My Wife and I rode the Ulysses from Knoxville, on the 129-Dragon and then into Cherokee, NC to visit the Cherokee Museum. We continued on thru the Smoky Mountain NP and met her relatives in Gatlinburg, TN. We then took the TN 321 hwy. into Boone, NC and onto the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Finally we jumped on Skyline Dr. in the Shenandoah Valley on our way home to Delaware. The Uly did great considering all the extra weight of a pillon and having the bags packed for a week on the road. I noticed that the front end would get real twitchy when almost on reserve, so I stopped often to keep her full. We kept up with a group of three BMW GS riders (all solo and kitted up) which did not make them too happy on the Pkwy!      | ||

The Cherokee Museum was very informative. Great dioramas, Some nice examples of British armaments, native costumes, and implements used in daily life. We learned that the Cherokee hung gourds hollowed out to attract purple martins for "vector control" just as we do now, except our gourds are plastic! The explanations about the ceremonial mounds, that resemble the Mayan ruins in Central America, are fascinating. Finally, seeing the British and American expansion into the Appalachian and Great Lakes areas from the viewpoint of the Native Americans, is something you can't get elsewhere. | ||
