Kilroy, you are partially right, that if you just "eat right", you can get plenty of protein to maintain your body's necessary functions, as well as cut weight. But if you try to just "eat right" to gain significant muscle mass in a short period of time, you will find it nearly impossible to build the size, strength, and density without loading up on excessive fat, sugars, and salts that are counterproductive and unhealthy. I absolutely agree that proper diet is of #1 importance, but I think supplementation is #2, and specific to your desired outcome. Proper exercise would be the co#2 lol. |

Phelan, I thank you for your partial agreement with me. See my picture. This was taken about 3 or 4 years ago, when I was 41 or 42. I am now 45 and look exactly the same. I was training for my first bodybuilding show, which explains the outfit (or lack thereof). This is with no drugs, no supplements, no protein powder, or any of it. You don't need that stuff if you know what you are doing. I speak from 28 years of experience with this. My wife is a national level competitor. I know what I am talking about, and am just trying to impart some sane, real world advice to those on this thread that are undertaking a valiant challenge, and are bombarded by all sorts of things designed to do nothing but separate you from your money. You are looking good by the way - keep it up and I hope you get where you want to be. Kilroy

Thanks Kilroy. Obviously for you diet alone works well lol. You look great. What's your weight, if you don't mind me asking? Not knowing your height, you look about 190.. I'll amend what I said; diet alone and proper excersise CAN get you the results you're looking for. However, my goals are a little different from the ones posted in here so far as I'm trying to put on significant lean mass in a short period of time, as well as get more cut. It's a process for me, and as I find better quality foods, I can make good use of them in my diet. In the meantime, however, I build my diet the best I can and supplement it to accommodate the #s difference. As with anything, YMMV, but it's working well for me. |

Phelan I was about 175 at the time, but that's not important. I don't post on this subject very much, but it seems like every time i have, you have been right there to contradict my advice. The picture was just to lend a little bit of credibility to what I say. I've walked the walk for a long time, and I do know a little more about this than you. But advice is free I guess and you get what you pay for. Kilroy |

All right! What is up with the sweaty fat guy with the wrinkly skin wearing a bikini bottom? Cheeeece.....this is one thread that I hoped we could avoid pictures in! My belly looks kind of like that if I lay on the couch cushions wrong while taking my nap! |

OK, 2 years since the Nutrisystem diet and my weight has crept back up to 239 lbs (as of Monday am weigh in). I've been hitting the eliptical trainer every day this week. Will weigh in next Monday again. Can't afford to go back on Nutrisystem food at this time, so I'm going to try and police my own portions (with wifey's help). So....count me back in! |

Tom, my apologies. You definitely know what you're talking about. I am in no way trying to downplay that. You definitely have better advice, especially here, where everyone's goal is to lose weight. It's my fault for coming in here and confusing the subject. I lost the weight i was trying to lose, and now I'm trying to gain lean mass. The diet and workout that I do may not be perfect for my needs, but it's constantly changing as I find ways to get closer to it, and I am open to advice on how to put on lean mass. I am about 5'9" and I'm looking to gain serious muscle- to the tune of 200-220 lbs in the end, with a similar fat% of yours, but staying lean the whole way. I may be naive thinking I can even do that, but that's my goal. (Message edited by Phelan on August 13, 2010) |

Well I may have overreacted. Its just that I have spent too much time arguing with people over the years that know more than me, that have advice for me that I don't want, that have found the magic shortcuts, the greatest diet ever, the silver bullet, etc, and it is a pet peeve of mine and I tend to have a short fuse about it. Nothing beats, or replaces, tons of hard work, knowledge and good nutrition. You will find what works if you stick to it long enough, and I hope you reach your goals. Nothing is more satisfying than that. Now I will get off this thread so it can go back to what it is really about. Good luck Kilroy |

09/03/10 - 165#. Same here, I'm not that worried about the overall weight right now, just getting cut, burning fat, and building muscle, strength, and endurance. 165 is a far cry from the 192 I was at in March though.. |

Cool beans. A good notion I found in my studies is 2-4 reps of 85-90% of your max will tear muscle to have it rebuild stronger, but not much size difference. 6-10 reps of 75-80% of your max will build hypertrophy (muscle cell size and water retention). Hypertrophy builds reps (stamina), vascularity, and size, but not strength. (Message edited by Phelan on September 04, 2010) |

I've been trying to get in better shape since this past March. I lost about 10-12 lbs in teh first 3 weeks or so and mostly stayed there, but I've noticed a big improvement in my stamina, a slightly flatter stomach, and slightly bigger and more defined arms, shoulders and chest. I have pretty chronic back, hip and knee pain, so my cardio has to be low impact - I prefer the bike, and do about 25 minutes plus 5 minutes cool down, keeping my rpms around 95 and my heart rate averaging in the 165-170 range, with a short trip to the low 180s once in a while. After that, it's stretching and ab work, then strength training. I've just started using the roman chair for my lower back, hoping to improve my back issues, and also have been doing a lot more free weights instead of the machines. The free weights work more of those stabilizing muscles, and because it's so easy to switch from one thing to another, I can keep my heart rate up better as well. I don't really have a weight goal, I just want to get rid of the flab on my stomach and try to tone up and build up a little everywhere. |
