of bikes, perhaps. the ST's are close to what i want, but again the $$ is an issue. the 'Strom needs better wind protection - for as bulbous as the fairing is, it does a sub-standard job of providing a place to hide. and the overall build quality is grade-school stuff compared to any late model Honda. still, LOVE that v-twin torque, and it's rangy long-leggedness. it is SO comfortable from an ergo standpoint, makes my ex-VFR seemed cramped in comparison. holds nearly six gals of fuel, you sit up nice and tall with LOTS of room to move around, and i expect that with regular oil and filter changes 100,000 miles would come and go with not even a thermostat gasket leak to note in the log book. there have been many discussions here on BADWEB re: pros and cons of a world-class sport-touring Buell, and the impression seems to be that the people actually tasked with potentially designing and manufacturing such a machine don't think it's financially feasible in terms of ROI. i'd sure love to see 'em proven wrong. |

Bomber, good to see your name here sir! having recently spent several days on the road in close proximity to an ST1300, the thing sure didn't seem underpowered. in roll-ons, for example, such as an agressive "get it up to speed" blend into I-40 traffic, i had little to offer Racerboy except for a hearty, "Hey! Wait for ME!!!" never got to ride it, tho, but suspect it's pretty close to the same feeling as spending all day having great sex. i think one of the 'Strom's biggest virtues is its price point. they'd never sell if they were anywhere near the $10k mark, but you can pick up new '03's for nearly nothing (ask me how i know...) as mentioned it's not up to Honda build quality, but three or four large in terms of purchase price has a way of making this criticism seem a little less interesting. |

FB ... you never cease to make me jealous That pic of Denise with her textbook demonstration of "shivering uncontrollably" reminds me of Splash99 when we took over the woodstove from that family eating pancakes near the ape caves, that was insane. Thanks for the great pics and story line, keeps me dreaming for spring time. The best I can offer is this view from my living room window taken a few days ago. It's cold (20ish) and snowing again. Thanks again for the vicarious winter ride, keep up the good work. |

"guest house for Ferris", eh? beat's the dog house, i'spose. good to hear from you Spudman, hope you and Trixie and crew are diggin' your new digs. my fave recent photo of yours is the one of Bullwinkle cruising thru your back yard! wish i had pix from when we commandeered the warming shelter from that wide-eyed family on St. Helens - sure was decent of them (once they got over the initial shock, that is) to take us in like that. i imagine they STILL talk about the day that three dozen Buells appeared en masse outta the swirling blizzard. "Step away from the campfire and nobody gets hurt!!!" looking forward to the next bike ride AND boat ride, my friend. get on down here sometime and we'll show you around. |

Henrik - said VFR is undergoing detail for sale. New ST1300 will be here in March and the viffer will be the down payment. Hint, hint, hint. Ferris - would love to post pictures of our area but I cain't figger out how to size digital pics. Suffice to say we had 2" of freezing rain Wednesday night and many, including Hartford City, have been without power since then. We got our power back a day ago but we were able to run the ranch with a backup generator in the downtime... for the birds of course. Today we were greeted with 4" of white stuff on top of the two inches of ice that still hasn't melted. This place(8 county area, level 3 emergency) looks like a war zone with all the downed trees, canopies and powerlines. It was absolutely beautiful this morning so I ventured out and shot three rolls of 35mm film that I'll get processed onto a Kodak disc... maybe I can manipulate them into the proper size file for posting under the "Hometown" page. We "may" get to go back to work on Monday. TWC is reporting that you folks are getting hammered. Is that so? (Message edited by jb2 on January 08, 2005) |
